Induction of Salt Tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana by Volatiles From Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB42 via the Jasmonic Acid Signaling Pathway.

Previously, we showed that Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB42 can confer salt tolerance in plants by root inoculation under salt stress condition, and the FZB42 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) promoted plant growth and development under non-salt stress condition. In the present study, we investigated the mechanism that allows FZB42 VOCs to confer salt tolerance in Arabidopsis without colonization of plant roots. We found that FZB42 VOCs significantly increased the biomass of Arabidopsis and also maintained the leaf chlorophyll content under salt stress condition. Physiological tests showed tha

Synergistic effects of phytohormones and membrane transporters in plant salt stress mitigation.

Plants are frequently exposed to high salinity, negatively affecting their development and productivity. This review examined the complex roles of membrane transporters (MTs) and phytohormones in mediating salt stress. MTs are crucial in capturing sodium ions (Na+) and maintaining a delicate balance between sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+), essential for supporting cellular homeostasis and enhancing overall plant health. These MTs were instrumental in regulating ion balance and promoting the absorption and segregation of vital nutrients, thereby enhancing salt stress tolerance. Various plant ho

Genome-Wide Identification of CRK Family Members in Solanaceae Crops and Functional Characterization of CaCRK10 and SmCRK6 in Salt Stress Response.

Salt stress severely limits crop growth and productivity, particularly in horticultural crops. Cysteine-rich receptor-like kinases (CRKs) are important membrane-associated signaling proteins involved in plant environmental responses; however, their functions in salt stress adaptation in Solanaceae crops remain limited. In this study, a genome-wide identification and comparative analysis of the CRK gene family was performed in pepper (Capsicum annuum), eggplant (Solanum melongena), and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). 37 CRK genes were identified in pepper. Comprehensive analyses, including phylo

Over-expression of a NAC 67 transcription factor from finger millet (Eleusine coracana L.) confers tolerance against salinity and drought stress in rice.

BACKGROUND: NAC proteins (NAM (No apical meristem), ATAF (Arabidopsis transcription activation factor) and CUC (cup-shaped cotyledon)) are plant-specific transcription factors reported to be involved in regulating growth, development and stress responses. Salinity responsive transcriptome profiling in a set of contrasting finger millet genotypes through RNA-sequencing resulted in the identification of a NAC homolog (EcNAC 67) exhibiting differential salinity responsive expression pattern. METHODS: Full length cDNA of EcNAC67 was isolated, characterized and validated for its role in abiotic st

Bacillus strains exhibit various plant growth promoting traits and their biofilm-forming capability correlates to their salt stress alleviation effect on maize seedlings.

Soil salinity interferes with plant growth and development. Bacillus genus has been used to increase the growth and productivity of a wide variety of crops by alleviating the effects of salt stress. A total of thirty two Bacillus isolates were obtained from maize rhizosphere, and their plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits and biocontrol activities were tested. Bacillus isolates displayed varying degrees of PGP properties-the production of extracellular enzymes, indole acetic acid, hydrogen cyanide, phosphate solubilization, biofilm formation, and antifungal potential against several fungal path

Role of nitrate reductase, nitric oxide, and S-nitrosylation in salinity stress in plants: A review.

Salt stress is a critical environmental factor that restricts plant growth and agricultural production. Nitrate Reductase (NR) is a core enzyme in plant nitrogen metabolism. Interestingly, studies have shown that the expression and activity of NR are tissue-specific, which may provide new targets for improving the salt tolerance of crops through genetic engineering. It influences plant salt tolerance through the regulation of nitrogen metabolism, osmotic regulation, and antioxidant defense. This review synthesizes emerging insights into how NR orchestrates plant salt tolerance through three in

S-nitrosylation of PTP1 positively regulates MPK6 activity in response to salt or cold stress in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Nitric oxide (NO), an essential signaling molecule, greatly affects how plants respond to salinity or cold stress. It can impact specific protein activity via S-nitrosylation. We found that protein tyrosine phosphatase 1 (PTP1) participates in the response of Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana) to both high-salt and freezing conditions. NO facilitated PTP1 S-nitrosylation at cysteine (Cys)-41, resulting in increased salt tolerance and altered sensitivity to freezing. Additionally, this process reduced the dephosphorylation activity of PTP1 and activated mitogen-activated protein kinase 6 (MPK6)

RNA-sequencing transcriptome analysis of Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh. leaf epidermis defines tissue-specific transcriptional response to salinity treatment.

Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh. is a typical mangrove plant. Its epidermis contains salt glands, which can secrete excess salts onto the leaf surfaces, improving the salt tolerance of the plants. However, knowledge on the epidermis-specific transcriptional responses of A. marina to salinity treatment is lacking. Thus, physiological and transcriptomic techniques were applied to unravel the salt tolerance mechanism of A. marina. Our results showed that 400 mM NaCl significantly reduced the plant height, leaf area, leaf biomass and photosynthesis of A. marina. In addition, 1565 differentially ex

Responses, Physiological and Molecular Mechanisms, and Mitigation Strategies of Grapevine Under Salt Stress.

Soil salinization has become a major global abiotic threat restricting sustainable viticulture, especially in coastal and inland saline-alkali zones. Unlike cereal crops mainly suffering from sodium toxicity, grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is a typical chloride-sensitive woody perennial, subjected to superimposed damages of osmotic stress, ionic imbalance and secondary oxidative injury under saline conditions which severely suppress vegetative growth and degrade berry quality. This review systematically summarizes the multi-layered physiological adaptive mechanisms of grapevine against salt str

Soybean Inositol Polyphosphate 5-Phosphatase 8 Confers Salt Tolerance by Reducing Sodium Influx Through Inositol 1,4,5-Trisphosphate Signalling.

Evidence suggests that the metabolism of inositol and its derivatives may be involved in various biological processes including salt tolerance, but there has been limited understanding. Ectopic expression of Gs5PTase8, an inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatase cloned from wild soybean (Glycine soja), significantly enhanced salt tolerance in cultivated soybean (Glycine max). In this follow up study, the overexpression of Gs5PTase8 was shown to improve salt tolerance in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana, soybean hairy roots and composite plants, by preventing sodium (Na+) accumulation and maintainin

TIME FOR COFFEE coordinates phase separation and chromatin regulation for salt tolerance.

The circadian clock enhances plant fitness by aligning internal timing with the external photoperiod, but how it coordinates spatiotemporal regulation with chromatin dynamics to improve salt tolerance is not well understood. Here, we show that the clock component TIME FOR COFFEE (TIC) forms biomolecular condensates in response to salt stress, but not to osmotic stress alone. Consistently, tic mutants were hypersensitive to salt stress yet displayed enhanced salt tolerance under 21-hour light-dark cycles matching their shortened circadian period, highlighting the importance of circadian clock i

Cloning and functional characterization of OsERFSR1, a negative regulator of salt stress tolerance in rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Salt stress is one of the major abiotic factors limiting rice growth, development and yield. In this study, a member of the AP2/ERF transcription factor family, OsERFSR1, was cloned from rice. Overexpression of OsERFSR1 (OE) significantly reduced salt tolerance, with survival rates of 53.2% compared with 70.2% in wild-type (WT) plants, whereas CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout (ko) markedly enhanced salt tolerance, with survival rates of 54.6% compared with 28.2% in WT, suggesting that OsERFSR1 acts as a negative regulator of salt stress tolerance. Physiological analyses revealed that, under salt

Sortin2: a chemical compound to enhance tolerance against salinity stress in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Due to climate change, drought-prone areas have increased, and soil salinity is progressively increasing, leading to a greater number of regions with highly saline soils. Salt stress represents one of the most detrimental factors in modern agriculture, prompting the scientific community to seek effective solutions. Among the proposed alternatives, the use of bioactive chemical compounds to enhance plant tolerance and counteract saline stress has emerged as a promising approach. Since salt stress tolerance could be conferred by increasing the endocytic trafficking, the use of the synthetic comp

Two bHLH transcription factors regulate PbGME1 expression to modulate ascorbate biosynthesis and salt tolerance in pear.

Salt stress severely limits plant growth and productivity. GDP-mannose-3',5'-epimerase (GME), a key enzyme in ascorbic acid (AsA) biosynthesis, has been implicated in plant stress responses, but its role in pear salt tolerance remains unclear. Here, we identified PbGME1 as a positive regulator of salt tolerance in pear. The basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor PbbHLH67 directly binds to the PbGME1 promoter and activates its transcription, as shown by yeast one-hybrid, electrophoretic mobility shift, and dual-luciferase assays. Overexpression of PbbHLH67 enhanced salt tolerance in pear s
