Modeling the impact of sanitation and awareness on the spread of infectious diseases.

Sanitation and awareness programs play a fundamental role and are much effective public health interventions to control the spread of infectious diseases. In this paper, a nonlinear mathematical model for the control of infectious diseases, such as typhoid fever is proposed and analyzed by considering budget required for sanitation and awareness programs as a dynamic variable. It is assumed that the budget allocation regarding the protection against the disease to warn people and for sanitation increases logistically and its per-capita growth rate increases with the increase in number of infec

The roles of water, sanitation and hygiene in reducing schistosomiasis: a review.

Schistosomiasis is a disease caused by infection with blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma. Transmission of, and exposure to, the parasite result from faecal or urinary contamination of freshwater containing intermediate host snails, and dermal contact with the same water. The World Health Assembly resolution 65.21 from May 2012 urges member states to eliminate schistosomiasis through preventive chemotherapy (i.e. periodic large-scale administration of the antischistosomal drug praziquantel to school-aged children and other high-risk groups), provision of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH)

The role of sanitation in malnutrition--a science and policy controversy in India.

Over the past decade, India's economic growth has been remarkable - yet almost half of India's children under 5 remain stunted. The National Food Security Bill is the country's response to this critical situation. Studies reveal that Indian children are chronically undernourished, not only because of lack of food but also because of recurring gastrointestinal infections. The stunting problem revolves more around lack of sanitation than food insecurity. Despite acknowledging that malnutrition is 'complex and multidimensional', government action has consisted largely of nutritional interventions

Field survey of a sustainable sanitation system in a residential house.

Sustainable sanitation is an approach for more ecological and sustainable water resources management. In this paper, we proposed one of the new integrated waste treatment systems: an "sustainable sanitation system" that includes separation of the black water from water system by a non-flushing toilet (bio-toilet), and a gray water treatment based on a biological and ecological concept. Sustainable sanitation system also converts the domestic waste to soil conditioners and fertilizers, for farmland use. As one of the case studies, Environmentally Symbiotic Housing in which people actually live

Enhancing sanitation efficiency in red meat processing: a novel enzymatic approach.

Residual organic matter on food contact surfaces (FCS) in meat processing plants promotes bacterial attachment and persistence, compromising meat safety and quality. Conventional hot-water cleaning (55-60 °C) can exacerbate this problem by heat-setting proteinaceous residues, leading to the formation of conditioning films that protect microorganisms from subsequent sanitation. A low-temperature, enzyme-based cleaning strategy was specifically designed to disrupt meat-derived residues before thermal fixation occurs, representing a departure from conventional heat-dependent cleaning regimes. A t

City sanitation and socioeconomics predict rat zoonotic infection across diverse neighbourhoods.

Rat-associated zoonoses transmitted through faeces or urine are of particular concern for public health because environmental exposure in homes and businesses may be frequent and undetected. To identify times and locations with greater public health risks from rats, we investigated whether rat characteristics, environmental features, socioeconomic factors, or season could predict rat infection risk across diverse urban neighbourhoods. In partnership with a pest management company, we sampled rats in 13 community areas along an income gradient in Chicago, a large city where concern about rats h

Broad approaches to cholera control in Asia: Water, sanitation and handwashing.

Cholera has been eliminated as a public health problem in high-income countries that have implemented sanitation system separating the community's fecal waste from their drinking water and food supply. These expensive, highly-engineered systems, first developed in London over 150 years ago, have not reached low-income high-risk communities across Asia. Barriers to their implementation in communities at highest risk for cholera include the high capital and operating costs for this technological approach, limited capacity and perverse incentives of local governments, and a decreasing availabilit

Women's role in sanitation decision making in rural coastal Odisha, India.

BACKGROUND: While women and girls face special risks from lack of access to sanitation facilities, their ability to participate and influence household-level sanitation is not well understood. This paper examines the association between women's decision-making autonomy and latrine construction in rural areas of Odisha, India. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-method study among rural households in Puri district. This included a cross sectional survey among 475 randomly selected households. These were classified as either having a functional latrine, a non-functional latrine or no latrine at all.

Chloroxyanion Residues in Cantaloupe and Tomatoes after Chlorine Dioxide Gas Sanitation.

Chlorine dioxide gas is effective at cleansing fruits and vegetables of bacterial pathogens and(or) rot organisms, but little data are available on chemical residues remaining subsequent to chlorine gas treatment. Therefore, studies were conducted to quantify chlorate and perchlorate residues after tomato and cantaloupe treatment with chlorine dioxide gas. Treatments delivered 50 mg of chlorine dioxide gas per kg of tomato (2-h treatment) and 100 mg of gas per kg of cantaloupe (6-h treatment) in sealed, darkened containers. Chlorate residues in tomato and cantaloupe edible flesh homogenates we

Modelling cholera epidemics: the role of waterways, human mobility and sanitation.

We investigate the role of human mobility as a driver for long-range spreading of cholera infections, which primarily propagate through hydrologically controlled ecological corridors. Our aim is to build a spatially explicit model of a disease epidemic, which is relevant to both social and scientific issues. We present a two-layer network model that accounts for the interplay between epidemiological dynamics, hydrological transport and long-distance dissemination of the pathogen Vibrio cholerae owing to host movement, described here by means of a gravity-model approach. We test our model again

Health study of New York City Department of Sanitation landfill employees.

Employees currently working at a large municipal landfill expressed concern that they experience higher rates of illness than other municipal sanitation workers. Therefore, this study was designed to examine acute health effects among employees working at the New York City Department of Sanitation, with special emphasis upon the landfill workers. Interviews conducted with 238 landfill and 262 off-site male employees asked questions about health symptoms experienced in the six months prior to the interview and about workplace exposures. This study found a higher prevalence among landfill employ

Container-based sanitation in Nairobi's Mukuru: roles, power, challenges and strategies.

Rapid urbanization in the developing world has exacerbated the crisis of poor sanitation within sprawling informal settlements. Container-Based Sanitation (CBS) has emerged as a promising, alternative solution designed to fill these critical infrastructural deficits where conventional sewage systems are absent. Despite its apparent potential, there is a recognized gap in the contextual understanding of CBS implementation, particularly concerning the influence of local social and political dynamics, which ultimately hinders effective scale and sustainable programming. This qualitative study aim

Socio-ecological barriers to women's empowerment in sanitation in Eastern Indonesia.

Low-income and marginalised groups in any setting are affected by inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sanitation access, particularly women and girls who are disproportionately affected mainly because of gender inequality. This paper discusses barriers to women's access to and participation in sanitation programs based on the case study in Central Lombok and West Manggarai, Eastern Indonesia. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted on 28 informants and 6 groups, respectively, and analysed using thematic analysis. The study found that women and girls in Easter

Changing Water-Sanitation Determinants of Cholera over Two Decades in Bangladesh.

Cholera is a leading global public health threat, especially in developing countries. This study aimed to determine the changing determinants of cholera related to water-sanitation practices between 1994-1998 and 2014-2018 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Data of all cause diarrhea cases were extracted from the Diarrheal Disease Surveillance System of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, Dhaka, and analysis was performed among three groups: Vibrio cholerae detected as sole pathogen, V. cholerae detected as mixed infection, and detection of no common enteropathogen in stoo
