Bovine eosinophilic myositis (BEM) is a subclinical myopathy characterized by multifocal white to grey-green discolorations in skeletal muscles, heart, tongue and oesophagus. These lesions are found at slaughter or during meat cutting and result in considerable economic losses. The etiology and pathogenesis are unclear, although it has been suggested, that Sarcocystis species are involved. To elucidate their role, two calves were repeatedly injected intramuscularly with adjuvanted Sarcocystis antigen. The morphological changes at the injection sites in these calves were histologically and immu

An alpaca (Llama pacos), born and raised in Australia, was presented with multiple subcutaneous abscesses. Histological findings indicated a severe necrotizing and histiocytic myositis and cellulitis associated with central caseation and multiple sarcocysts. Ultrastructural examination supported the diagnosis; however, cyst wall characteristics were not consistent with the 2 known species found in alpacas. While seroconversion in camelids is reported to be near ubiquitous, myositis is rare, and this is the first case reported outside of the Americas.

The present investigation revealed that the role of natural infection with Sarcocystis in sheep was 84% in Niemy, 76% in Najdy, 89% in Sawakny sheep and 77% in goats slaughtered in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The distribution of infection among the examined organs was varied from the sheep strain to goats. Recorded muscle cysts were macroscopic 8-18% (mean 13.5%) and microscopic 73-85% (mean 79%). Macroscopic cysts were usually detected on the oesophagus. EM showed an ultrastructural similarities in the cyst walls and their parasite contents (metrocytes and merozoites) for all macroscopic cysts exam

The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is an intermediate host of at least three species of Sarcocystis, Sarcocystis dasypi, Sarcocystis diminuta, and an unidentified species; however, life cycles of these species have not been determined. Following feeding of armadillo muscles containing sarcocysts to the Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana), the opossums shed sporulated Sarcocystis sporocysts in their faeces. Mean dimensions for sporocysts were 11.0x7.5 microm and each contained four sporozoites and a residual body. Sporocysts were identified as Sarcocystis neurona using PCR and

Nine opossums, Didelphis aurita , were captured in the city of Seropédica, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and examined for species of Sarcocystis. Sporocysts were observed in the mucosal scrapings of the small intestine from 3 opossums. Five budgerigars, Melopsittacus undulatus , were infected with sporocysts from each of these infected opossums and 5 budgerigars were used as controls. Of the 15 sporocyst-treated budgerigars, 5 birds that received sporocysts from 1 of the infected opossums developed tissue parasites. Sarcocystis spp. are apicomplexan parasites that form sarcocysts mainly in the muscles or central nervous system of intermediate hosts and sporocysts in the intestines of definitive hosts. Three species, Sarcocystis falcatula, Sarcocystis calchasi and Sarcocystis halieti, are potentially pathogenic to their intermediate hosts. Over the past two decades, we have examined 72 thrushes across four species (redwing (Turdus iliacus), common blackbird (Turdus merula), song thrush (Turdus philomelos), and fieldfare (Turdus pilaris)) for sarcocysts to better understand their role as intermediate hosts.

Sarcocystis infections have been reported from numerous avian species. A remarkable number of valid Sarcocystis species infecting birds have been identified and named having avian species as intermediate hosts (n = 32). Only 14 species have their complete biological cycle known due to the difficulties in conducting in vivo experiments. In addition, at least 16 Sarcocystis species have been confirmed by molecular techniques to use birds as their definitive hosts. The present paper reviews recent findings in the field and remarks on the contribution of molecular tools to unravel important aspect

Meat infection with the coccidian protozoan zoonotic Sarcocystis spp. causes public health hazards and high economic loss. The current study aimed to investigate molecular identification, cyst histological examination and seroprevalence of Sarcocystis spp. in water buffaloes slaughtered in the main abattoirs of 6 Egyptian Governorates; Cairo, Giza, Beni-suef, Al-Sharqia, Qalyubia, and El-Beheira. Each buffalo was visually inspected for the presence of Sarcocystis macrocysts and blood samples were collected. Out of 900 examined water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis), 246 (27.3%) were found to be inf

Sarcocystis neurona is the predominant etiological agent of the infectious equine neurologic disease, equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), which is prevalent in the United States. A wealth of knowledge about S. neurona biology and its life cycle has accumulated over the last several decades. However, much remains unknown about the aberrant equine host's immune response to S. neurona and the relatively high prevalence of exposure to the protozoa but relatively infrequent occurrence of clinical neurologic disease. Mouse models simulating EPM are commonly used to study the disease due to num

A 21-yr-old intact male walrus ( Odobendus rosmarus divergens) presented with acute onset of shifting lameness, initially associated with breeding behaviors. Further clinical signs manifested, including muscle tremors, anorexia, hematuria, and coughing. Diagnostics were limited, as the animal would not offer behaviors for voluntary sample collection. Signs were addressed with anti-inflammatories, anticonvulsants, and antibiotics. The walrus developed cluster seizures and ultimately, respiratory and cardiac arrest. Postmortem lesions included meningoencephalitis with intra- and extracellular pr

Four valid species of Sarcocystis have been reported from the water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis): Sarcocystis fusiformis, Sarcocystis buffalonis, Sarcocystis levinei and Sarcocystis dubeyi. Here, we redescribe structure of S. fusiformis sarcocysts by scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM). Twenty-one macroscopic sarcocysts from oesophagus of the water buffalo in Egypt were examined by light microscopy, SEM and TEM. The sarcocyst wall was up to 9 μm thick, depending on the section and the technique. In 5 μm paraffin-embedded sections, the sarcocyst wall was indistinct, 2-5 μm thi

Sarcocystis nesbitti is an intracellular protozoan parasite found as sarcocysts within muscle fibers of intermediate hosts (monkey and baboon). The definitive host is suspected to be the snake. We report two cases from a larger cohort of 89 patients who had fever, headache, and generalized myalgia after a trip to Pangkor Island, Malaysia. Sarcocysts were detected in skeletal muscle biopsy specimens by light and electron microscopy from these two patients. DNA sequencing based on the 18S ribosomal DNA region identified the Sarcocystis species as S. nesbitti. We also identified S. nesbitti seque

A previous study showed that the susceptibility of hybrids between two Mus musculus musculus and Mus musculus domesticus did not apply to every parasite. The authors proposed that only parasites which exerted enough constraints would induce the selection of poorly compatible systems of resistance in the subspecies. This study completes the previous work. Experimental infections of mice of the two subspecies and their hybrids with the tissue-dwelling protozoan Sarcocystis muris show that hybrids are more susceptible to the coccidian than M. m. musculus and M. m. domesticus individuals. This res

BACKGROUND Acute muscular sarcocystosis (AMS) is one of a spectrum of diseases caused by the Sarcocystis parasite which infects humans in regions where it is endemic. Infections present with non-specific signs and symptoms and have been known to occur in clusters. CASE REPORT A 51-year-old Vietnamese male presented to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore with 3 weeks of fever, urticarial rash, non-productive cough, and lower back pain. He had an extensive travel history prior to presentation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed myositis involving the paravertebral and upper thigh muscles. The

Due to the lack of molecular research conducted, little is known about Sarcocystis species diversity in the fallow deer (Dama dama). Until now, Sarcocystis jorrini and Sarcocystis morae were described to form sarcocysts in the muscles of this host. In the present study diaphragm muscle samples of free-ranging fallow deer from Lithuania were investigated for Sarcocystis species. Sarcocysts were detected in 39 out of 48 (81.3%) fallow deer examined. Under a light microscope two types of sarcocysts having hair-like and finger-like protrusions were observed. Based on DNA sequence analysis of cox1

Myocardium and diaphragm samples of cattle (n = 521) from HeNan Province (China) were screened for Sarcocystis sarcocysts by histological examination, pepsin digestion, and molecular assays. Morphology and molecular assays were used for identification. The prevalence of Sarcocystis infection in cattle was 41.5% (216/521). Histological examination identified sarcocysts in the myocardium (49.4%, 200/405) and diaphragm (13.8%, 16/116) of cattle. Two species were identified, namely S. cruzi (41.3%, 215/521) and S. hominis (0.2%, 1/521). The findings of the present study indicate a high prevalence

An 8-year-old, 6-kg, male neutered Domestic Shorthair cat was presented to The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center (OSU-VMC) for difficulty breathing. Physical examination and thoracic radiographs indicated pneumonia, a soft-tissue mass in the left caudal lung lobe, and diffuse pleural effusion. The effusion was classified as modified transudate. Rare extracellular elongated (~5-7 μm × 1-2 μm) zoites with a central round to oval-shaped purple to deep purple vesicular nucleus with coarsely stippled chromatin and light blue cytoplasm were seen on a peripheral blood smear. Immunocompetent C57BL/6 mice were infected with Sarcocystis neurona merozoites to assess the protective immune response to active infection. Using a direct agglutination test, all infected mice seroconverted to S. neurona merozoite antigens by day 14 postinfection (PI). Further, mice developed splenomegaly and bilateral symmetrical lymphadenopathy by day 14 PI, which appeared to be resolving by day 28 PI. Histologic analysis revealed a marked increase in germinal center formation in the spleen and lymph nodes by day 14 PI. Corresponding to gross and histopathological changes, the percentage of

Sarcocystis is an important zoonotic protozoan parasites. This study collected 354 tissue samples (22 skeletal muscle samples, 74 diaphragm samples, 171 heart samples, and 87 esophagus samples) from 354 sheep across seven slaughterhouses in seven cities of Xinjiang. Screening for Sarcocystis spp. was performed using PCR targeting the 18S rRNA gene, with confirmation PCR targeting the COX 1 gene. The infection rate was determined to be 30.2% (107/354). All seven cities tested positive for Sarcocystis, with the highest infection rate in Tacheng (95.5%, 21/22) and the lowest infection rate in Kuq
