Uncertainty shrouds the number and identity of the species of Sarcocystis infecting horses in the United States. Horses are intermediate hosts for Sarcocystis fayeri, for which the domestic dog is the definitive host. Clinical signs and lesions associated with S. fayeri are not defined. Granulomatous myositis, especially involving the chest and dysphagia, is one of the clinical presentations associated with S. fayeri infections. Whether S. fayeri is the sole species that forms sarcocysts in equine muscles in the United States is not clear. Little is known of the molecular diagnosis of Sarcocys

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae septicemia was diagnosed in three of four moose found dead in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, in the spring of 1989. Type 17 E. rhusiopathiae was isolated from liver, lung, kidney, and lymph nodes of affected animals, which were in poor body condition, and suffering hair loss associated with tick (Dermacentor albipictus) infestations. Microscopic lesions consisted of mild, multifocal, necrotizing myocarditis, sarcocystosis, and lymph node atrophy. The bacterium may have gained entry to these animals via ingestion of, or percutaneous exposure to, contami

Southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis) population recovery is influenced by a variety of factors, including predation, biotoxin exposure, infectious disease, oil spills, habitat degradation, and resource limitation. This population has also experienced a significant genetic bottleneck, resulting in low genetic diversity. We investigated how two metrics, familial relatedness and genetic diversity, are correlated with common causes of mortality in southern sea otters, including cardiomyopathy, acanthocephalan (Profilicollis spp.) peritonitis, systemic protozoal infection (Toxoplasma gondii a

Four valid species of Sarcocystis have been reported from the water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis): Sarcocystis fusiformis, Sarcocystis buffalonis, Sarcocystis levinei and Sarcocystis dubeyi. Here, we redescribe structure of S. fusiformis sarcocysts by scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM). Twenty-one macroscopic sarcocysts from oesophagus of the water buffalo in Egypt were examined by light microscopy, SEM and TEM. The sarcocyst wall was up to 9 μm thick, depending on the section and the technique. In 5 μm paraffin-embedded sections, the sarcocyst wall was indistinct, 2-5 μm thi

Meat of the South American camelids (SACs) llama and alpaca is an important source of animal protein and income for rural families in the Andes, and a product with significant growth potential for local and international markets. However, infestation with macroscopic cysts of the coccidian protozoon Sarcocystis aucheniae, a parasitosis known as SAC sarcocystosis, significantly hampers its commercialization. There are no validated methods to diagnose the presence of S. aucheniae cysts other than carcass examination. Moreover, there are no available drugs or vaccines to cure or prevent SAC sarco

A deceased 9-wk-old male gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) with a history of decreased ambulation and diarrhea was submitted to the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory. No significant gross findings were evident on postmortem examination. Histologically, the cerebrum and brainstem had mild necrotizing meningoencephalitis with protozoal schizonts and merozoites. Additionally, glial cells contained intracytoplasmic and intranuclear viral inclusion bodies. Sections of the cerebrum were positive for canine distemper virus (CDV) and negative for Sarcocystis neurona on immunohistoch

Eosinophilic myositis in bovine striated muscle thought to be caused by a hypersensitivity reaction to the degradation of Sarcocystis tissue cysts, is a rare reason for carcase condemnation in the United Kingdom. This paper describes the identification of Sarcocystis cruzi associated with lesions of generalised eosinophilic myositis in three English beef carcases, by gross and histopathological examination followed by PCR with subsequent sequencing. Samples from two unaffected animals were also examined. Although sarcocystosis caused by S.cruzi is not considered a public health risk, the clini

The present status of food-borne parasitic zoonoses in West Germany is characterized by a relatively high frequency of toxoplasmosis, sarcocystosis and Taenia saginata infections. From empirical data it can be estimated that 4% of the German population become infected per year by Toxoplasma gondii as well as by Sarcocystis species (S. hominis, S. suihominis). The number of T. saginata infected persons is reckoned at 900,000, which is equal to an average prevalence of 1.5%. Due to meat inspection and to modern methods of breeding and keeping pigs trichinellosis and Taenia solium infections have

BACKGROUND: Sarcocystosis is a parasitic disease found worldwide, resulting from various Sarcocystis species. The current research was carried out in three significant economic areas in Egypt: Greater Cairo, the Nile Delta, and Upper Egypt. It aimed to investigate the occurrence of Sarcocystis spp. in locally bred water buffaloes Bubalus bubalis.
METHODS: To achieve this objective, 317 buffalos were slaughtered in different slaughterhouses in various regions of Egypt. Samples of heart, skeletal muscle, esophagus, and tongue were assessed using macroscopic and microscopic tests. Examination me

Sarcocystis parasites infect a wide range of animals, including reptiles, birds, and mammals, and have complex two-host prey-predator life cycle. Sarcocysts are mainly found in the muscles of intermediate hosts, and oocysts sporulate in the intestines of the definitive host. The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides), native to Asia and invasive in Europe, is a known disease carrier. However, studies on raccoon dogs in the transmission of Sarcocystis are scarce. Between 2019 and 2024, a total of 26 raccoon dog carcasses were collected in Lithuania. The results of a light microscopy examination

A geriatric captive bobcat (Lynx rufus) was euthanized due to progressive anorexia and lethargy. Meningoencephalitis with intralesional apicomplexan organisms was identified histologically. With immunohistochemistry, the organisms were immunolabeled by anti-Sarcocystis neurona antibodies. PCR targeting the ITS region of the parasite yielded an amplicon with >99.6% identity to several Sarcocystis dasypi, S. neurona, and S. speeri sequences. Amplification of the 18S region yielded a sequence that was 99.9% similar to sequences of both S. neurona (MN169125) and S. speeri (KX470746). Inflammatory

A survey of sarcocystis was made in camels from southern Ethiopia during a part of 1998-99. A total of 605 haematoxylin and eosin-stained tissue samples from cardiac, diaphragm, shoulder, masseter and oesophagus muscles of 121 adult camels and 20 tissue samples from four foetuses were examined for sarcocysts. Sarcocysts were detected in 55 of 121 (45.45%) camels examined. The infestation rate of oesophagus, diaphragm, shoulder, masseter and cardiac musculatures were 19.83, 11.57, 12.4, 8.26 and 9.17%, respectively. There was no significant (P > 0.05) variation between males (48.6%) and females

This is the first article of a series of papers reviewing "new findings" on animal diseases. The articles are arranged in order of animal species. This article reviews seven publications on new findings on or directly related to dog diseases. The following seven cases are discussed: Canine sarcocystosis in Central America. Copper accumulation in a Skye terrier: Antemortem diagnosis and cytoprotective bile acid therapy. Keratinocyte culture and use of a cultured epidermal autograft. Line 1 insertion mutation in Factor IX of dogs with hemophilia B. Not previously described localization of the le

The structure of the sarcocyst surface apparatus (SSA) was investigated for two sarcosporidian species: Sarcocystis muris (non-pathogenic) and S. fusiformis (pathogenic). The surface membrane, being the main SSA subsystem, makes numerous vesicle-like protrusions with different ultrastructural patterns. This made it possible to distinguish between four and three types of these protrusions in S. fusiformis and S. muris, respectively. Vesicles of similar structure, pinched off from the fully formed protrusions, were classified, correspondingly, in the same four and three different types. A presum

During 2002-15 we examined the causes of mortality in a population of northern sea otters ( Enhydra lutris kenyoni). Beachcast sea otters were collected primarily from the US coast of Washington. Although there are no permanent sea otter residents in Oregon, several beachcast otters were collected from the Oregon coast. Infectious diseases were the primary cause of death (56%) for otters we examined. Sarcocystosis was the leading infectious cause of death (54%) and was observed throughout the study period. Some infectious diseases, such as morbilliviral encephalitis and leptospirosis, were doc

A Sarcocystis sarcocyst was found in skeletal muscle of an adult female Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) killed in 1999 in central Sweden and subjected to necropsy as part of a nationwide monitoring program. The sarcocyst was microscopic, and ultrastructurally it had a relatively thin (~1 mm) sarcocyst wall with pleomorphic villar protrusions of Type 9 according to the classification of Dubey et al. [3]. This is the first record of a S. felis-like sarcocyst in the Eurasian lynx (L. lynx).

This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and distribution patterns of Sarcocystis spp. in cattle tissues in Chachapoyas province in the Peruvian tropical Andes. Additionally, the risk factors associated with the prevalence and the correlation of two diagnostic techniques (direct microscopy of squashed fresh muscle tissues and histopathology) were explored. The tongue, heart, esophagus, Latissimus dorsi muscle, and diaphragm of 210 animals slaughtered in the municipal slaughterhouse of Chachapoyas were evaluated by both techniques. Macroscopic sarcocysts were detected in 16.7% of tissues (CI

CASE DESCRIPTION: An underweight, lethargic adult female California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) became stranded along the California shore and was captured and transported to a rehabilitation hospital for assessment and care.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Initial physical assessment revealed the sea lion was lethargic and in poor body condition. Active myositis was diagnosed on the basis of concurrent elevations in activities of alanine aminotransferase and creatine kinase detected during serum biochemical analysis. Infection with Sarcocystis neurona was diagnosed after serologic titers increased
