A report of alveolar soft part sarcoma metastatic to the small bowel is presented. Hematogenous metastases to the small bowel from primary tumors outside the abdominal cavity are uncommon, and most remain asymptomatic and are not discovered until autopsy. However, small bowel metastases can lead to intestinal obstruction, intussuseption or even perforation. While metastases to the small bowel have been described for other tumor types, including melanoma and lung cancer, this is extremely uncommon for sarcoma, especially alveolar soft part sarcoma. We describe a 42-year-old male with a long his

Alveolar soft part sarcoma(ASPS)is a rare malignant tumor whose origin is unidentified, arising from deep soft tissue and affecting adolescents and young adults. ASPS is characterized by its abundant vascular network forming alveolar structures, and demonstrates frequent hematogenous metastasis. An ASPSCR1-TFE3 fusion gene derived from t(X;17)chromosome translocation is detected as a disease gene in all cases, and the ASPSCR1-TFE3 protein causes abnormal transcriptional regulation. We generated a mouse model for ASPS by introducing ASPSCR1-TFE3 into mouse embryonic mesenchymal cells. In the mo

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) represent 0.5% of sarcomas, defining a rarest among rare malignancies. It affects young adults, displaying slow-growing mass of the thigh, head and neck, and trunk. Although quite indolent, a majority of cases displays an advanced disease with lung bone or central nervous system metastasis. Complete surgery is the cornerstone of localized ASPS, and advanced diseases poorly respond to chemotherapy. Here discuss recent progress in molecular characterization of ASPS and future prospects of therapeutic approaches.
RECENT FINDINGS: ASPS is chara

BACKGROUND: Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare, highly vascularized soft tissue sarcoma characterized by a high frequency of metastatic disease and resistance to classical chemotherapy. The purpose of our analysis was to assess long-term sunitinib activity in the treatment of metastatic ASPS.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2009 and 2015, 15 patients were diagnosed with metastatic ASPS and received therapy with sunitinib at initial continuous daily dosing of 37.5 mg. Median age was 32 years. The primary tumor sites were lower extremities (8), trunk-retroperitoneum/pelvis (2), upper ext

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a distinctive mesenchymal tumor of uncertain histogenesis, which is exceedingly rare in the uterine cervix. We herein report the smallest (1.6 mm) ever published case of ASPS of the endocervix with the characteristic histomorphology and immunohistochemical findings. One-year follow-up was uneventful. Because of its seemingly much better prognosis, it is important in routine practice to distinguish ASPS from adenocarcinoma of the cervix. This is facilitated by the awareness that ASPS can occur in this location and if there is doubt about the diagnosis on rou

We present a case of alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) of the pectoris major muscle in a 20-year-old female. She felt a mass in her right side breast for 7 years. The lesion was almost the same size with occasional throbbing pain and tenderness. Fine needle aspiration of the tumor was performed in the OPD and suspicious abnormal cells were reported. Ultrasound (US) examination of the breast revealed a large heterogeneously hypoechoic lesion contiguous to the pectoris major muscle. Profound color flow signals were evident in both central and peripheral regions of the mass. Spectral Doppler US s

A case of alveolar soft part sarcoma arising some 20 years later in a site previously irradiated as a treatment for a spinal cord hemangioma is described. This is the first known case of radiation-associated alveolar soft part sarcoma, and it fulfills the criteria for a tumor to be radiation-induced. The coincidental finding of "viral-like" particles within some of the tumor cells was noted.

Alveolar soft-part sarcoma is a highly vascular soft-tissue tumor that is uniformly malignant. It comprises less than 1 per cent of all soft-tissue sarcomas. Patients with alveolar soft-part sarcoma most frequently are aged 15 to 35 years, and the soft tissues of the lower extremities typically are affected. In the pediatric population, it most frequently occurs in the head and neck and particularly affects the tongue and orbit. Alveolar soft-part sarcoma has been described as a primary lesion in the trunk, upper extremities, and retroperitoneum; more novel locations include the mediastinum, f

Alveolar soft-part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare soft tissue tumor that primarily involves the extremities. We report a case of a 30-year-old never-smoker man who presented with hematuria, dysuria, and constipation at an outside hospital. He was diagnosed with and treated for multiple episodes of urinary tract infection. However, he continued to have voiding symptoms for which a cystoscopy was performed and revealed a bladder neck mass. He underwent transurethral resection of a bladder tumor and was diagnosed with muscle-invasive urothelial carcinoma, nested variant, at an outside hospital. Subsequ

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare soft tissue sarcoma characterized by an alveolar or organoid arrangement of polygonal tumour cells separated by fibrovascular septa. A specific fusion gene [ASPS critical region 1 (ASPSCR1)-TFE3] was detected in ASPS. Despite being a slow-growing tumour without pain and dysfunction, ASPS is characterized by early metastasis, which leads to poor prognosis. Herein, we report a rare case of primary ASPS of the cheek harbouring ASPSCR1 (exon 7)-TFE3 (exon 5) fusion gene in a 21 year-old woman. This tumour was a well-circumscribed, smooth, round mass that

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) of the uterine cervix is a rare malignancy, and 21 cases have been reported the literature from every language (including our case). Herein, we describe a 17-yearold female patient who presented with active vaginal bleeding. Pelvic examination revealed a 1.6 ×1.0×0.5-cm-sized soft mass protruding from the uterine cervix. The final pathological diagnosis was ASPS of the uterine cervix. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were strongly nuclear positive for transcription factor E3. The patient remained disease free for 24 months without adjuvant therapy. The progn

Alveolar soft-part sarcoma is a rare tumour. Patients commonly present with distant metastases both at the time of diagnosis and late in the course of disease. We present a case of pancreatic metastasis, occurring more than six years after diagnosis. Treatment consisted in subtotal pancreatoduodenectomy with pylorus resection. Both specific patterns of relapse and treatment opportunities of this uncommon feature are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Intensive treatment in oncology often leads to severe complications, including infection and coagulation disturbances. Among the most serious are fungal infections which are often life-threatening, and difficult to recognize and treat. We present a patient with severe pneumonia and pleural effusion, that developed during treatment of a soft tissue sarcoma with pulmonary metastases.
CASE REPORT: A 16-year-old girl was admitted to the ITU because of marked dyspnoea, bilateral pneumonia and pleural effusion. She was intubated and placed on a ventilator, and bilateral pleural drains w

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) accounts for less than 1 % of all soft tissue sarcomas. ASPS presents a poor prognosis and develops frequent metastases, especially in the lungs, brain and bones. Current therapies, such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, are not fully effective and other alternative treatments are currently being studied. ASPS is predominantly found in the deep soft tissues of the lower extremities. To our knowledge, only thirteen primary intraosseous ASPS have been reported in the literature. In this study, we report two new cases of this exceedingly rare entity. Bot

RATIONALE: Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare soft tissue sarcoma harboring an ASPL-TFE3 fusion gene. Herein, we report a case of ASPS associated with brain metastasis. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for TFE3 antigen expression and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for TFE3 rearrangement were performed to arrive at an accurate diagnosis.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 47-year-old man was hospitalized for a headache and numbness of the lower limbs.
DIAGNOSES: Preoperative computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed 2 brain masses, 1 each in the right parietal and temporal bo

We have presented a case of typical alveolar soft part sarcoma probably originating from the soft tissues of the retroperitoneum with metastasis to the brain. An ultrastructural study including histochemical observation of the metastatic lesion was performed to clarify the nature of the crystals characteristic to the tumor cells of this disease. The crystalline structures have acid phosphatase activity at a histological and ultrastructural level. Our results suggested that they might be derived from coalescence of primary lysosomes or by digestive disintegration of some protein.

PURPOSE: Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a very rare type of soft tissue sarcomas which usually occurs in the limbs and trunk.
OBSERVATIONS: A 25-year-old woman presented with proptosis and redness of the right eye for 8-month. She suffered from severe right upper lid edema, conjunctival chemosis, downward displacement of the globe, and proptosis. Radiological imaging was nonconclusive. Histopathological evaluations confirmed ASPS. The patient underwent exenteration as a lifesaving procedure. At 16-month follow-up, the patient is stable without any signs of recurrence or metastasis.
