[Remarks on the morphology of forensically significant fly maggots].

For medico-legal purposes, usually as an aid in establishing the time of death, it is considered essential for forensic pathologists to have detailed entomological knowledge regarding the recognition and classification of several types of flies and their maggots, including the families of Calliphoridae, Muscidae and Sarcophagidae. We try to deal with the description of external and internal morphology of cyclorrhaphous maggots, the biology and lifecycles of blowflies, houseflies and fleshflies.

[Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Schiner, 1862) Diptera: Sacrophagidae) causing a vaginal myiasis in domesticated two-humped camels in the Mongolian People's republic].

Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Schiner, 1862) [Diptera: Sarcophagidae] was established as the causal agent of a vaginal myiasis in female camels in the Mongolian Democratic Republic. Changes of the genitals occur nearly the beginning of June, 4-6 weeks after foaling, a spontaneous recovery is seen at the beginning of October. Clinical signs of the vaginal myiasis and morphology of the three stages of larvae are described in detail.

Studies on myiasis producing flies collected by bait traps at Al Marg (Qalyobia Governorate), Egypt.

Myiasis is a real welfare problem. As a disease, it affects man and animals. In a study of myiasis producing flies in Al Marg District, sixteen species of dipterous flies were trapped. The predominant species was Musca domestica followed by Lueilia sericata and the least abundance was Wohlfahrtia magnifica. The overall abundance was in Summer followed by Spring and the least was in Winter. The most attractive bait was liver for members of family Calliphoridae and meat for members of family Muscidae and Family Sarcophagidae.

A Case of Nasopharyngeal Myiasis Caused by Sarcophaga sp.

Myiasis is a parasitic infestation of tissues and body cavities of vertebrates by Diptera larvae. Nasal myiasis is mostly caused by the Sarcophagidae and Calliphoridae families. Many predisposing factors play a role in the appearance of nasal myiasis. In the treatment of the disease, the use of antiseptics together with mechanical cleaning is recommended. In this report, a case of nasopharyngeal myiasis in a 75-year-old patient hospitalized in the intensive care unit is presented. Nine larvae were detected in the patient's nose. Larvae were removed from the area and were cleaned with iodine so

Immunomodulatory potential of Sarcophaga argyostoma larval hemolymph as a natural alternative to berenil in treating Trypanosoma evansi in vivo.

This study compared effects of diminazene aceturate (berenil), commonly used to treat domestic animals infected with Trypanosoma evansi, with the hemolymph of Sarcophaga argyostoma larva. The hemolymph may be acting as a possible natural alternative to berenil, based on immunomodulation mediated inflammatory response. Inflammatory mediators and histopathological changes in liver, kidney, and spleen of albino mice experimentally infected with T. evansi were studied. Mice were divided into five groups: G1, uninfected, untreated (negative control); G2, T. evansi infected (positive control); G3, i

Sarcophagid Myiasis in the Bufonid Rhinella alata in Panama.

Rhinella alata is a small terrestrial bufonid that occurs in Ecuador, Colombia, and Panama. Between January 2014 and October 2015, we inspected 339 R. alata from Panama and report myiasis in eight of these toads. All infested toads were male and presented with mobile dark fly larvae visible beneath the ventral skin. At necropsy, we identified the larvae as belonging to the family Sarcophagidae (flesh flies). Flesh flies have been variously considered as predators, parasitoids, and parasites of anurans. There are at least four species of flesh flies that infect adult amphibians in the Neotropic

Two new records of flies causing myiasis from Saudi Arabia with a survey of flies parasitizing goats and sheep in Jazan Region.

Despite the medical, veterinary and forensic relevance of myiasis-causing flies, knowledge of their diversity in Saudi Arabia is limited especially in the southern region. Therefore, a survey of myiasis-causing flies in the Jazan region was carried out using Red Top Fly Catcher traps baited with either decomposing beef liver or a lure composed primarily from fishmeal during the period April 2013-March 2014. Twelve known species were identified and recorded in this study, seven species of them belonging to Calliphoridae (Chrysomya, Lucilia, and Hemipyrella) and five species belonging to Sarcoph

The dog mummy, the ticks and the louse fly: Archaeological report of severe ectoparasitosis in Ancient Egypt.

The authors report the first archaeological case of dog ectoparasitosis in Ancient Egypt. The study of a mummified young dog dated to the Roman period suggests a significant infestation by two blood sucking ectoparasites, respectively the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus Latreille, 1806 (Acari: Ixodidae), the louse fly Hippobosca longipennis Fabricius, 1805 (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) as well as puparia of sarcosaprophagous flies (Diptera: Sarcophagidae and Calliphoridae), a potential source of myiasis. All of these species are known to be potential vectors of different pathogens which may

Aural Myiasis by Wohlfahrtia magnifica: Case Report.

A 5-year-old child living in Erzurum, Turkey, complaining of otalgia, otorrhea and pruritus in the right ear for three days, was examined. Otoscopic examination at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology revealed live maggots in the external auditory canal. Ten maggots were recovered and were identified as third stage larvae of Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae). Local and systemic antibiotic therapies were applied. No pathological findings were present at the follow-up examination after 15 days of therapy.

Myiasis of a perineal fistula.

We report a case of myiasis of a rectocutaneous fistula in a subject suffering from bone metastases after surgical resection of a neoplastic bladder. The fistula was infested by maggots identified as third-instar larvae of flies belonging to the family Sarcophagidae, genus Sarcophaga. The infestation was neither intestinal nor pseudointestinal; it was probably caused by a fly ovipositing on the fistula of the patient while having wound care at home, even though the possibility that the infestation might have occurred during hospitalization cannot be ruled out.

Infantile nosocomial myiasis in iran.

Myiasis, the invasion of live human tissue by larva of Diptera, is reported in the nasal cavity of a 5.5-year-old Iranian girl. She was referred from Golestan Province to the Shaheed Rajaei Heart Center in Tehran. In the 41th day after admission, a live parasite was found in her nasal secretions suction identified presumably as a second instar larvae of a facultative myiasis, Woholfartia nuba (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), on the basis of mtDNA-COI and morphological characteristics. Since presence of the larva was recorded after hospitalization, by definition, this infestation is considered a nosoc

Aural myiasis in a patient with Alzheimer's disease.

Myiasis is a disease caused by fly larvae feeding on the host's tissue. We report on a 49-year-old patient suffering from Alzheimer's disease with aural myiasis. Clinical examination revealed sanguineous and smeary otorrhoea on the left side with 16 alive maggots occupying the ear. They were removed from the external auditory canal and classified as larvae of the family Sarcophagida. Aural manifestation of myiasis may become dangerous if the petrous bone is affected. Entomological aspects, clinical characteristics, and treatment of this rare disease are reviewed.

Seasonal fluctuations in fly density and pathogen carriage in urban villages of Pudong New Area, Shanghai.

BACKGROUND: Flies are significant mechanical vectors of zoonotic pathogens, posing substantial risks for diarrheal disease transmission in urban environments with substandard sanitation. Many urban villages in Pudong New Area are characterized by conditions that facilitate fly proliferation and pathogen dissemination. METHODS: Our study was conducted from June to October 2024 in Taiping Village, a representative urban village in Pudong. Fly density and species composition were monitored across six environments (residential indoor/outdoor, green belts, wet market exteriors, restaurant exterior

Intra-puparial development of forensically important Sarcophaga princeps at different constant temperatures.

Sarcophaga princeps Wiedemann, 1830 (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is a species widely distributed in the Oriental and parts of the Palearctic regions. Documented cases have reported its colonization of human corpses and association with livestock myiasis, highlighting its significant value in forensic and medical research. However, current methods for estimating the intra-puparial age of S. princeps, which accounts for more than half of the entire immature stage, remain lacking. In this study, pupae were sampled at four constant temperatures (16, 22, 28, and 34 °C), and intra-puparial morphological

The first reported case of accidental intestinal myiasis in a domestic dog by the flesh fly, Sarcophaga africa (Wiedeman, 1824).

Myiasis occurs when fly larvae, or maggots, feed on the tissue, secretions or digestive content of a live vertebrate. Here, a rare case of accidental intestinal or enteric myiasis is reported in a domestic dog. The species of fly is molecularly identified as Sarcophaga africa (Wiedeman, 1824) using the barcoding region of cytochrome oxidase I (COI). A brief critique on the usage of the term "pseudomyiasis" is provided and the complex taxonomy of S. africa is briefly summarised in order to shed light on the erroneous use of S. cruenata and S. haemorrhoidalis with obvious downstream effects. Aural myiasis in an infant.

Aural myiasis is a rare clinical state that usually occurs in developing countries and in patients who mentally retarded or have poor personal hygiene. However, the prevalence has decreased over the years, and now it is very rare. The authors describe a case of aural myiasis caused by Wohlfartia magnifica in a five-month-old infant. The treatment used was a combination of suctioning and microsurgical forceps under an operative microscope. Additionally, topical and oral antibiotics were given to avoid secondary infection.
