Correlation between quadrant specific automatic visual field defect and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness as measured by scanning laser polarimetry in patients with primary open angle glaucoma.

The purpose of this study was to correlate quadrant specific Humphrey visual field mean deviation (MD) with retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness as measured by scanning laser polarimetry (GDx), and to determine whether there is a difference in the correlation with visual field defect between the Asian normative database provided by GDx (GDx database) and our native normative database (KMU database). In an age-matched study, a control group of 240 normal eyes underwent GDx. Another 60 eyes with visual field defect due to primary angle glaucoma underwent autoperimetry and GDx examination.

Detection of nerve fiber atrophy in apparently effectively treated papilledema in idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Since papilledema in idiopathic intracranial hypertension is a passive event not primarily affecting the visual tract, resolution with restitution ad integrum is expected if intracranial pressure is rebalanced. Retinal nerve fiber swelling due to papilledema in the acute phase and possible axon loss after long-lasting elevated intracranial pressure was investigated in a controlled cross-sectional study by scanning laser polarimetry. METHODS: A cohort of 23 patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension according to the modified Dandy diagnostic criteria, and 23 controls matche

Does Posterior Capsule Opacification Affect the Results of Diagnostic Technologies to Evaluate the Retina and the Optic Disc?

The visual outcome obtained after cataract removal may progressively decline because of posterior capsular opacification (PCO). This condition can be treated by creating an opening in the posterior lens capsule by Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. PCO optical imperfections cause several light reflection, refraction, and diffraction phenomena, which may interfere with the functional and structural tests performed in different ocular locations for the diagnosis and follow-up of ocular disease, like macular and optic nerve diseases. Some parameters measured by visual field examinations, scanning laser po

Current imaging of the optic disk and retinal nerve fiber layer.

The optic nerve head and the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) are the sites of clinically detectable glaucomatous tissue damage. Photographic techniques are used to document the optic disk and the RNFL to monitor patients with suspected primary open-angle glaucoma or to follow-up patients already suffering from this disease. New techniques such as laser scanning tomography (LST), scanning laser polarimetry, and optical coherence tomography have been introduced to quantify structural alterations with the aim of early detection of optic nerve or RNFL damage prior to functional loss. These novel,

GLAUDIA: A predicative system for glaucoma diagnosis in mass scanning.

Glaucoma is a serious eye disease characterized by dysfunction and loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) which can eventually lead to loss of vision. Robust mass screening may help to extend the symptom-free life for the affected patients. The retinal optic nerve fiber layer can be assessed using optical coherence tomography, scanning laser polarimetry (SLP), and Heidelberg Retina Tomography (HRT) scanning methods which, unfortunately, are expensive methods and hence, a novel automated glaucoma diagnosis system is needed. This paper proposes a new model for mass screening that aims to decrease

Reversible carotid artery narrowing in morning glory disc anomaly.

A 14-year-old boy with morning glory disc anomaly (MGDA) and normal visual and neurologic function displayed marked carotid artery narrowing on magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). This narrowing disappeared on a follow-up MRA six months later. Optic coherence tomography and scanning laser polarimetry disclosed a normal retinal nerve fiber layer in the eye with MGDA. MGDA has been reported in association with irreversible carotid artery stenosis leading to moya moya disease. This case suggests that mild cases of MGDA may be associated with reversible carotid artery narrowing owing to vasospas

Large-field high-speed polarization sensitive spectral domain OCT and its applications in ophthalmology.

We present a novel spectral domain polarization sensitive OCT system (PS-OCT) that operates at an A-scan rate of 70 kHz and supports scan angles of up to 40° × 40°. The high-speed imaging allows the acquisition of up to 1024 × 250 A-scans per 3D scan, which, together with the large field of view, considerably increases the informative value of the images. To demonstrate the excellent performance of the new PS-OCT system, we imaged several healthy volunteers and patients with various diseases such as glaucoma, AMD, Stargardt's disease, and albinism. The results are compared with clinically esta
