[Phenomenology, clinical diagnostics and treatment of hallucinations].

Phenomenology, clinical diagnostics and treatment of hallucinations Abstract. Hallucinations are perceptions without any stimulus. They occur typically in schizophrenia, but they can be found in other psychiatric or medical disorders as well. Recently, hallucinations have been increasingly reported to occur with a high prevalence in the general population and they are conceptualised as continuum from a physiological to pathological especially psychotic phenomenon. Schizophrenic hallucinations exhibit a special proximity to language and for this they can be considered as diagnostic. Clinically,

Computational Analysis of Semantic and Sentiment Features in Natural Language for Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia (SZ) patients exhibit abnormalities in language expression, including semantic confusion and apathy, which significantly impair social functioning. The existing studies on speech in schizophrenia patients mainly focused on semantic or grammatical features, and the integration analysis between emotional dynamics and linguistic fluency remained scarce. The present study aims to systematically analyze abnormal emotional expression in schizophrenia patients by employing natural language processing (NLP) models. METHOD: This study recruited 78 patients with SZ and 85 heal

Linguistics, human communication and psychiatry.

BACKGROUND: Psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics have extended our understanding of the abnormal communication seen in psychosis, as well as that of people with autism and Asperger's syndrome. Psycholinguistics has the potential to increase the explanatory power of cognitive and neuropsychological approaches to psychosis and new methods of assessment and therapy are now being developed, based on linguistic theory. METHOD: A MEDLINE literature search was used. RESULTS: Of 205 relevant articles identified, 65 were selected for review. CONCLUSIONS: Greater familiarity with linguistic theory

Modification of psychotic speech with mentally retarded patients.

Three chronic schizophrenics who were mild to severely mentally retarded were treated for a wide range of vocalisations characteristic of psychotic persons. Relevance of responses, speech duration, making nonsense statements, and changing the subject were among the behaviours treated in two experiments. Treatment consisted of instructions, performance feedback via audiotapes, modelling and speech rehearsal provided in twenty-five minute training sessions held each day on a one-to-one basis with a therapist. In all cases, treatment resulted in rapid changes of target behaviours in desired direc

Validity and reliability of the French-language version of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS).

OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the French-language version of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). METHOD: The validity and reliability of the PANSS were studied in a population of 342 patients diagnosed as schizophrenic according to DSM-III-R criteria. RESULTS: The study of the internal consistency and principal-component analysis of the initial structure with three subscales (positive, negative and general psychopathology) led us to investigate other factorial structures. We isolated a 5-factor structure (negative, po

fMRI activity correlated with auditory hallucinations during performance of a working memory task: data from the FBIRN consortium study.

INTRODUCTION: Auditory hallucinations are a hallmark symptom of schizophrenia. The neural basis of auditory hallucinations was examined using data from a working memory task. Data were acquired within a multisite consortium and this unique dataset provided the opportunity to analyze data from a large number of subjects who had been tested on the same procedures across sites. We hypothesized that regions involved in verbal working memory and language processing would show activity that was associated with levels of hallucinations during a condition where subjects were rehearsing the stimuli. Language pathway abnormalities in schizophrenia: a review of fMRI and other imaging studies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder with substantial genetic vulnerability. This review discusses recent neuroimaging studies reporting on impairment in brain functioning relevant to language processing in individuals with schizophrenia and those who are at a genetic risk for its development. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies have shown that schizophrenia is associated with deficits in language function, as well as structural and functional abnormalities in brain regions that are involved with language perception and processing. Individuals who are at genetic high risk for sch

[Psychiatric disorders in refugees and asylum seekers: psychological trauma as a cause?].

Posttraumatic stress disorder was diagnosed in two patients, men aged 26 and 29, an asylum seeker from the Middle East and a refugee from former Yugoslavia respectively. They had experienced severe psychotraumatic events. They were referred to a clinic for traumatised refugees and asylum seekers. Their psychiatric disturbances did not fit posttraumatic stress disorder, however. The former suffered from a schizophrenic disorder, the latter from psychosis and depression based on alcohol dependence. Growing awareness of the high prevalence of traumatic experiences in the population leads to a con

Association of formal thought disorder in schizophrenia with structural brain abnormalities in language-related cortical regions.

BACKGROUND: Formal thought disorder (FTD) in schizophrenia has been found to be associated with volume reductions in the left superior temporal cortex. However, there have been negative findings and some studies have also found associations in other cortical regions. METHOD: Fifty-one schizophrenic patients were evaluated for presence of FTD with the Thought, Language and Communication (TLC) scale and underwent whole-brain structural MRI using optimized voxel-based morphometry (VBM). Fifty-nine matched healthy controls were also scanned. RESULTS: Compared to 31 patients without FTD (global T

Symptom development in childhood onset schizophrenia.

Symptom development from birth to 12 years of age was examined in 18 children who met DSM-III criteria for schizophrenia with onset before 10 years of age. Using a follow-back design, symptom development was rated at each of four age levels using a DSM-III Symptom Rating Scale and the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist. Results revealed a gradual developmental unfolding of a broad spectrum of symptoms affecting social, cognitive, sensory and motor functioning and beginning many years before the appearance of schizophrenic symptoms--usually in early infancy. Prior to 6 years of age, severe lang

Language, communication, and the use of symbols in normal and autistic children.

The characteristics of language and other forms of communication in normal and autistic children are described. The main basis of comparison is the extent to which each group can comprehend and use spoken and nonspoken language and also develop inner language. It is suggested that the central problem in early childhood autism is an impairment of complex symbolic function affecting all forms of communication. This problem can occur on its own, but, in the majority of cases, it is associated with other impairments of the central nervous system. The relationship of early childhood autism to menta

Relationship of auditory verbal hallucinations with cerebral asymmetry in patients with schizophrenia: an event-related fMRI study.

The purpose of this study was to explore whether there are differences in cerebral asymmetry between subgroups of schizophrenic patients with or without auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) and normal controls by using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (efMRI). A total of 26 Chinese Han male patients with paranoid schizophrenia (diagnosed by DSM IV, including 13 patients with AVHs and 13 patients without) and 13 matched normal controls were recruited for the present study. The participants had been instructed to listen to short sentences from left or right side and to indica

Training skills in the psychiatrically disabled: learning coping and competence.

Social skills training methods represent a major strategy for psychiatric rehabilitation. Building skills in patients with schizophrenic and other major mental disorders is based on the assumption that coping and competence can override stress and vulnerability in reducing relapses and improving psychosocial functioning. For maximum efficiency, skills training needs to incorporate procedures and principles of human learning and information processing. Several models for skills training have been designed and evaluated, each of which has proved to be effective in raising the social competence o

The primacy of psychoanalytic intervention in recovery from the psychoses and schizophrenias.

Functional capacities, such as attachment and affect regulation, object relations capacity, symbolic function and language development, now documented by neuroscientific research and epigenetics, are reviewed. Results from this research, together with other factors, are posited to have contributed to effective contemporary psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic treatments for the psychoses and schizophrenias. Etiological factors involving the schizophrenias and other psychoses are considered both in terms of an epigenetic model, and in terms of how etiology may, or may not, affect clinical treat

Natural speech comprehension in bipolar disorders: an event-related brain potential study among manic patients.

BACKGROUND: Thought and language disturbances are crucial clinical features in Bipolar Disorders (BD), and constitute a fundamental basis for social cognition. In BD, clinical manifestations such as disorganization and formal thought disorders may play a role in communication disturbances. However, only few studies have explored language disturbances in BD at a neurophysiological level. Two main Event-Related brain Potentials (ERPs) have been used in language comprehension research: the N400 component, elicited by incongruous word with the preceding semantic context, and the Late Positive Comp

Structural asymmetries in the planum temporale in patients with schizophrenia: A meta-analysis.

Research on planum temporale (PT) asymmetries in schizophrenia has yielded inconsistent findings: Some studies suggest a link between atypical PT asymmetries and schizophrenia, their conclusions are often limited by low statistical power or limited representativeness, while others find no association. The PT, a region crucial for auditory and language processing, seems particularly relevant in schizophrenia because of the disorder's symptomatology regarding changes in language processing. This meta-analysis synthesizes literature on structural PT asymmetries in schizophrenia compared to contro
