Prevalence and characterization of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius isolated from companion animals and environment in the veterinary teaching hospital in Zambia, Africa.

The Republic of Zambia consists of only one veterinary teaching school at the University of Zambia (UNZA) where students and veterinarians are exposed to many bacterial pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (SP). The aim of this study was the characterization and antimicrobial susceptibility profile of eleven SA and 48 SP isolates from the veterinary hospitals' in- and outpatients and the environment. No isolate was resistant to cefoxitin by disk diffusion test and the corresponding resistance gene mecA was not found. In contrast, the resistance rat

Bovine papular stomatitis incidence in veterinary students.

Five cases of probable bovine papular stomatitis in faculty and students in a university veterinary clinic precipitated an intensive surveillance program. A senior class of veterinary medical students was questioned at the beginning of their clinical training to determine their history of exposure to cattle and presence of lesions resembling bovine papular stomatitis. Fifty-nine of the 115 students reported having had their hands in the mouths of cattle frequently. One of the 59 had experienced a hand lesion resembling bovine papular stomatitis. This class was maintained under close surveillan

[Management of allergic children in rural and urban environments. Results of our experience in a health network setting in the High Pyrenes].

The allergic children management at school seems to be more and more difficult, especially in rural areas. Far from the Universitary Hospital centres how to achieve the right diagnosis? In the country side school, inaccessible for the Emergency services, how to manage an efficient interventional group? The "Hauts Pyrénéens" practitioners have decided to set up a Health care Network to answer this requirement. A managing team includes the DDASS Inspector Physician (MISP), the Academy Inspector technical advisor Physician (MRDCT) and an Allergologist Practitioner. Two commissions have been set u

Reported rabies pre-exposure immunization of students at US Colleges of Veterinary Medicine.

In 2008, the US experienced a disruption in human rabies vaccine supplies, leading public health authorities to prioritize vaccine release for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and limit vaccine supplies for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PreEP) in high-risk groups. In 2008, the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) surveyed its member institutions on rabies vaccination policies and practices. Senior administrators at Colleges of Veterinary Medicine (CVMs) and departments of veterinary science and comparative medicine were asked to identify the person most knowledgeable about th

Human cryptosporidiosis associated with an epizootic in calves.

An outbreak of human cryptosporidiosis occurred among previously healthy persons in a veterinary medical teaching hospital. Human illness began after admission of calves from a farm which had been experiencing an epizootic of neonatal diarrhea due to Cryptosporidium. The clinical syndrome in humans was characterized by watery diarrhea, abdominal cramping, flatulence, and headache. Cryptosporidiosis was confirmed by zinc sulfate flotation of fecal specimens in four persons, three of whom had been responsible for the care and treatment of infected calves. A fourth patient had washed her husband'

Primary Care Clinical Rotations Are Associated with Shifts in Senior Veterinary Students' Perceptions of Scope, Complexity, and Career Alignment.

The study objective was to evaluate changes in senior veterinary students' perceptions of companion animal primary care and career preferences following a primary care clinical rotation. A multi-institutional survey was administered to veterinary students at 10 US colleges of veterinary medicine before and after a companion animal primary care rotation between January 2024 and July 2025. Survey items were organized into six conceptually defined perception groupings. Changes in perception scores and agreement with a career goal were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models with random interce

Efficacy validation of a low-cost handmade simulator (SIMCA-COW) in palpation, ultrasonography evaluation, and artificial insemination in cows.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Using simulators in high education enables practical training by repetition in circumstances close to reality reducing the stress of both animal and operator. The limited resources of veterinary schools, the increase in the number of students in lecture halls, and the low availability of animals for teaching due to welfare regulations, reduce teaching opportunities with live animals being simulator as the better alternative. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a low-cost handmade simulator (SIMCA-COW) in eight veterinary students inexperienced in palpation, ultrasono

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perceptions Associated With Antimicrobial Stewardship Among Veterinary Students: A Multi-Country Survey From Nigeria, South Africa, and Sudan.

In African countries, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) issue remains pertinent. Despite this, little efforts have been made to assess the future veterinary prescribers on their knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) related to antimicrobial usage. This multi-country survey attempts to explore the KAP of future veterinarians on stewardship of antimicrobial and identify knowledge gaps. Eight veterinary schools participated from Nigeria, Sudan and South Africa. Data regarding perceptions and knowledge were analyzed using Chi-square χ2 test, Spearman's (Rho) Rank order correlation and factor analy

An upstream approach to veterinary workforce wellbeing: an evaluative review of an embedded wellbeing curriculum in veterinary education.

Veterinary professionals work in demanding environments shaped by individual, relational, organizational, and systemic pressures. Veterinary education can therefore serve as an upstream setting for developing both clinical competence and the capabilities needed for sustainable professional engagement and wellbeing. Competency-based veterinary education offers a structure for treating wellbeing as a professional capability that can be taught, practiced, assessed, and evaluated. This study reports an evaluative review of a longitudinal wellbeing curriculum embedded within the Doctor of Veterinar

[Blood analysis 200 years ago--the theory and practice of hematoscopy in veterinary medicine].

Since antiquity the macroscopic judgement of blood obtained through phlebotomy was an important constituent of the medical diagnostic procedures. In the progress of blood sedimentation, the "eucrasia" or the "dyscrasia" of the humours became visible. This paper summarizes the historical and theoretical basis of the haematoscopy, and offers insight into the haemodiagnostic practices of a veterinarian at the end of the 18th century. The authority is the professor of veterinary art and medical advisor Anton Joseph Will (1752-1821), mental father and founder of the veterinary school in Munich, whi

Adding the Namibian Voice to the Professional Identity Conversation: Using Narrative Interviews to Explore Professional Identity in Namibian Veterinary Students.

A well-developed professional identity is an essential component of professional well-being and sustainable practice. Emerging research demonstrates that identity formation and dissonance are perceived, constructed, and managed differently in different global contexts, and yet veterinary curricula intended to support professional identity formation (PIF) and assist students encountering identity dissonance often remain rooted in research from white, Western cultures. This project aims to explore veterinary students' PIF in Namibia, a highly multicultural and multilingual context, and to identi

A general survey of tumours in the horse.

Published figures from veterinary schools indicate that tumours may account for about 1 to 3 per cent of surgical cases. In this paper an account is given of clinical and pathological aspects of the tumours that are most likely to be encountered in practice, either as visibly or palpably detectable masses of tissue, or as internal tumours responsible for clinical signs. Amongst the common and important tumours dealt with, the most prominent are "equine sarcoid", squamous-cell carcinoma (of eye region and of glans penis), granulosa-cell tumours and melanomas. Well over a hundred references prov

Value of anatomopathological examination in goats with a positive comparative intradermal tuberculin test as part of a tuberculosis control programme.

BACKGROUND: Caprine tuberculosis is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium caprae. A tuberculosis control programme has been implemented using the comparative intradermal tuberculin (CIT) test. However, infection with Corynebacterium pseudotuberculsis and infection with or vaccination against Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) may have a negative impact on specificity. Therefore, a postmortem examination is necessary to verify the tuberculosis status of each animal where positive predictive value is low. METHODS: Thirty-seven CIT-positi

Evaluation of environmental sampling methods for detection of Salmonella enterica in a large animal veterinary hospital.

Environmental surveillance for Salmonella enterica can be used for early detection of contamination; thus routine sampling is an integral component of infection control programs in hospital environments. At the Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (PUVTH), the technique regularly employed in the large animal hospital for sample collection uses sterile gauze sponges for environmental sampling, which has proven labor-intensive and time-consuming. Alternative sampling methods use Swiffer brand electrostatic wipes for environmental sample collection, which are reportedly effective and ef
