Effect of artificial scotomas on open-loop disparity vergence eye movements.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of an artificial scotoma on open-loop disparity vergence responses (DVRs) and vergence control mechanisms, we examined open-loop DVRs to disparity stimuli using monocular artificial scotomas in normal subjects. METHODS: Using a mirror haploscope with two computer monitors, we delivered disparity stimuli on a pair of random dot patterns subtending 40 by 30 degrees at 47 cm from each eye. The scotomas were black circles located in the center of a random dot pattern for the left eye. Eye movements of both eyes were recorded with a magnetic search coil system.

[Case of brain infarction in the anterior choroidal artery territory with homonymous scotomas].

We report a case of brain infarction in the anterior choroidal artery territory accompanied homonymous scotomas. A 59-year-old man with diabetes mellitus felt weakness in his left upper and lower extremities. He was admitted to our hospital with mild hemiparesis on his left side. He noticed a small black spot in the left inferior portion of his visual field; however, this disappeared within one minute. He had no visual defects as assessed by a confrontation test, but a Goldmann visual field test revealed that there were homonymous scotomas in the left inferior portion of the visual field. Brai

Comparison of Compass and Humphrey Perimetry: Test-Retest Variability at Glaucomatous Scotoma edges.

PRCIS: The Compass perimeter, despite its integrated eye-tracking, demonstrated similar variability at scotoma borders with 24-2 visual field testing in glaucoma patients compared to the conventional Humphrey Field Analyzer. PURPOSE: Increased variability at the borders of glaucomatous scotomas measured with the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA) has been partly attributed to gaze instability. The Compass perimeter (CMP), which incorporates eye tracking to compensate for gaze instability, may reduce variability at scotoma borders. This study determined the test-retest variability (TRV) at scotoma

C-Shaped Scotoma after Complicated Cesarean Section: A Case of Acute Macular Neuroretinopathy.

Acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN) is a rare retinal disease that produces transient or permanent visual impairment and occurs predominantly in young, Caucasian women of childbearing age. It is often characterized by wedge-like macular lesions. Although the cause of AMN is unknown, recent research suggests a microvascular etiology. Various vascular pathologies, including post-viral illness, oral contraceptives, and use of vasoconstrictive agents, have been associated with AMN. We present a case of a woman with C-shaped visual field defects in both eyes after inadvertent exposure to intraveno

Optic Disc Morphology and Paracentral Scotoma in Patients with Open-Angle Glaucoma and Myopia.

This study's aim was to investigate the association between optic disc morphology and the occurrence of paracentral scotoma in eyes with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and myopia. Two-hundred and eleven myopic eyes with OAG were classified into three groups according to the location of visual field (VF) defect (99 paracentral scotoma, 65 peripheral scotoma, and 47 no VF defect). Optic disc morphology was assessed based on the tilt ratio and eccentricity of the central retinal vessel trunk (CRVT). Clinical characteristics of the three groups were compared, and factors affecting the occurrence of par

Consistency of preferred retinal locus across tasks and participants trained with a simulated scotoma.

After loss of central vision following retinal pathologies such as macular degeneration (MD), patients often adopt compensatory strategies including developing a "preferred retinal locus" (PRL) to replace the fovea in tasks involving fixation. A key question is whether patients develop multi-purpose PRLs or whether their oculomotor strategies adapt to the demands of the task. While most MD patients develop a PRL, clinical evidence suggests that patients may develop multiple PRLs and switch between them according to the task at hand. To understand this, we examined a model of central vision los

Intrasession and Intersession Reproducibility of Artificial Scotoma pRF Mapping Results at Ultra-High Fields.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) combined with population receptive field (pRF) mapping allows for associating positions on the visual cortex to areas on the visual field. Apart from applications in healthy subjects, this method can also be used to examine dysfunctions in patients suffering from partial visual field losses. While such objective measurement of visual deficits (scotoma) is of great importance for, e.g., longitudinal studies addressing treatment effects, it requires a thorough assessment of accuracy and reproducibility of the results obtained. In this study, we quanti

Comparison of pattern electroretinograms of glaucoma patients with parafoveal scotoma versus peripheral nasal step.

Retinal ganglion cells are distributed disproportionately with retinal eccentricity. Pattern electroretinogram (PERG) stimuli resulted in reduced responses with more eccentric stimuli. Therefore, we investigated whether PERG amplitude is associated with the location of visual field (VF) defect in primary open-angle glaucoma. Data from Twenty-nine glaucoma patients with a parafoveal scotoma (PFS) within the central 10° of fixation, 23 glaucoma patients with a peripheral nasal step (PNS), and 27 normal control subjects were analyzed in this study. Electroretinograms (ERGs) were obtained using a

fMRI of the rod scotoma elucidates cortical rod pathways and implications for lesion measurements.

Are silencing, ectopic shifts, and receptive field (RF) scaling in cortical scotoma projection zones (SPZs) the result of long-term reorganization (plasticity) or short-term adaptation? Electrophysiological studies of SPZs after retinal lesions in animal models remain controversial, because they are unable to conclusively answer this question because of limitations of the methodology. Here, we used functional MRI (fMRI) visual field mapping through population RF (pRF) modeling with moving bar stimuli under photopic and scotopic conditions to measure the effects of the rod scotoma in human earl

Fluctuations of visual field interpretation related to cluster and scotoma analysis by one interpreter.

A total of 189 numerical printouts of the visual fields of 189 eyes of individuals either suspected of or verified as having glaucoma and displaying varying degrees of glaucomatous visual field damage were analyzed by one expert interpreter. The amount of clusters (or scotomas) was counted and delineated in each visual field under both a more stringent and a more liberal criterion. The interpretations of the visual fields differed significantly in both groups, as did the subjective certainty the interpreter allotted to his assessment. In the group of certain decisions, only 144 defects were as

Perceptual characteristics of scotomas modulate visual performance under simulated prosthetic vision.

Objective.Retinal prostheses aim to restore vision in patients blinded by photoreceptor degeneration, yet functional outcomes vary substantially across individuals. Scotomas-regions of reduced or absent visual sensitivity-are a defining feature of retinal degenerative diseases, but their perceptual status is often underappreciated in the design and evaluation of prosthetic vision. Here, we investigated how differences in scotoma perception influence perceptual visual task performance and perceptual representations.Approach.Psychophysical experiments were conducted using a virtual reality platf

The Role of the Inner Nuclear Layer for Perception of Persisting Tiling Inside a Monocular Scotoma.

We report two patients, one with and one without long-term persistent tiling inside an arcuate macular scotoma. In both cases, the scotoma was caused by a cilioretinal artery occlusion. Both patients were almost identical regarding the location and extent of the scotoma. In both cases, there was a comparable degree of atrophy on optical coherence tomography for the retinal nerve fibre, ganglion cell, and inner plexiform layers. The main difference was the preservation of the inner nuclear layer in the patient with persistent tiling. In this patient, optical coherence angiography demonstrates p

Considering Apical Scotomas, Confusion, and Diplopia When Prescribing Prisms for Homonymous Hemianopia.

PURPOSE: While prisms are commonly prescribed for homonymous hemianopia to extend or expand the visual field, they cause potentially troubling visual side effects, including nonveridical location of perceived images, diplopia, and visual confusion. In addition, the field behind a prism at its apex is lost to an apical scotoma equal in magnitude to the amount of prism shift. The perceptual consequences of apical scotomas and the other effects of various designs were examined to consider parameters and designs that can mitigate the impact of these effects. METHODS: Various configurations of sec

Phosphenes and transient scotomas induced by magnetic stimulation of the occipital lobe: their topographic relationship.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the visual cortex is known to induce phosphenes and is able to suppress visual perception. To address the topographic relationship of phosphenes and transient scotomas, the visual field of 10 normal subjects was investigated using a perimetric approach. The central visual field (diameter: 20 degrees) was tested at 32 sites. Perceptual thresholds were determined by presenting 1 ms test spots flashed with varying intensity in random order. TMS was applied with a focal figure-of-eight coil placed over the inion. All subjects perceived phosphenes, mostly

Peripheral scotoma associated with chronic ethmoidal sinusitis. A case report and review of the literature.

Diseases of the paranasal sinuses may cause visual disturbances, especially diminished visual acuity and visual field defects, by affecting the optic nerve. We report the unusual case of a female patient with unilateral peripheral, quadrantic scotoma and concomitant chronic ethmoidal sinusitis. Visual acuity was not diminished. Despite extensive diagnostic examinations no other cause of the scotoma could be evaluated. As conservative therapy had been unsuccessful, endonasal pansinus operation was performed. Upon surgery, nearly all ethmoidal cells appeared to be filled with polypous mucosa. Th
