Experts have recommended daily obesity prevention goals: ≥5 fruits/vegetables, <2 hours of screen time, >1 hour of physical activity, and no sugar-sweetened beverages (5-2-1-0). The authors analyzed National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data for 1999-2002 to determine the proportion of US adolescents (12-19 years) who would have met each goal prior to dissemination of the 5-2-1-0 recommendations. Merely 0.4% would have met all goals; 41% would have met none. Only 9% consumed ≥5 fruits/vegetables, 27% reported <2 hours of screen time, 32% had >1 hour of physical activity, and 14% con

Whether leisure screen time (LST) is causally related to frailty remains uncertain. We used Mendelian randomization (MR) to examine the association of genetically proxied LST with frailty risk and to explore potential mediation through cardiometabolic factors. Summary-level genome-wide association study data for LST, frailty, and candidate mediators were obtained from large consortia. Two-sample MR was conducted using inverse-variance weighted (IVW) as the primary estimator, with MR-Egger, weighted median, weighted mode, MR-PRESSO, and radial MR used as complementary analyses. A two-step MR fr

The objective was to investigate screen time (ST) and objectively measured sleep quality in college students. Participants were undergraduate students attending a large metropolitan public university in the southeastern U.S. Participants wore accelerometers on their wrist for 24hr/day for 14 days to capture sleep outcomes, and completed a survey reporting ST duration. Analyses explored weight-status, race/ethnicity, and sleep patterns (presence of daytime sleep) differences among students. Participants (n=29, 86% female, ~21.5 years old, 38% White, 35% Overweight/Obese) slept for an average of

OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between self-reported screen time and symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression in adolescents.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 982 adolescents aged between 12 and 15 years, enrolled in public schools in Jacarezinho (PR), Brazil. Screen time was assessed by the question "Considering a typical day, how much time do you spend watching TV, playing videogame, using computer or smartphone?" The DASS-21 questionnaire (short form) was used to assess symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Crude and adjusted analyses (age, sex, and mat

Current trends in drug use include polydrug use as well as an ever-changing landscape of novel psychoactive substances. Immunoassay-based urine drug screens limited to classic drugs of abuse do not have the scope necessary to identify patients with drug intoxications or drug misuse. Mass spectrometry is an alternative method that is both sensitive and specific. In this chapter, we present a liquid chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometry-based method for qualitative comprehensive urine drug screening. The method runs in positive mode and encompasses over 1000 basic compounds, including phar

BACKGROUND: Although it is well acknowledged that psychosocial risk factors (PSRF) such as low socio-economic status, stress, social isolation, negative emotions and negative personality patterns may contribute to the development and adverse outcome of cardiovascular disease (CVD), screening for PSRF in CVD patients is usually limited to anxiety and depression, mainly for feasibility reasons. We therefore aimed to develop a user-friendly screening battery for routine assessment of PSRFs and to evaluate this instrument regarding feasibility of application, PSRF results and attendance of psychol

AIM: Early childhood screen exposure leads to multiple adverse health events and parents have a major influence on their children's screen time. Our aim was to determine the association between maternal acceptance-rejection/control behaviours and excessive screen exposure in pre-school children.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, children aged 2-5 years who had daily screen time <1 h (n = 76) and >4 h (n = 62) were enrolled. A structured survey form and Parental Acceptance-Rejection/Control Questionnaire were completed by mothers.
RESULTS: Total rejection scores were found t

UNLABELLED: Obese adolescents spend a disproportionate time in screen-based activities and are at higher risk for clinical depression compared to their normal-weight peers. While screen time is associated with obesity and cardiometabolic risk factors, little is known about the relationship between screen time and mental health. This cross-sectional study examines the association between duration and types of screen time and depressive symptomatology (subclinical symptoms) in a sample of 358 (261 female; 97 male) overweight and obese adolescents aged 14-18 years. Self-report measures assessed d

Genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection is the leading cause of bacterial sexually transmitted disease in industrialised countries, particularly among young people. The consequences of chlamydial infection may involve urethritis, cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, tubal factor infertility, epididymitis and prostatitis. In addition, chlamydial infection increases the risk of acquisition of human immunodeficiency virus and has been associated with cervical cancer. Although screening programmes exist in a number of countries, the continuously increasing prevalence of chla

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Dental caries remains one of the most prevalent chronic conditions in childhood, while digitalscreen use among children has surged well beyond recommended limits. Despite growing evidence linking these twotrends, screen exposure is rarely incorporated into paediatric oral health frameworks. This review aims to synthesisecurrent evidence on the relationship between digital device overuse and oral health outcomes in children.
METHODS: A narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Search terms includedscreen time, dental caries, oral hygiene, diet

The purpose of this survey study was to comprehensively examine if various types of screen time differed between children with overweight or obesity (OWOB; ≥ 85th BMI percentile) vs. normal weight (NW: < 85th BMI percentile) in a largely socioeconomically disadvantaged population. 739 parent proxies of children aged 5-11 years (M = 9.27, SD = 1.49) mostly enrolled in Medicaid (83.9%) in a United States (US) southern state responded to an online questionnaire called the Movement Behavior Questionnaire - Child (MBQ-C; open version). Eight items of the MBQ-C separately measured passive and intera

OBJECTIVE: This paper aimed to review and synthesize screen time research among children and youth with disabilities.
METHODS: Seven online databases were searched, and a machine learning-assisted systematic review model was used to identify relevant studies. English and French papers reporting on screen time among children and youth with a disability were eligible. Extracted data were synthesized by participant age, followed by type of screen time reporting. Meta-analyses were conducted to estimate daily screen time and adherence to screen time guidelines using random effects meta-analysis.
