A 16-year-old girl was seriously stung on her abdomen by a jellyfish as she jumped on her small surfboard. She and her mother identified the animal from photographs as Chrysaora fuscescens. Within several minutes the girl developed a massive abdominal cutaneous eruption composed of hundreds of punctuate erythematous papules and macules, which persisted for 5 to 7 days. Persistent urinary incontinence and biliary dyskinesia appeared over the following night. It is theorized that a systemic uptake of venom occurred percutaneously after contact of the jellyfish tentacles with her abdominal skin.

Global warming is reshaping marine ecosystems by altering species distributions, trophic interactions, and the timing of life-cycle events. Gelatinous zooplankton, such as jellyfish, are key players in these dynamics, yet long-term field records remain rare, limiting our ability to assess their ecological responses to climate change. Here, we analyzed a 13-year time series (2010-2023, excluding 2012) of Aurelia coerulea (von Lendenfeld, 1884) in Thau Lagoon, a French Mediterranean coastal ecosystem, based on bi-monthly sampling. Abundance and body size were quantified for both ephyra and medus

Marine ecotoxicology typically relies on a limited number of invertebrate models used to assess the effects of anthropogenic stressors, including pollutants. Nevertheless, selected model species may not fully represent marine communities and Including sensitive and ecologically relevant organisms is thus crucial. Despite jellyfish are exposed to pollutants via multiple pathways, few species have been investigated for ecotoxicity purposes focusing on the ephyra stage as suitable due to its susceptibility to toxic compounds. Here we explore the use of the mauve stinger P. noctiluca (ephyra stage

INTRODUCTION: The dermatological effects of box jellyfish envenomation among stinging victims in Thailand are not well reported, particularly concerning chronic effects. For first aid, different recommendations indicate the necessity for the removal of tentacles in life-threatening situations. This study aimed to describe the dermatological effects of box jellyfish envenomation and propose recommendations regarding first aid for victims in urgent care or life-threatening situations.
METHODS: Surveillance systems and Toxic Jellyfish Networks were established to improve detection and investigat

Background: Recent studies demonstrated that, in the past few years, the number of jellyfish species is increasing worldwide; this increase can be explained by environmental and climatic reasons. Contacts with jellyfish can cause acute and chronic effects, including allergic reactions. Although anaphylaxis caused by jellyfish is a rare event, repetitive stings during bathing as well as marine sports and job activities represent important risk factors that can increase the probability of sensitization. Recently, it was also pointed out the possibility of anaphylaxis caused by jellyfish ingestio

OBJECTIVE: To present two cases of Mondor's disease of the breast resulting from jellyfish stings in Western Australia.
CLINICAL FEATURES: A 30-year-old Caucasian woman presented with a palpable thickened cord in her right breast. The straightness of the cord suggested a thrombosed lymphatic. A 50-year-old Caucasian woman presented with an obvious palpable cord extending most of the length of her left breast. Mammography demonstrated no abnormality. Both women reported having been stung by jellyfish a month earlier.
INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: As Mondor's disease is a benign, self-limiting dis

Three cases of jellyfish envenomation which occurred in the Indian Ocean and the Andaman Sea are reported. In each instance the stinging occurred on the upper extremities, and impaired the circulation to the stung limb(s), with absent distal arterial pulses, regional cyanosis, and the threat of distal gangrene. One of the patients is seriously and permanently handicapped, with bilateral upper-limb numbness and paresis; another patient has permanent sensory loss; the third patient, who also had brachial-artery narrowing that was demonstrated by angiography, made an uneventful recovery. The firs

Borate was directly chelate-extracted from foods with 5% 2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol (EHD) in n-hexane-n-butyl acetate mixture (8 + 2), from which borate was selectively transferred into 1% NaOH, since EHD-chelated boron did not react with curcumin to develop color. Finally, an aliquot of the alkaline solution was acidified with HCl and reacted with curcumin in a rotary evaporator. Color development was increased by heating for 8 min at 80 degrees C under reduced pressure of 16 mm Hg. Frozen shrimp and prawns (peeled and with shells) and salted jelly fish were analyzed by the proposed method. Resul

BACKGROUND: Although cnidarians are mostly marine organisms, the occurrence of freshwater jellyfish frequently arouses the interest of ecologists, due to their sudden and unusual appearances in natural and artificial water bodies around the world.
METHODS: This study describes a series of cases compatible with cnidarian envenomation that occurred coincidentally in time and space with the presence of Craspedacusta sowerbii Lankester, 1880 jellyfish in the province of Misiones (El Saltito stream) in January 2022. A year later, its presence was confirmed in another watercourse of this province (

Ecological profiling of non-native species is essential to predict their dispersal and invasiveness potential across different areas of the world. Cassiopea is a monophyletic taxonomic group of scyphozoan mixotrophic jellyfish including C. andromeda, a recent colonizer of sheltered, shallow-water habitats of the Mediterranean Sea, such as harbors and other light-limited, eutrophic coastal habitats. To assess the ecophysiological plasticity of Cassiopea jellyfish and their potential to spread across the Mare Nostrum by secondary introductions, we investigated rapid photosynthetic responses of j

Microplastics are ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems, but little information is currently available on the dangers and risks to living organisms. In order to assess the ecotoxicity of environmental microplastics (MPs), samples were collected from the beaches of two islands in the Guadeloupe archipelago, Petit-Bourg (PB) located on the main island of Guadeloupe and Marie-Galante (MG) on the second island of the archipelago. These samples have a similar polymer composition with mainly polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). However, these two samples are very dissimilar with regard to their cont

Modified handling is often claimed to reduce (sub-)lethal impacts among organisms caught-and-released in fisheries. Improving welfare of discarded fish warrants investigation, when their survival is of both economic and ecological importance. In this study, juvenile yellowfin bream (Acanthopagrus australis) were trawled in an Australian penaeid fishery and then discarded after on-board sorting in either dry or water-filled (modified) trays and with delays in starting sorting of either 2 or 15 mins. Blood plasma cortisol, glucose and potassium were sampled immediately from some yellowfin bream,

The aim of this study was a preliminary investigation on the possibility of using the ephyra of Scyphozoan jellyfish Aurelia aurita (Linnaeus, 1758), the common moon jellyfish, as an innovative model organism in marine ecotoxicology. A series of sequential experiments have been carried out in laboratory in order to investigate the influence of different culturing and methodological parameters (temperature, photoperiod, ephyrae density and age) on behavioural end-points (% of Frequency of Pulsations) and standardize a testing protocol. After that, the organisms have been exposed to two well kno

Venoms contain highly complex mixtures that typically include hundreds of different components and have evolved independently in a diverse range of animals including platypuses, shrews, snakes, lizards, fishes, echinoderms, spiders, wasps, centipedes, sea snails, cephalopods, jellyfish and sea anemones. Many venom genes evolved through gene duplication. Gene duplication occurs in all domains of life and provides the raw substrate from which novel function arise. In this review, we focus on the role that gene duplication has played in the origin and diversification of venom genes. We outline th

We have tested the dermatotoxicity of some purified nematocysts preparations of Aurelia aurita, Chrysaora hysoscella, Rhizostoma pulmo, in 25 volunteers by means of scratch-patch test. Our results show the validity of the method used for nematocyst purification. The few skin reactions obtained confirm the low dermototoxicity of the jellyfish studied.

This paper presents a case of Irukandji syndrome (envenomation by the jellyfish, Carukia barnesi) with pulmonary oedema and hypokinetic cardiac failure. This case highlights the need for victims (and operators of tours venturing into the waters of North Queensland) to treat even apparently innocuous stings with vinegar and to avoid freshwater bathing and rubbing of stings immediately after such incidents. It also reinforces the use of phentolamine to treat the symptoms of catecholamine release associated with the syndrome. This patient required inotropic support and further underlines the need

The identification of multifunctional peptides derived from marine byproducts represents a significant challenge in the field. In Thailand, the fisheries industry exports salted jellyfish, which results in low-value byproducts primarily employed for animal feed. Previous studies have indicated the bioactivities of jellyfish protein hydrolysates from Lobonema smitthii; however, the multifunctional properties of Rhopilema hispidum remain largely unexplored. This research aimed to characterize synthetic bioactive peptides sourced from the byproducts of salted jellyfish (R. hispidum), with a speci
