CRYPTOSPORIDIUM SPECIES AND GIARDIA SPECIES PREVALENCE IN MARINE MAMMAL SPECIES PRESENT IN THE GERMAN NORTH AND BALTIC SEAS.

Marine mammals are known to harbor Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp., especially species or genotypes commonly associated with humans. In animals of the North and Baltic Seas, this information is missing. In this study, fecal samples ( n = 97) from harbor porpoises ( Phocoena phocoena), harbor seals ( Phoca vitulina), and grey seals ( Phocoena phocoena) present in German waters were examined via microscopic examination (by using a modified Ziehl-Neelsen technique [MZN]) to estimate the prevalence of these parasites. Additionally, intestinal tissue samples ( n = 1,049) from specimens of 10

Brucella pinnipedialis in hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) primary epithelial cells.

BACKGROUND: Marine Brucella spp. have been isolated from numerous pinniped and cetacean species, but pathological findings in association with infection with Brucella pinnipedialis in pinnipeds have been sparse. The capacity of brucellae to survive and replicate within host macrophages underlies their important ability to produce chronic infections, but previous work has shown that B. pinnipedialis spp. are rapidly eliminated from hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) alveolar macrophages. RESULTS: To investigate if multiplication could take place in other hooded seal cell types, primary epitheli

Priapism: a review.

Priapism is persistent penile erection in the absence of sexual stimulation. The pattern of blood flow to the penis that occurs during normal erection is altered so that sustained priapism may result in edema, increased risk of abrasion, tissue drying and necrosis of the penis. Numerous causes have been reported in animals and humans. The prognosis depends on the type of priapism and the amount of time that passes before therapeutic intervention. Surgical methods, such as aspiration and shunting procedures, have traditionally been used to treat priapism but carry a risk of postsurgical complic

Isolation of Brucella species from cetaceans, seals and an otter.

Brucella organisms which differed from the recognised species of the genus, were isolated from nine seals, eight cetaceans and one otter. A method is described for the isolation of Brucella species from sea mammals and the first isolations of Brucella species are recorded from an Atlantic white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus), two striped dolphins (Stenella coeuleoalba), a hooded seal (Cystophora cristata), a grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) and a European otter (Lutra lutra). There were differences in the culture media required for the primary isolation of the organisms and in their depen

The carotid body of the harbour seal (Phoca vitulina richardsi).

The bilateral distribution of carotid body type 1 and 11 cells was investigated in five harbour seals (Phoca vitulina richardsi), by serially sectioning the carotid bifurcation regions. The cells occurred bilaterally in the animals and were also present in one specimen from a sixth animal available for study. The type 1 and 11 cells were located in the space between the internal and external carotid arteries and had a varied relationship to the occipital and condyloid arteries. They lay within a division of connective tissue with irregular but defineable borders and this combination of connect

Deep origins, distinct adaptations, and species-level status indicated for a glacial relict seal.

Isolated populations of postglacial relicts are known from many regions and are typically found on mountains for terrestrial species and in lakes for aquatic species. Among the few aquatic mammalian relicts, the Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis) has been landlocked in Lake Saimaa, Finland, for the last 10,000 y. Saimaa ringed seals show genetic, behavioral, and morphological differences from the other ringed seal subspecies, but the extent these differences stem from the end of the last glacial period remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate with comprehensive sampling and state-of-the-

Redescription and molecular analysis of Corynosoma pseudohamanni Zdzitowiecki, 1984 (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae) juveniles from Notothenia coriiceps Richardson in the water area of Argentine Islands, West Antarctica.

Corynosoma pseudohamanni Zdzitowiecki, 1984 (Polymorphidae) was described from the intestinal tract of 5 species of seals including the type and main host, the Weddell seal Leptonycotes weddellii (Lesson) in the South Shetlands, West Antarctica. Notothenia coriiceps was the primary paratenic host of 14 fish hosts reported in the original description. We describe excysted juveniles from the body cavity of the major paratenic host, Notothenia coriiceps Richardson collected off Galindez Island, Argentine Islands, West Antarctica for the first time. The original description was not "based on mater

Circadian coupling of mitochondria in a deep-diving mammal.

Regulation of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation is essential to match energy supply to changing cellular energy demands, and to cope with periods of hypoxia. Recent work implicates the circadian molecular clock in control of mitochondrial function and hypoxia sensing. Because diving mammals experience intermittent episodes of severe hypoxia, with diel patterning in dive depth and duration, it is interesting to consider circadian-mitochondrial interaction in this group. Here, we demonstrate that the hooded seal (Cystophora cristata), a deep-diving Arctic pinniped, shows strong daily patte

High prevalence and low intensity of Echinophthirius horridus infection in seals revealed by high effort sampling.

Seal lice (Echinophthirius horridus) are bloodsucking ectoparasites of phocid seals and vectors of pathogens like the heartworm, Acanthocheilonema spirocauda. Grey and harbour seal populations are recovering in German waters and wildlife health surveillance is crucial for wildlife conservation. A new, high effort sampling protocol for seal lice was applied for grey and harbour seals along the German North- and Baltic Sea coast. Freshly dead seals were systematically sampled within a health monitoring of stranded seals over 12 months. Prevalence, intensity and distribution patterns of seal lice

The deeper the rounder: body shape variation in lice parasitizing diving hosts.

Seal lice, unique among insects, show remarkable adaptability to the extreme conditions of the deep sea. Evolving with their seal and sea lion hosts, they have managed to tolerate hypoxia, high salinity, low temperature, and elevated hydrostatic pressure. Given the diving capabilities of their mammalian hosts, which can reach depths of hundreds to thousands of meters, our study examines the morphological variation among closely related seal lice species infesting hosts with different maximum diving depths. In particular, our research reveals a significant morphological difference between lice

Large sensory volumes enable Southern elephant seals to exploit sparse deep-sea prey.

The ability of echolocating toothed whales to detect and classify prey at long ranges enables efficient searching and stalking of sparse prey in these time-limited dives. However, nonecholocating deep-diving seals such as elephant seals appear to have much less sensory advantage over their prey. Both elephant seals and their prey rely on visual and hydrodynamic cues that may be detectable only at short ranges in the deep ocean, leading us to hypothesize that elephant seals must adopt a less efficient reactive mode of hunting that requires high prey densities. To test that hypothesis, we deploy

Hyperbaric tracheobronchial compression in cetaceans and pinnipeds.

Assessment of the compressibility of marine mammal airways at depth is crucial to understanding vital physiological processes such as gas exchange during diving. Very few studies have directly assessed changes in cetacean and pinniped tracheobronchial shape, and none have quantified changes in volume with increasing pressure. A harbor seal, gray seal, harp seal, harbor porpoise and common dolphin were imaged promptly post mortem via computed tomography in a radiolucent hyperbaric chamber. Volume reconstructions were performed of segments of the trachea and bronchi of the pinnipeds and bronchi

Acoustic measurements of post-dive cardiac responses in southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) during surfacing at sea.

Measuring physiological data in free-ranging marine mammals remains challenging, owing to their far-ranging foraging habitat. Yet, it is important to understand how these divers recover from effort expended underwater, as marine mammals can perform deep and recurrent dives. Among them, southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) are one of the most extreme divers, diving continuously at great depth and for long duration while travelling over large distances within the Southern Ocean. To determine how they manage post-dive recovery, we deployed hydrophones on four post-breeding female southern e

Investigations on course and outcome of phocine distemper virus infection in harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls. Virological and serological investigations.

The influence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) on phocine distemper virus (PDV) infections in harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) was studied. Six out of ten seals had been conditioned with a defined mixture of PCB-congeners for several weeks. Following exposure to the cell culture-propagated PDV isolate 2558/Han 88 the complete clinical picture of "1988 seal plague" was provoked in all ten seals inoculated. Four out of six PCB-conditioned seals and two out of four seals not loaded with PCBs succumbed to the infection within three weeks post inoculation. With regard to the clinical course, durat

Adaptations of seal louse nits to underwater life: morphology, respiration and attachment.

Marine mammals host a variety of parasites, engaged in continuous evolutionary competition. Our understanding of parasitic insects associated with these mammals, specifically their physiological adaptations to the marine environment, remains limited. Among thirteen insect species capable of enduring extended underwater periods in open oceans is the seal louse, Echinophthirius horridus, which infests true seals. This species relies on adaptations to survive extreme conditions such as hypoxia, temperature variations, hydrostatic pressure, and drag forces during host dives. These conditions affec
