Epidemiology of respiratory syncytial virus infection among infants over three winter seasons.

A study involving respiratory syncytial virus was carried out on infants and young children hospitalised with acute respiratory tract infection over the period December 1987 to March 1990. During peak periods of RS virus activity 420 naso-pharyngeal aspirates were submitted to the Virus Reference Laboratory, Department of Medical Microbiology, U.C.D., mostly from the Dublin region. Using immunofluorescence, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay and cell culture techniques 206 samples (49%) were identified as positive for RS virus. Over the period of study RS virus seasonal activity was confined to

Are all born equal? Incidence of febrile convulsions by seasons of birth.

To test whether the seasons of birth had an effect on subsequent experience of illness, details were obtained of all Sheffield children born between 1973 and 1977 who were admitted to hospital before their second birthday with a first febrile convulsion. Analysis by date of birth in consecutive 28-day cohorts showed that the incidence of febrile convulsions ranged from 2.5 per thousand live births to 30.2 per thousand in different "month" cohorts. Statistically significant variations were noted in the incidence rates in relation to season and year of birth. The implication is that even large s

Does seasonality of the microbiota contribute to the seasonality of acute gout flare?

Gout, the most common inflammatory arthritis worldwide, is an auto-inflammatory metabolic disease that leads to monosodium urate crystal deposition. Hyperuricaemia is a significant risk factor for the development of gout; however, hyperuricaemia alone is not sufficient to induce gout.Gout flares have circadian rhythms. Gout flares vary during the day and have strong seasonality, with flares being more common in the spring. The reasons for the predominance of flares in the spring are unclear since serum urate (SU) levels show seasonal variation; however, SU levels are highest in the summer.Immu

Seasonality and autoimmune diseases: The contribution of the four seasons to the mosaic of autoimmunity.

Autoimmune diseases (ADs) are a heterogeneous groups of diseases that occur as a results of loss of tolerance to self antigens. While the etiopathogeneis remain obscure, different environmental factors were suggested to have a role in the development of autoimmunity, including infections, low vitamin D levels, UV radiation, and melatonin. Interestingly, such factors possess seasonal variation patterns that could influence disease development, severity and progression. Vitamin D levels which reach a nadir during late winter and early spring is correlated with increased disease activity, clinica

Seasonal mood disorders. Patterns of seasonal recurrence in mania and depression.

DSM-III-R criteria, applied retrospectively in a research-oriented psychiatric clinic, identified patients (N = 146) with a mood disorder and a seasonal pattern of recurrence (seasonal mood disorder). The seasonal mood disorder syndrome was not rare (10% of all mood disorders); diagnostic distribution was as follows: recurrent depression, 51%, and bipolar disorder, 49%, with 30% of the latter having mania (bipolar disorder type I) and 19% having hypomania (bipolar disorder type II). Most patients were women (71%); onset age averaged 29 years, with a mean of eight cycles in 12 years of illness;

Seasonal mood symptoms in bulimia nervosa and seasonal affective disorder.

Mood and appetite disturbances are commonly found in bulimia nervosa and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). To investigate seasonality of mood symptoms, we administered the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ) to 38 consecutive bulimic patients, 38 age- and sex-matched SAD patients, and 25 age- and sex-matched normal controls. The SPAQ is a reliable, retrospective, self-rated questionnaire that assesses seasonal changes in mood, sleep, weight, and social activity. The SAD patients had significantly higher Global Seasonality Scores (GSS) than the bulimic patients, who had higher sco

The relation between seasonal birth variation and the season of the mother's birth.

Seasonal birth variation was investigated in relation to the season of the mother's birth by examining: (1) 21,517 case records of a maternity hospital in Tokyo, Japan, for the period between 1925 and 1960 and (2) 2,348 questionnaires on mothers and their offsprings. In general, the birth rate was the lowest in the May--July season but mothers born in May--July of 1896 through 1915 and February--April of 1916 through 1935 had their births more evenly distributed throughout the year. The less season-sensitive mothers were more fertile than the others. The existence of some epidemic and immunoge

Respiratory viral infections in children under five during two consecutive autumn-winter seasons.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory viral infections are a leading cause of hospitalization in children < 5 years. Understanding viral circulation, co-infections, and disease severity is essential for prevention and clinical management. METHODS: This retrospective, single-center observational study was conducted between September 2023 and April 2025, and was based on multiplex PCR viral panel results obtained from respiratory samples of children under 5 years of age referred to IRCCS Policlinico. Repeated respiratory samples from the same patient yielding identical results were considered a single episod

PBX1: a TALE of two seasons-key roles during development and in cancer.

Pre-B cell leukemia factor 1 (PBX1) is a Three Aminoacid Loop Extension (TALE) homeodomain-containing transcription factor playing crucial roles in organ pattering during embryogenesis, through the formation of nuclear complexes with other TALE class and/or homeobox proteins to regulate target genes. Its contribution to the development of several organs has been elucidated mainly through the study of murine knockout models. A crucial role for human development has been recently highlighted through the discovery of different de novo pathogenic PBX1 variants in children affected by developmental

[Characteristics,Sources, and Ozone-sensitive Species of VOCs in Four Seasons in Yuncheng].

Based on the one-year observational data of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in an urban area of Yuncheng in 2021, the concentration, composition, sources, and ozone-sensitive species of VOCs in four seasons were analyzed. The results showed that the average annual concentration of VOCs was (32.1 ±24.2)×10-9, i.e., at the national middle level. The seasonal concentrations of VOCs were in the order of: winter (46.3×10-9)> autumn (35.5×10-9)> spring (25.6×10-9)> summer (21.2×10-9). Alkanes and OVOCs were the most dominant VOCs compounds, accounting for 69.0%-80.4% of TVOCs in Yuncheng.

Infections and coinfections by respiratory human bocavirus during eight seasons in hospitalized children.

The human bocavirus (hBoV) has been identified in respiratory infections in children in a large number of studies. Despite this, the pathogenic role of the HBoV is under discussion. The main objectives of the study were: to determine the incidence of HBoV in hospitalized children; to describe the main clinical features of the positive children; and to compare the data with those from other viral infections in the same population. A prospective study was performed between 2005 and 2013 including children up to 14-year old with respiratory infection admitted to the Severo Ochoa Hospital (Spain).
