Immunoreactivity for Sox10 in Basaloid Neoplasms of The Skin.

Basaloid tumors of the skin pose a diagnostic challenge to pathologists, because the differential diagnosis is broad, sometimes with subtle differentiating features. We evaluated SOX10 expression in 120 primary cutaneous tumors with epidermal, sweat glandular, neuroendocrine/neuroectodermal, follicular, and sebaceous lineages. Our findings were compared with those of previous studies that evaluated SOX10 in tumors of the skin. SOX10 staining was seen in the majority of sweat gland tumors with the exception of syringoma and microcystic adnexal carcinoma. There were no immunoreactive cases among

YAP1::MAML2-Rearranged Poroid Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising in a Non-sebaceous Lymphadenoma of the Parotid Gland.

Salivary gland lymphadenoma is an uncommon neoplasm and malignant transformation is even rarer. Reported tumor types include basal cell adenocarcinoma, sebaceous carcinoma, EBV-associated lymphoepithelial carcinoma, and undifferentiated carcinoma; a squamous phenotype has not been reported. Here we describe the case of a 62-year-old female who underwent total parotidectomy for a painful parotid gland mass of uncertain duration. On microscopic examination, a high grade lymphoepithelial carcinoma with squamous and poroid features arising in a non-sebaceous lymphadenoma was recognized. Both benig

Oncocytic lipoadenoma of the parotid gland with sebaceous differentiation. Study of its keratin profile.

Oncocytic lipoadenomas of salivary gland are extremely rare tumors with only two previously reported cases. In this paper, we describe an additional example of oncocytic lipoadenoma showing sebaceous differentiation, a hitherto unreported occurrence. The tumor was encapsulated and measured 3 x 2.5 x 2 cm. Microscopically, the tumor comprised a mixture of oncocytes with "light" and "dark" cells intimately associated with mature adipose tissue. The oncocytes were positive for low molecular keratin, epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), and keratin 7, with only a small subgroup of cells expressing h

The Prognostic Significance of Programmed Death-Ligand 1 (PD-L1) in Skin Neoplasms: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background and AimsProgrammed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) is an immune checkpoint molecule with proven therapeutic and prognostic implications. However, its prognostic significance in skin neoplasms remains controversial. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of PD-L1 expression in skin neoplasms.MethodsWe systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases up to March 2025, to evaluate overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) as outcome measures. Subgroup analyses were performed based on tumor type. Heterogeneity and publication bias were assessed u

Cytomorphology of sebaceous carcinoma of the eyelid: A short series of three cases with literature review.

BACKGROUND: Ocular sebaceous carcinoma (OSC) is a malignant and potentially lethal sebaceous gland tumor. Clinically, it masquerades as other benign and less malignant lesions, resulting in a delay in diagnosis. METHODS: In the present study, we sought to evaluate the cytomorphology of this aggressive neoplasm diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) last year at our institute. RESULTS/FINDINGS: We report three cases of OSC diagnosed on aspiration cytology showed a cellular smear composed of sheets, 3D clusters, papillaroid, and singly scattered polygonal tumor cells having centra

Sebaceous adenocarcinoma of meibomian gland origin with targetoid intra-nuclear inclusions.

Neoplastic proliferation of the meibomian glands is most often characterized by a tarsal tumor of the eyelid conjunctiva, having the clinical appearance of a chalazion. As such, the tumor is frequently not recognized as a neoplasm and is treated conservatively as an inflammatory lesion. A protracted clinical course combined with repeated surgical excisions typify this slow-growing tumor of sebaceous gland cells. In addition to the usual features of polygonal cell shape, abundant cytoplasm, and numerous fat vacuoles, we describe the presence of a peculiar nuclear inclusion seen only in the pare

Perineal papilliferous syringocystadenoma: An unusual localization.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Syringocystadenoma papiliferum (SCAP) is an infrequent, benign neoplasm originating from the apocrine or, less frequently, eccrine sweat glands. This condition predominantly manifests in regions such as the head, face, neck, and trunk. Notably, it is frequently associated with hamartomas of endocrine, sebaceous, or follicular origin, as well as with sebaceous nevi. CASE PRESENTATION: In the context of this study, we present a clinical case involving a 65-year-old patient who exhibited an atypical anatomical presentation of syringocystadenoma papiliferum. Extra-Ocular Sebaceous Carcinoma in Situ of the Arm of an Elder Male: An Unusual Presentation in an Atypical Location.

Background. Sebaceous carcinoma in situ outside the ocular region is an exceedingly uncommon. It is an intraepidermal neoplasm originating from sebaceous glands limited to the epidermis with no invasion into the underlying dermis or beyond. Although sebaceous carcinoma in situ is predominantly observed in ocular regions, particularly the eyelids, instances of its occurrence in extraocular locations are infrequent, with only a limited number of examples reported in the literature. Case Presentation. A 63-year-old man presented with a left posterior arm lesion. Microscopic examination revealed a

Skin Adnexal Tumors in Plain Language: A Practical Approach for the General Surgical Pathologist.

CONTEXT.—: Skin adnexal tumors, those neoplasms deriving from hair follicles and sweat glands, are often a source of confusion amongst even experienced pathologists. Many well-described entities have overlapping features, tumors are often only partially sampled, and many cases do not fit neatly into well-established classification schemes. OBJECTIVES.—: To simplify categorization of adnexal tumors for the general surgical pathologist and to shed light on many of the diagnostic dilemmas commonly encountered in daily practice. The following review breaks adnexal neoplasms into 3 groups: sebaceo

Cystic lesions in the salivary gland. Pitfalls to be avoided on cytology.

Cystic lesions of the salivary glands are very uncommon entities. However, on occasion, some neoplasms of the salivary glands show a cystic component, which may be predominant or only partially cystic. Basal cell adenoma, canalicular adenoma, oncocytoma, sebaceous adenoma, intraductal papilloma, epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma, intraductal carcinoma, and secretory carcinoma are such cystic entities. Cystic degeneration and necrosis, which can develop within solid tumours, represent another possibility. The ability to recognise this type of lesion is a challenge in diagnostic cytology becaus

Muir-Torre syndrome.

The Muir-Torre syndrome is an autosomal dominantly inherited genodermatosis with malignant potential that is characterized by the presence of at least one sebaceous gland tumor (adenoma, epithelioma, or carcinoma) and a minimum of one internal malignancy. The syndrome has been documented in 147 individuals. Associated features in some of the Muir-Torre syndrome patients are colorectal carcinomas and genitourinary neoplasms. More than half of the 292 visceral cancers described in Muir-Torre syndrome patients were colorectal carcinomas; nearly 60% of these tumors were located at or proximal to t

Cytomorphology and diagnostic pitfalls of sebaceous and nonsebaceous salivary gland lymphadenoma: A multi-institutional study.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland lymphadenoma (LAD) is a rare benign neoplasm comprising sebaceous (SLAD) and nonsebaceous (NSLAD) types. Despite established histologic criteria, limited data on cytomorphology, tumor heterogeneity, and overlap with other entities make the diagnosis of LAD by fine needle aspiration (FNA) challenging. We describe a multi-institutional cohort of 14 LADs with cytology, clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic data. METHODS: Our cohort included nine SLAD and five NSLAD with corresponding histopathology. Mean patient age and M:F ratio were 60.4 years (range 45-86 years)

Ocular Sebaceous Carcinoma In Situ With Biphenotypic Differentiation: A Reappraisal of the Alternative Origin of the Tumor.

Ocular sebaceous carcinoma is an uncommon, aggressive tumor arising from the Meibomian gland, Zeis gland, or sebaceous glands in the caruncle or eyelashes. We described a rare case of sebaceous carcinoma in situ in a 51-year-old female that was characterized by intraepithelial growth of sebaceous carcinoma cells with no invasive carcinoma in the underlying sebaceous glands. Early stromal invasion was identified that featured 2 distinctive but focally intermixed populations of sebaceous carcinoma cells and squamous carcinoma cells. The 2 populations of cells exhibited their respective distinct

Basal Cell Carcinoma of Vermilion Mucosa of Upper Lip: a Rare Case Report.

Although basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a common skin tumor, very rare cases of BCC arising from upper vermilion mucosa of lip have been reported previously. This tumor basically, originates from pillar structures and the involvement of the vermilion lip contrasts this concept so it is devoid of hair follicles and sweat glands. The exact pathogenesis of vermilion lip BCC is not clear but it has been postulated that the neoplasm originates from the pluripotential epithelial cells of the oral mucosa and epidermis. On the other hand, some authors consider their origin from ectopic sebaceous glands

Rare Malignant Tumors of the Eyelid: A Comprehensive Clinicopathologic, Molecular, and Management Review of Adnexal and Neuroendocrine Neoplasms.

Although basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma represent the most frequent malignant tumors of the eyelids, a diverse group of rarer adnexal and neuroendocrine neoplasms also demonstrates a strong predilection for this anatomic site. These tumors, including sebaceous carcinoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, primary cutaneous mucinous carcinoma, endocrine-mucin-producing eccrine gland carcinoma (EMPSGC), primary apocrine adenocarcinoma, and primary signet ring (histiocytoid) carcinoma, are characterized by unique epidemiologic patterns, biologic behavior, and histopathologic feat

Sebaceous Carcinoma: Clinicopathologic Analysis of 29 Cases in a Tertiary Hospital in Korea.

Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a neoplasm derived from the adnexal epithelium of the sebaceous glands, and most studies on this neoplasm have been conducted in Caucasians. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 29 patients with SC (16 extraocular and 13 ocular lesions) who were diagnosed from 2001 to 2014 to analyze the clinical and histopathological features of SC in the Korean population. Sixteen of the patients were women and 13 were men. There was an equal sex distribution for extraocular lesions, and a female predilection (M:F = 1:1.6) for ocular lesions. The mean ages at presentation of
