Regulation of lipid production by acetylcholine signalling in human sebaceous glands.

BACKGROUND: The extraneuronal cholinergic system has been implicated in numerous functions in the skin, such as terminal differentiation, barrier formation, sweat secretion and the microcirculation. However, the evidence for cholinergic signalling in sebaceous glands is lacking, and its role needs to be clarified. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the role of acetylcholine signalling in sebaceous glands using human sebocytes and a clinical study using botulinum toxin. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry and immunocytofluorescence were performed to evaluate cholinergic receptor levels in sebaceous glands.

Elevated levels of the endogenous retrovirus ERV3 in human sebaceous glands.

ERV3 (HERV-R) is a complete human endogenous retrovirus located on the long arm of chromosome 7. Long terminal repeat-envelope (env) gene spliced mRNAs of 9 and 3.5 kb are widely expressed in human tissues and cells, but gag-pol mRNAs have not been found. Furthermore, the env gp70 gene contains an open reading frame throughout its length. The highest expression of ERV3 mRNA detected so far is in placenta and the lowest in choriocarcinoma cell lines. We have previously shown that the human monoblastic cell line U-937 and some normal and neoplastic tissues also express high levels of ERV3 env me

TROP2 Expression in Sebaceous and Sweat Gland Carcinoma.

Sebaceous carcinoma and sweat gland carcinoma (malignant tumors with apocrine and eccrine differentiation) are rare malignant skin adnexal tumors that differentiate toward sebaceous gland and eccrine and apocrine glands, respectively. Owing to the rarity of these carcinomas, standard treatments for advanced disease have not been established. Because the prognosis of patients with systemic metastasis is poor, a new treatment for these diseases is eagerly desired. Trophoblast cell surface antigen 2 (TROP2) and sacituzumab govitecan, an antibody-drug conjugate of TROP2, have attracted attention i

Sebaceous lymphadenocarcinoma of the parotid gland: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a benign tumor that occurs rarely in the salivary glands, most commonly in the parotid glands or periparotid lymph nodes, and even more rarely undergoes malignant transformation into a sebaceous lymphadenocarcinoma. CASE SUMMARY: We report an 82-year-old woman who presented with a painless mass in the right parotid region. We performed extended surgical resection of the parotid gland mass. Intraoperative pathology revealed a sebaceous lymphadenocarcinoma with metastasis into the periparotid cervical lymph nodes, so we also performed neck dissection and ly

Treatment of sebaceous gland hyperplasia: a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous gland hyperplasia (SGH) is a benign cutaneous proliferation of the sebaceous glands that primarily affects the elderly group and frequently appears in individuals receiving long-term ciclosporin therapy such as organ transplant recipients. In the latter group, SGHs are usually multiple in number and occur predominantly on the face. Patients may find their appearance cosmetically undesirable and, in some cases, may result in significant negative psychological impact. There is, therefore, a demand for safe and effective treatment for SGH particularly in this patient group.

Topics in histopathology of sweat gland and sebaceous neoplasms.

This article reviews several topics regarding sweat gland and sebaceous neoplasms. First, the clinicopathological characteristics of poroid neoplasms are summarized. It was recently reported that one-fourth of poroid neoplasms are composite tumors and one-fourth are apocrine type lesions. Recent progress in the immunohistochemical diagnosis of sweat gland neoplasms is also reviewed. CD117 can help to distinguish sweat gland or sebaceous tumors from other non-Merkel cell epithelial tumors of the skin. For immunohistochemical differential diagnosis between sweat gland carcinoma (SGC) other than

Sebaceous Gland Carcinoma of Eyelid- A Tarnished Masquerade.

Malignant tumours of the face are usually seen in the periocular region, mainly on eyelids most commonly in the inferior eyelid, medial canthus and superior eyelid, respectively. The prime treatment for eyelid malignant tumours is the total excision of the lesion with frozen section control or by Mohs Micrographic surgery. The postoperative defects should be reconstructed judicially taking care that the near normal anatomical and functional recovery is achieved. The Cutler-Beard flap procedure, a good alternative in the reconstruction of superior near-total eyelid defects resulted in good rest

Sebaceous carcinoma of the parotid gland: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary sebaceous carcinoma of the parotid gland is extremely rare, and because of its rarity, clinicopathological characteristics and histogenesis are not fully understood. METHODS: Here, we report a patient who presented with a left infra-auricular painless mass. We present the histological features and discuss possible optimal treatments based on previous literature. RESULTS: The mass was suspected to be a myoepithelial tumor or possibly a pleomorphic adenoma. Initially, the mass was resected with preservation of the facial nerve, but this caused facial palsy. Because the hist

Endogenous retinoids in the hair follicle and sebaceous gland.

Vitamin A and its derivatives (retinoids) are critically important in the development and maintenance of multiple epithelial tissues, including skin, hair, and sebaceous glands, as shown by the detrimental effects of either vitamin A deficiency or toxicity. Thus, precise levels of retinoic acid (RA, active metabolite) are needed. These precise levels of RA are achieved by regulating several steps in the conversion of dietary vitamin A (retinol) to RA and RA catabolism. This review discusses the localization of RA synthesis to specific sites within the hair follicle and sebaceous gland, includi

Sebaceous adenoma of the submandibular gland: a case report.

Sebaceous adenoma of the salivary gland is a rare tumor comprising 0.1% of all salivary gland neoplasms and less than 0.5% of salivary adenomas. Histologically, sebaceous adenomas are benign neoplasms consisting of sebaceous cells arranged in nests forming acinar and duct-like structures. Oncocytic metaplasia may also occur in some areas. We describe a case of sebaceous adenoma in the submandibular gland. Under a presumptive diagnosis of sialadenitis/sialolithiasis, the patient was administered multiple courses of antibiotics; however, these were not effective. Excisional biopsy resulted in a

Sebaceous gland hyperplasia of the vulva: a case report.

A unique case of sebaceous gland hyperplasia presenting as polypoid lesions on the vulva of a 32-year-old white woman is reported. Sebaceous hyperplasia is a benign condition most frequently seen on the forehead of elderly patients. The reported case presented with three soft, nontender polypoid lesions located on mons veneris and right labium majus. Histological examination showed hyperplastic sebaceous lobules not associated with hair follicles. The extremely rare site of the lesion, the clinical and histopathological differential diagnosis, and a therapeutical approach are discussed.

Sebaceous gland carcinoma. Review of 40 cases.

The clinical and histopathologic features of 40 cases of sebaceous gland carcinoma include tumors that appeared as a localized lesion (15), diffuse chronic blepharoconjunctivitis (12), recurrent chalazion (eight), and caruncular tumors (two). In three older cases, specimens were submitted with insufficient clinical information. Chronic blepharoconjunctivitis were associated with "pagetoid" involvement of the conjunctive and lid margin. Despite the characteristic pathologic features of sebaceous gland carcinoma, correct diagnosis was given for only 22.5% of tumors on initial pathologic examinat

Epigenetic Regulation of Sebaceous and Meibomian Glands: From Development to Disease.

Sebaceous glands (SGs) and their specialized subtype, Meibomian glands (MGs), play essential roles in skin and ocular surface homeostasis by producing lipids that maintain barrier integrity and stabilize the tear film. Dysregulation of SG and MG biology contributes to a spectrum of disorders, ranging from benign hyperplasia to sebaceous carcinoma and age-related MG dysfunction. Accumulating evidence highlights the importance of epigenetic regulation, including histone modifications, DNA methylation, and non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), in controlling SG and MG development, homeostasis, and disease su

An updated review of the sebaceous gland and its role in health and diseases Part 1: Embryology, evolution, structure, and function of sebaceous glands.

Sebaceous glands are sebum-secreting components of pilosebaceous units. The embryological development of the sebaceous gland follows that of the hair follicle and epidermal tissue, beginning between weeks 13 and 16 of fetal development. New sebaceous glands do not normally develop following birth, but their size increases with age. Sebocytes express a multitude of hormone receptors and are heavily regulated to secrete sebum by androgens. There is a large increase of sebum excretion at birth and again at puberty, until approximately age 17. In adulthood, sebum production remains stable and decl

Age-related downregulation of dihydrotestosterone-inactivating enzymes in human scalp sebaceous glands.

BACKGROUND: Aging alters the systemic steroid environment, including reductions in circulating androgens. In peripheral tissues, androgen exposure is regulated mainly by local steroid metabolism, which can activate or inactivate androgens independently of systemic concentrations. In the scalp, 5α-reductase-mediated generation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) has been studied extensively in relation to conditions such as androgenetic alopecia. In contrast, age-related regulation of DHT-inactivating pathways, including the aldo-keto reductase family 1 member C (AKR1C) family, remains insufficiently
