INTRODUCTION: Loot boxes are purchasable randomised reward mechanisms in video games. Due to structural and psychological similarities with gambling, there are fears that loot box purchasing may be associated with problematic gambling. Whilst monthly expenditure is typically modest (i.e. < $20), the distribution is highly skewed, with a small number of high-level spenders, sometimes referred to as "whales". It is not known what proportion of industry profits are derived from such players, and whether they are typically wealthy individuals and/or problem gamblers.

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries is the most common reason for hospital admissions for children aged 6-10 years in England. The prevalence in the experience of hospital admission is not uniform across all populations. This paper reports on the analysis of secondary data on dental hospital episodes for children residing in London, and its association with oral health inequalities.
DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective, non-identifiable patient data sourced from the Hospital Episode Statistics dataset was analysed. Finished consultant episodes (FCEs) were extracted for children aged 1-19 yea

BACKGROUND: There is increasing recognition that individuals of all ages with life-limiting conditions benefit from palliative care. Despite a preference for dying at home, most patients still spend their final days in hospital. The WHO encourages member states to integrate palliative care across all levels of their health system.
AIM: This study aims to explore how home care services in a Norwegian municipality implement practices that enable patients to die at home, and how healthcare professionals experience these practices.
METHODS: A secondary analysis was conducted using qualitative da

This study uses data from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS) and the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) to examine the incidence of maltreatment among children in out-of-home care (OOHC), the nature of that maltreatment (neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, or emotional maltreatment), the source of maltreatment reports, and the relationship between maltreatment in OOHC and child characteristics (i.e., age, gender, race, ethnicity, and disability). We found that 6.5% of children in OOHC in a given reporting year were the subject of a child m

Remission, relapse prevention, and clinical recovery are crucial areas of interest in schizophrenia (SCZ) research. Although SCZ is a chronic disorder with poor overall outcomes, years of research demonstrated that recovery is possible. There are considerable data linking brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) to SCZ, however, evidence on the role of BDNF in remission in SCZ is scarce. This secondary analysis of the Longitudinal Assessment of BDNF in Sardinian patients (LABSP) data aimed to investigate the relationship between serum BDNF levels and symptomatic remission, simultaneous clinica

BACKGROUND: A key pillar of Canada's healthcare system is universal access, yet significant barriers to cancer services remain for people impacted by structural vulnerability (e.g., poverty, homelessness, racism). For this reason, cancer is diagnosed at a later stage, resulting in worse patient outcomes, a reduced quality of life, and at a higher cost to the healthcare system. Those who face significant barriers to access are under-represented in cancer control services Consequently, these inequities result in people dying from cancers that are highly treatable and preventable, however; little

Stillbirth is a major public health problem across the world as well as in India. The programmatic interventions to tackle stillbirth require granular data upto local levels. The Health Management Information System (HMIS) in India is one of the best sources of granular data on stillbirth. This analysis was conducted using HMIS stillbirth data of three pre-pandemic years 2017-2020 to study the geo-spatial patterns of stillbirth at district level in nine states of India, forming a high burden cluster of four central Indian states and a low burden cluster of five southern states. Geo-spatial var

BACKGROUND: Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine's immunomodulatory properties can protect against respiratory infections due to its nonspecific trained immunity of innate immune cells. The objective of the study is to assess the effectiveness of BCG in reducing incidence and morality of ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODOLOGY: The present study is a secondary data analysis to compare the incidence and mortality of COVID 19 among countries who had BCG vaccine in their national immunisation schedule with other group of countries who did not have. Twenty-six countries with BCG vaccinations and

BACKGROUND: When people with health conditions begin to manage their health issues, one important issue that emerges is the question as to what exactly do they do with the information that they have obtained through various sources (eg, news media, social media, health professionals, friends, and family). The information they gather helps form their opinions and, to some degree, influences their attitudes toward managing their condition.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to understand how tinnitus is represented in the US newspaper media and in Facebook pages (ie, social media) using text pattern a

Analysis of existing health data is often used as a cost-effective and time-efficient means to provide evidence to inform important public health decisions. However, the accuracy of the resultant decisions largely depends on the quality of the accessible data, and how the data are processed, analyzed, interpreted and reported. This case study, based on an actual secondary data analysis that was conducted by a trainee of the South African Field Epidemiology Training Programme during April 2017, was designed to provide a classroom simulation of practical considerations that should be taken into

OBJECTIVE: To calculate the proportion of cancer cases in the Netherlands in 2010 that were attributable to lifestyle factors by using the most recent data.
DESIGN: Secondary analysis.
METHOD: Lifestyle risk factors studied were tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, overweight, lack of physical exercise, and six elements of diet (consumption of vegetables, fruit, processed meat and red meat, and calcium and fibre intake). The lifestyle factors were organised so that the group with the highest risk (e.g. smokers) could be compared with the groups with the lowest risk (e.g. ex-smokers, non-smo

RATIONALE: Factors and outcomes associated with end-of-life decision-making among patients during clinical trials in the intensive care unit are unclear.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine patterns and outcomes of Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) decisions among critically ill patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) enrolled in a clinical trial.
METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of data from the ARDS Network Fluid and Catheter Treatment Trial (FACTT), collected between 2000 and 2005. We calculated mortality outcomes stratified by code status, and compared baseline character

BACKGROUND: Drug therapy for people with AIDS is a humanitarian priority but prevention of HIV infection remains essential. Focusing on young single African women, we aimed to assess trends in a set of behaviours-sexual abstinence, contraceptive use, and condom use-that are known to affect the rates of HIV transmission.
METHODS: We did a secondary analysis of public-access data sets in 18 African countries (132,800 women), and calculated changes in a set of behavioural indicators over time. We standardised these trends from nationally representative surveys to adjust for within-country change
