Phytotoxic Effects of Ethanolic Extracts of Magonia pubescens A.St.-Hil. (Sapindaceae) on the Germination of Emilia sonchifolia (L.) DC. Seeds.

Emilia sonchifolia (L.) DC. is a weed characterized by seed production and efficient wind dispersal. This study evaluated the allelopathic potential of extracts from the leaves, stem bark, and fruit pericarp (EECFMp) of Magonia pubescens on E. sonchifolia seed germination. HPLC-DAD analysis identified caffeic acid in all extracts, while p-coumaric and ferulic acids were detected in the stem bark and fruit pericarp extracts. The extracts exhibited concentration-dependent activity. The leaf extract was the most phytotoxic, reducing germination to 33% at the highest concentration and outperformin

High outcrossing rates in a self-compatible and highly aggregated host-generalist mistletoe.

Plants have evolved various strategies to avoid inbreeding, but the mass flowering displayed by many plants predisposes them to within-plant pollen movements and self-pollination. Mistletoes often aggregate at multiple spatial scales. Their bird pollinators often visit several flowers of the same individual and of others on the same host tree. We hypothesized that hermaphroditic mistletoes have self-incompatibility mechanisms that reduce or prevent selfing. Whether their spatial distribution, affected by host specificity, host distribution, and the behaviour of seed dispersers, influences thei

Can granivorous birds disperse stick and leaf insect eggs? Integrating in vivo digestion trials and in vitro functional experiments.

Spatial distribution plays a crucial role in speciation, affecting genetic divergence and reproductive isolation. Phasmatodea (stick and leaf insects) have limited adult mobility and may use their seed-like eggs for passive dispersal. The possibility of egg dispersal through birds is controversially discussed in current literature. Previous studies suggest that ornithochory of phasmid eggs is context-dependent and most eggs do not survive digestion by granivorous birds, while eggs consumed by insectivorous birds can potentially survive and hatch, presumably also when a gravid female is consume

Unconscious selection drove seed enlargement in vegetable crops.

Domesticated grain crops evolved from wild plants under human cultivation, losing natural dispersal mechanisms to become dependent upon humans, and showing changes in a suite of other traits, including increasing seed size. There is tendency for seed enlargement during domestication to be viewed as the result of deliberate selection for large seeds by early farmers. However, like some other domestication traits, large seeds may have evolved through natural selection from the activities of people as they gathered plants from the wild, or brought them into cultivation in anthropogenic settings.

Effects of insect infestation on rodent-mediated dispersal of Quercus aliena: results from field and enclosure experiments.

Rodents influence plant establishment and regeneration by functioning as both seed predators and dispersers. However, these rodent-plant interactions can vary significantly due to various environmental conditions and the activity of other insect seed predators. Here, we use a combination of both field and enclosure (i.e. individual cage and semi-natural enclosure) experiments, to determine whether rodents can distinguish sound seeds from those infested with insects. We also demonstrate how such responses to insects are influenced by food abundance and other environmental factors. We presented

Larvicidal potential of Trigonella foenum-graecum and Vitis vinifera seed oil nanoemulsions against Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae).

The increasing resistance of mosquito vectors to conventional insecticides highlights the urgent need for alternative and sustainable control strategies. Although plant-derived oils are selected due to their high content of bioactive compounds, especially unsaturated fatty acids and phenolic constituents, which have been reported to exhibit promising larvicidal activity and membrane-disrupting properties, their practical application is often limited by poor aqueous dispersibility, low physicochemical stability, and variable bioavailability. In addition, studies linking chemical composition to

Genetic consequences of being a dwarf: do evolutionary changes in life-history traits influence gene flow patterns in populations of the world's smallest goldenrod?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Contrasting life-history traits can evolve through generations of dwarf plant ecotypes, yet such phenotypic changes often involve decreased plant size and reproductive allocation, which can configure seed dispersal patterns and, subsequently, population demography. Therefore, evolutionary transitions to dwarfism can represent good study systems to test the roles of life-history traits in population demography by comparing genetic structure between related but phenotypically divergent ecotypes. METHODS: In this study, we examined an ecotypic taxon pair of the world's small

Genetic variation in the invasive weed Mikania micrantha (Asteraceae) suggests highways as corridors for its dispersal in southern China.

Background and aimsRoads as corridors of seed or fruit spatial dispersal have major impacts on the establishment and spread of invasive species, but their precise role in population genetic variation remains poorly understood. The South American weed Mikania micrantha has spread rapidly across southern China since its introduction to the Shenzhen area in 1984. This study investigated how its genetic diversity is distributed along highways, and whether highways have acted as corridors for the rapid expansion of M. micrantha METHODS: Twenty-seven roadside populations were sampled along four high

Bottom-up multitrophic effects in resprouting plants.

Severe damage often provokes compensatory resprouting of plants, which commonly modify plant morphological and phenological traits. Rapid plant growth often results in poorly defended nutrient-rich foliage, which is more susceptible to foliar-chewing herbivores. It is less known how other guilds of arthropods are affected by plant regrowth. We tested the hypotheses that clipping-induced resprouting and nutrient availability, separately and in combination, would (1) influence plant traits, (2) benefit chewing herbivores, sap-suckers, gallers, and pre-dispersal seed predators, and (3) cascade up

When sporangia became seeds: The innovation that rewrote land plant evolution.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The origin of the seed represents one of the most transformative evolutionary innovations in land plants, underpinning the ecological success of spermatophytes and fundamentally reshaping terrestrial ecosystems. Rather than arising as a discrete novelty, the seed evolved through a long sequence of reproductive transformations that progressively reorganized the plant life cycle. This review aims to synthesize the evolutionary steps leading from free-sporing vascular plants to the seed habit, emphasizing their functional and developmental integration. SCOPE: We synthesize p

Molecular genetic approaches to the study of primate behavior, social organization, and reproduction.

In the past several decades, the development of novel molecular techniques and the advent of noninvasive DNA sampling, coupled with the ease and speed with which molecular analyses can now be performed, have made it possible for primatologists to directly examine the fitness effects of individual behavior and to explore how variation in behavior and social systems influences primate population genetic structure. This review describes the theoretical connections between individual behavior and primate social systems on the one hand and population genetic structure on the other, discusses the ki

Landscape determinants of fine-scale genetic structure of a small rodent in a heterogeneous landscape (Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, South Africa).

Small mammals provide ecosystem services, acting, for example, as pollinators and seed dispersers. In addition, they are also disease reservoirs that can be detrimental to human health and they can also act as crop pests. Knowledge of their dispersal preferences is therefore useful for population management and landscape planning. Genetic data were used alongside landscape data to examine the influence of the landscape on the demographic connectedness of the Natal multimammate mouse (Mastomys natalensis) and to identify landscape characteristics that influence the genetic structure of this spe

Intraocular seeds in retinoblastoma: A review of classification, management, and outcomes.

Intraocular seeds in retinoblastoma are formed from dispersion of the tumor into the adjacent liquid or semiliquid compartments. They are highly resistant to traditional treatment modalities and remain the most important cause of treatment failure. Intraocular seeds can be focal or diffuse in the vitreous, retrohyaloid, subretinal or aqueous compartments. Intravitreal and intracameral chemotherapy with melphalan and/or topotecan have allowed targeted drug delivery in desired concentration to achieve improved outcomes of seed regression and globe salvage. Group E disease, diffuse and recurrent

Seed shadow, seedling recruitment, and spatial distribution of Buchenavia capitata (Combretaceae) in a fragment of the Brazilian Atlantic forest.

Here we describe the seed shadow, seedling recruitment, ontogenetic structure and spatial distribution of Buchenavia capitata (an emergent canopy tree) in a 380-ha fragment of the Atlantic forest in northeast Brazil. In particular, we examine seed distribution around 10 parental trees and both seedling recruitment and mortality, during an 18 month period beneath and around parental trees. Moreover, we describe: (1) B. capitata occurrence within treefall gaps; (2) population structure in terms of ontogenetic stages for the whole site; and (3) spatial distribution of adults within an area of 51

Oviposition strategies of conifer seed chalcids in relation to host phenology.

Insects are considered the most important predators of seed cones, the female reproductive structures of conifers, prior to seed dispersal. Slightly more than 100 genera of insects are known to parasitize conifer seed cones. The most diverse (i.e., number of species) of these genera is Megastigmus (Hymenoptera: Torymidae), which comprises many important seed pests of native and exotic conifers. Seed chalcids, Megastigmus spp., lay eggs inside the developing ovules of host conifers and, until recently, oviposition was believed to occur only in fertilized ovules. Ovule development begins just af

Seed shattering habit in millets and the secrets of the abscission layer - a comprehensive review.

Though seed shattering continues to be a significant barrier affecting yield stability and harvesting efficiency in millets and other grasses, millets are increasingly acknowledged as climate-resilient, nutrient-rich 2007cereal crops with the potential to strengthen global nutritional and food security under the combined pressures of climate change, population growth, and limited natural resources. Since strong artificial selection favoured non-shattering phenotypes during domestication, seed shattering, an adaptive trait in wild species that promotes seed dispersal through the formation and a

Trait-based inference of fragmentation-driven extinction risk.

Habitat fragmentation is a leading cause of plant extinctions, yet predicting which species are most vulnerable remains a key challenge. We propose that population connectivity, and thus gene flow via pollination and seed dispersal, can be inferred from plant traits. We integrate these traits into a connectivity-trait dimension, which, together with breeding system, life-history traits, and landscape context, ranks species at risk of genetic erosion and local extinction, providing an early-warning triage tool. By linking traits to gene flow mechanisms, the framework helps prioritise investment

How do abiotic stresses influence the seed germination and vigor of tree species from the Pampa biome?

The Pampa biome is increasingly threatened by anthropogenic pressure and climate change, which intensify thermal extremes, water scarcity, and soil salinity, negatively affecting seed production and dispersal. This study evaluated the effects of thermal, water, and salinity stresses on the germination and vigor of Neltuma affinis and Vachellia caven, two ecologically and economically important Fabaceae species native to the Pampa parklands. The seeds were subjected to different temperatures (15, 25, 30, and 35 °C), polyethylene glycol (PEG) concentrations (0.0, -0.41, -0.58, and -0.79 MPa), an

Dispersal of influenza virus populations within the respiratory tract shapes their evolutionary potential.

Viral infections are characterized by dispersal from an initial site to secondary locations within the host. How the resultant spatial heterogeneity shapes within-host genetic diversity and viral evolutionary pathways is poorly understood. Here, we show that virus dispersal within and between the nasal cavity and trachea maintains diversity and is therefore conducive to adaptive evolution, whereas dispersal to the lungs gives rise to population heterogeneity. We infected ferrets either intranasally or by aerosol with a barcoded influenza A/California/07/2009 (H1N1) virus. At 1, 2, or 4 days po

Molecular basis for species-specific sensitivity to "hot" chili peppers.

Chili peppers produce the pungent vanilloid compound capsaicin, which offers protection from predatory mammals. Birds are indifferent to the pain-producing effects of capsaicin and therefore serve as vectors for seed dispersal. Here, we determine the molecular basis for this species-specific behavioral response by identifying a domain of the rat vanilloid receptor that confers sensitivity to capsaicin to the normally insensitive chicken ortholog. Like its mammalian counterpart, the chicken receptor is activated by heat or protons, consistent with the fact that both mammals and birds detect nox
