Size breeds success: multiple paternity, multivariate selection and male semelparity in a small marsupial, Antechinus stuartii.

Mating in the marsupial genus Antechinus is a synchronous annual event that is characterized by monoestry in females and abrupt postmating mortality in males. Male semelparity (multiple copulations during a single breeding season per lifetime) is often assumed to occur as a consequence of the intense mating effort expended by males in the rut, but the forces selecting for this remain elusive. Here, we investigate selection in male brown antechinus, Antechinus stuartii, and test two hypotheses for the evolution of semelparity: intermale competition and sperm competition. If intermale competitio

Antioxidative enzymes as markers for the selection of advanced sweet potato breeding lines under in vitro osmotic stress conditions.

Five advanced breeding lines of sweet potato were assessed for polyethylene glycol (PEG)-6000-mediated osmotic stress tolerance in vitro. Significant variation among the morphophysiological properties and antioxidative enzyme activities was observed under different levels of PEG (0, 0.1, and 0.2 MPa) incorporated in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium. An induction of antioxidative enzymes-superoxide dismutase (SOD, Enzyme Commission [EC] 1.15.1.1), catalase (CAT, EC 1.11.1.6), ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.1), guaiacol peroxidase (GPX, EC 1.11.1.7), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR, E

Yield stability of selected rice breeding lines and donors across conditions of mild to moderately severe drought stress.

Although mild to moderately severe drought stress may have less of an effect on rice grain yield than severe drought stress during reproductive stage, its prevalence across rice farmers' fields at the global level may be more economically significant. In this study, field experiments were conducted on selected genotypes with known tolerance to severe reproductive-stage drought in order to identify those that would produce high and stable grain yield across seasons and soil moisture conditions varying from well-watered to mild and moderately severe drought stress. Mild stress generally occurred

Genomic Selection Integrated with High-Throughput Phenotyping and Speed Breeding for Smart and Greener Rice (Oryza sativa) Improvement.

Background: Rice breeding requires faster development of high-yielding, climate-resilient, resource-efficient, and high-quality cultivars for production systems exposed to environmental variability and increasing input constraints. Genomic selection offers an opportunity to predict breeding value before extensive field evaluation, although its effectiveness depends on the integration of genomic, phenotypic, and environmental information. Methods: This narrative review critically examines recent advances in genomic selection for rice and its integration with high-throughput genotyping, high-thr

TOPlus: An algorithm integrating prior genetic and environmental information for multi-trait synergic selection in maize hybrid breeding.

In maize hybrid breeding, synergic multi-trait selection of elite hybrids in specific target environments remains a major challenge. Enviromic data and functional gene knowledge are rapidly increasing; however, they have not been effectively integrated into crop breeding decisions. Here, we present TOPlus, a multi-trait hybrid prioritization framework comprising predictive and selective modules. The predictive module uses environmental information to improve phenotype prediction for untested genotypes and environments, whereas the selective module incorporates functional gene priors and multip

Transgressive Segregation, Reciprocal Effects and Multi-Trait Selection in an F2 Bread Wheat Diallel Under Speed Breeding.

Speed breeding accelerates wheat line development, yet most reports address protocol optimisation rather than how genetic variation is expressed within the segregating populations grown in the chamber. Because a controlled long-day chamber imposes a uniform, low-stress environment, it minimises the environmental component of variance and lets genetic differences among crosses be observed with little environmental confounding. We characterised an F2 population of 851 single plants derived from a partial ("smart") diallel with reciprocals among three bread wheat cultivars, namely Adana-99 (heat-

qPCR-Based Quantification As A Tool For Genetic Selection And Yield-Stable Breeding Against Restricted Phloem Pathogens In Potato.

The emerging phloem‑restricted pathogens Candidatus Arsenophonus phytopathogenicus (ARSEPH) and Candidatus Phytoplasma solani (PHYPSO), transmitted by the planthopper Pentastiridius leporinus, threaten European potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) production. This study used quantitative real‑time PCR (qPCR) to quantify ARSEPH and PHYPSO in 40 varieties grown at two field locations in southwest Germany under high natural P. leporinus pressure. Tuber assays revealed near‑complete infection (95.7-100%), dominated by co‑infections, with ARSEPH more prevalent and generally reaching higher copy numbers th

Association of Phenotypic Markers of Heat Tolerance with Australian Genomic Estimated Breeding Values and Dairy Cattle Selection Indices.

Dairy cattle predicted by genomic breeding values to be heat tolerant are known to have less milk production decline and lower core body temperature increases in response to elevated temperatures. In a study conducted at the University of Melbourne's Dookie Robotic Dairy Farm during summer, we identified the 20 most heat-susceptible and heat-tolerant cows in a herd of 150 Holstein Friesian lactating cows based on their phenotypic responses (changes in respiration rate, surface body temperature, panting score, and milk production). Hair samples were collected from the tip of the cows' tails fol

Optimizing female allocation to reproductive technologies considering merit, inbreeding and cost in nucleus breeding programmes with genomic selection.

Female reproductive technologies such as multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) and juvenile in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (JIVET) have been shown to accelerate genetic gain by increasing selection intensity and decreasing generation interval. Genomic selection (GS) increases the accuracy of selection of young candidates which can further accelerate genetic gain. Optimal contribution selection (OCS) is an effective method of keeping the rate of inbreeding at a sustainable level while increasing genetic merit. OCS could also be used to selectively and optimally allocate repr

Breeding Utilization of the White-Grained Pre-Harvest Sprouting-Resistant Wheat Landrace Tuotuomai Through Marker-Assisted Selection.

Improving pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) resistance in white-grained wheat is challenging because reduced grain pigmentation is often associated with weaker seed dormancy. Here, we evaluated the breeding value of the white-grained, PHS-resistant landrace Tuotuomai (TTM) and developed a molecular marker for tracking TTM-derived material during breeding. Based on phenotypic segregation and sequence polymorphism analysis, a KASP marker targeting a polymorphic site in the TaMyb10-D1 region was developed. The marker co-segregated with white grain color in the TTM × CS population, and the TTM-type mark

Potential selection for lipid kinase activity and spermatogenesis in Henan native pig breeds and growth shaping by introgression of European genes.

BACKGROUND: China has one third of the worldwide indigenous pig breeds. The Henan province is one of the earliest pig domestication centers of China (about 8000 years ago). However, the precise genetic characteristics of the Henan local pig breeds are still obscure. To understand the origin and the effects of selection on these breeds, we performed various analyses on lineage composition, genetic structure, and detection of selection sweeps and introgression in three of these breeds (Queshan, Nanyang and Huainan) using genotyping data on 125 Queshan, 75 Nanyang, 16 Huainan pigs and 878 individ

Strategic use of anti-GnRH vaccine allowing selection of breeding boars without adverse effects on reproductive or production performances.

Boar stations raise only entire male pigs for selection as reproductive boars, but the majority of them will fail the selection process, ending at slaughter with a high risk of boar tainted meat. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a single dose of Improvac given to 16-week old boars had a negative effect on their subsequent sperm numbers and motility in 16 artificial insemination boars. We also aimed to generate more knowledge on incidence of boar taint at slaughter among Finnish pigs, compare production performances as average daily gain, feed conversion ratio, and carcass and m

Impact of body weight and sex in selected dog breeds on the canine adrenal gland dimensions measured by computed tomographic imaging.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to investigate possible influences of body weight and sex on adrenal gland size in endocrinologically healthy dogs. Possible factors influencing the adrenal size are discussed in relation to a universal upper reference value from the literature of 7.4 mm as the thickness in the caudal pole of the adrenal gland. The adrenal size was measured by computed tomography (CT) from 66 normal dogs of six different breeds (Labrador Retriever (n = 16), German Shepherd (n = 10), Boxer (n = 8), Beagle (n = 14), Dachshund (n = 6) and Jack Russell Terrier (n = 12); male n =

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for detection of Trichinella spiralis antibodies and the surveillance of selected pig breeding farms in the Republic of Korea.

Trichinellosis is a parasitic zoonosis of public health importance. It is caused by Trichinella spiralis which has a wide host range including humans. In the present communication, the ELISA technique was employed on a total of 803 blood samples from 7 selected pig breeding farms in 1996 for diagnosis and surveillance of trichinellosis. Out of the entire 803 samples, nine were found to be suspected while one was positive by ELISA. But western blot analyses employed for further confirmation have shown that all of 10 samples did not react to larval excretory-secretory product antigens. These res

Exploring the nutritional riches of pointed gourd (Trichosanthes dioica Roxb.): a multivariate approach for selection of nutritionally superior genotypes for breeding programmes.

Pointed gourd (Trichosanthes dioica Roxb.) is an underutilized yet nutritionally rich vegetable with significant potential to address micronutrient deficiencies in India. However, limited information is available on the extent of variability in nutritional and antioxidant traits and their interrelationships among diverse pointed gourd genotypes, restricting the identification of nutritionally superior breeding materials. A total of 46 genotypes were evaluated for 15 fruit quality parameters, including total phenols, ascorbic acid, carbohydrates, protein, essential minerals, moisture content, a

Analysis of Selected Eye Disorders in a Group of Predisposed Breeds of Dogs: Molecular Diagnostics of Collie Eye Anomaly and Progressive Retinal Atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Two hereditary eye disorders that are frequently observed in Collies and related breeds are Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). The main symptom of CEA is choroidal hypoplasia. It is associated with a 7.8 kb deletion in intron 4 of the NHEJ1 gene located on chromosome CFA7. Rod-cone dysplasia 3 (RCD3), an early-onset form of PRA, is associated with mutations in the PDE6A gene. METHODS: Molecular diagnostic techniques were used in this study to identify genetic mutations linked to CEA and RCD3-type PRA in a subset of dog breeds. Australian Shepherds (n =

The breed prevalence of dog erythrocyte antigen 1.1 in the Onderstepoort area of South Africa and its significance in selection of canine blood donors.

The blood group antigen Dog Erythrocyte Antigen (DEA) 1.1 is clinically the most important canine blood group as DEA 1.1 antibodies are capable of causing acute haemolytic, potentially life-threatening transfusion reactions. Dogs do not have naturally occurring antibodies to DEA 1.1 but are rapidly sensitised by the first incompatible transfusion. The prevalence of DEA 1.1 in the general dog population is estimated at 42-46%. Canine blood donors registered with the Onderstepoort Animal Blood Bank (n = 93) as well as potential donors (n = 140) were typed for DEA 1.1 using a monoclonal antibody
