Group concept mapping to develop a salon-based HPV self-collection intervention.

BACKGROUND: Black women in the US face higher cervical cancer mortality rates due to delayed diagnoses linked to lower screening rates. Contributing factors include provider bias, costs, and limited access, particularly affecting women aged 40-64. While innovative approaches like clinical and home-based HPV self-collection exist, equitable dissemination remains challenging. Distributing HPV self-collection kits in unconventional sites like hair salons may offer a solution. Using concept mapping, we gathered community insights to design a salon-based cervical cancer screening intervention. MET

Sexual self-concept, functioning, and practices of women with binge eating episodes.

PURPOSE: Positive sexuality has received little empirical attention in relation to eating disorders. Two tendencies related to sexuality have been identified among women with anorexia nervosa (avoidance) and bulimia nervosa (disinhibition), but it is unclear if they also apply to women with binge eating episodes without compensatory behaviors. This study aimed at (1) exploring the sexual self-concept, functioning, and practices of women with binge eating episodes with or without comorbid restrictive and/or compensatory behaviors, considering past experiences of violence, and (2) verifying the

Knowing Who You Are: Neural Correlates of Self-concept Clarity and Happiness.

Self-concept clarity (SCC) focuses on the internal consistency and stability of individual self-concept and is assumed to be a critical indicator for one's subjective well-being (SWB), which is assumed to include emotional well-being (EWB) and cognitive well-being (CWB). However, the neurobiological basis of SCC and the neurological mechanisms underlying the relationship between SCC and SWB have not been well defined. Thus, this study explored the neural basis of SCC by correlating the fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (fALFF) and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) w

Effectiveness of Self-concept Management of Patients with Depression in Diabetic Ulcer.

BACKGROUND: This study explores the management of self-concept in improving the quality of life of diabetic ulcer patients. Low confidence in the quality of life is a factor causing patients with long-term diabetes to believe they cannot be cured properly. Ulcers result from diabetes mellitus complications due to the nervous system and blood vessel damage. Patients with diabetic ulcers experience depression and feel acute stress when the disease has been categorized as a chronic condition. METHODS: This study uses quantitative methods with a cross-sectional study design approach. The data col

Design of a self-unfolding delivery concept for oral administration of macromolecules.

Delivering macromolecular drugs, e.g. peptides, to the systemic circulation by oral administration is challenging due to their degradation in the gastrointestinal tract and low transmucosal permeation. In this study, the concept of an oral delivery device utilizing an elastomeric material is presented with the potential of increasing the absorption of peptides, e.g. insulin. Absorption enhancement in the intestine is proposed as a result of self-unfolding of a polydimethylsiloxane foil upon release from enteric coated capsules. A pH-sensitive polymer coating prevents capsule disintegration unt

Trauma and psychosis: The mediating role of self-concept clarity and dissociation.

Childhood trauma (CT) and psychosis may be associated. Drawing on the dissociation and social psychological literature, the current study examined the mediating role of structural aspects of self in explaining the relationship between childhood trauma and psychosis. Twenty-nine individuals with psychosis were compared with 31 healthy volunteers regarding childhood trauma, dissociation and self-concept clarity (SCC). High rates of maltreatment were found in the psychosis sample. Additionally, clinical participants reported more dissociation and less self-concept clarity. Mediational analyses we

Body-image, self-concept and mental exposure in patients with pectus excavatum.

BACKGROUND: Pectus excavatum is the most common congenital anomaly of the sternum and anterior chest wall, which occurs about 3-4 times more often in boys than girls [1]. Although most patients do not report physical symptoms as cardiovascular and respiratory problems, they show a loss of self-esteem and a poor self-image. There exist very rare data about psychological state before the OP compared with data afterwards. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to examine psychological changes in body-image, self-concept and mental exposure in patients with pectus excavatum, who had undergone the Nu

Self-concept in children with spina bifida compared with typically developing children.

The literature was systematically reviewed to determine if children with spina bifida have lower self-concept compared with their peers with typical development. Relevant trials were identified by searching electronic databases, supplemented by citation tracking. Of 803 papers initially identified, 15 met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis revealed children with spina bifida scored significantly lower than children with typical development for the domains of global self-worth (d=-0.39, 95% confidence interval [CI] -0.65 to -0.12); physical appearance (d=-0.26, 95% CI -0.46 to -0.06); athlet

An extended concept of altered self: chronic fatigue and post-infection syndromes.

Sickness behavior in active infectious diseases is defined here as the responses to cytokines and other mediators of inflammation as well as the adaptability of a pre-existing integrated immunological, psychological, neurological, and philosophical self. These complex behaviors are biologically advantageous to the afflicted individual, but they also impact surrounding individuals. If chronic conditions, such as chronic fatigue syndrome or post-infection fatigue, exhibiting these behaviors follow infection in the absence of ongoing changes in immunological self associated with an active infecti

[Change in the self-concept of drug-dependent patients in inpatient care].

As a rule, drug addicted people show a distinctly diminished estimate of the value of their selves. It is investigated whether this estimate changes during a inpatient stay on a drug rehabilitation ward and whether the selected methods of investigation form an adequate means of evaluating the therapeutic program. It can be shown that under certain conditions (duration of stay, compliance, problem-solving ability) this is indeed the case. However, it remains an open question, whether the observed amelioration has to be viewed as a non-specific effect of the change of milieu or whether it depend

Self-esteem in children with infantile hydrocephalus and in their siblings. Use of the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale.

Self-esteem, evaluated with the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale, an 80 item, self-report questionnaire, was investigated in 40 children (mean age 13.2 years) with infantile hydrocephalus (IH) and in 37 of their siblings (mean age 13.3 years). Thirty-one of the IH children had normal intelligence and 9 had mild mental retardation (MR). A comparison group consisting of 69 age-matched school children (mean age 10.3 years) was also evaluated. One-way analysis of variance indicated that the group IH with MR had the lowest mean scores, IH without MR was intermediate and the comparison gro

Ambivalent self-concept and feared self mediates the relationship between negative early life experiences and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

The feared self, the self that a person fears they might be or become, has been increasingly shown to drive the development and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, there is little empirical research on how this feared self develops. Aardema and Wong's cognitive-behavioural theory of OCD proposes that negative early life experiences (e.g., childhood trauma) can disrupt healthy self-concept development, leading to an ambivalent self-concept and the feared self, and consequently OCD symptoms. We investigated these hypothesised relationships using a cross-sectional design

Is "Self-Experience" Really a Transdiagnostic Concept? Preliminary Evidence in Favor of the Transdiagnostic Conception of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy.

Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) offers a radically behavioral and transdiagnostic conception of the formation of the "self" and the appearance of a diversity of psychological problems. This study examined the extent to which a wide variety of psychological disorders (somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility/aggressiveness, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, and psychoticism) and a global index of psychopathological severity may in fact be linked to problems of the "self" according to the FAP conception. Two questionnaires, one relate

Comparing the self concept of children with cerebral palsy to the perceptions of their parents.

PURPOSE: Understanding self concept is important for therapists treating children with cerebral palsy because knowing what children and parents think about perceived competencies and adequacies can be taken into account in determining treatment goals. This study investigated: (i) If differences existed between the self concept ratings of children with cerebral palsy compared to their parent's perception of their child's abilities and attributes, and (ii) the strength of association between the child and parent ratings. METHOD: Thirty children (14 females, 16 males; mean age 11 years 5 months,

[Counseling concepts and services of health-associated self-help initiatives].

Self-help groups formed increased since the beginning of the eighties; in the field of health especially chronically ill persons met to cope with their daily illness-related problems. As these self-help-initiatives developed into suppliers of services this study should provide information about the special quality of counselling concepts and other services. A telephone interview with 224 self-help initiatives revealed a high proportion of counselling activity (75%). Based on the concept of Grounded Theory a qualitative analysis shows that the perspectives "service provision" and "social suppor

Social media and women's sexual self-concept: a scoping review of psychosexual, body image, and genital self-perception outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Social media platforms have created digital environments that make women's bodies, sexuality, and self-presentation constantly visible, assessable, and comparable. Increasing evidence suggests that social media use can influence women's sexual self-concept through mechanisms such as appearance comparison, self-objectification, sexualized self-presentation, and genital self-perception. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesize the existing literature on the effects of social media use on women's sexual self-concept. METHOD: The study was conducted in accordance with the scopin
