Psychological processes and abilities for ceasing sex as self-injury- a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The term sex as self-injury (SASI) refers to sexual behaviors that are used as a means of self-injury, with motives such as emotional regulation comparable to other self-injurious behaviors, including burning or cutting the skin. The aim of this study was to explore which psychological processes and abilities that made it possible to cease SASI, to contribute to the knowledge that underpins psychological interventions and treatments. METHOD: The study was based on an open-ended questionnaire published on the websites of Swedish NGOs offering help and support to women and youths. I

Implementing an Interactive Self-screening Psychological Distress Tool for Residents and Fellows.

OBJECTIVE: Physicians have equivalent rates of depression and higher rates of suicide than other professions. While death by suicide is relatively rare, it is the leading cause of death in male resident physicians and the second leading cause of death in female resident physicians. Physicians who die by suicide are less likely to receive mental health treatment than non-physicians. The authors implemented a confidential, online, interactive screening program to help residents and fellow physicians gain awareness of their mental health, with the goal of reducing physician suicide. METHODS: The

Association between self-reported drug hypersensitivity reactions and psychological disorders.

BACKGROUND: Medically unexplained physical symptoms are a well-recognized problem and, in some cases, there is a well-established relationship between behavior and psychopathological disturbances. However, the association between drug hypersensitivity reactions and psychoactive disorders stills under discussion. OBJECTIVE: Our main goal was to establish if there is an association between self-reported drug hypersensitivity reaction and psychopathology with need for psychoactive drug consumption. METHODS: Retrospective study of adult patients evaluated in a first Immunoallergology appointment

Cognition and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: Exploring Relationships with Psychological Functions.

OBJECTIVE: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is strongly associated with difficulties in emotion regulation, but its relationships with maladaptive cognitive processes are less clear. METHOD: The current study examined relationships between self-reported NSSI (presence, number of methods, frequency, recency, duration, functions) and negative cognitive processes (rumination, worry, self-criticism, perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness) among 1,357 undergraduates. Cognition variables were submitted to exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and relationships were examined between the result

Psychological pain: A moderating factor between personality psychopathology and self-harm.

Objective: Self-harm and personality psychopathology have been linked, with the most robust correlations existing between negative affectivity and self-harm. Psychological pain, an emotionally-based aversive feeling, has been linked to self-harm. Considering the connection between personality psychopathology and self-harm, psychological pain may enhance self-harm risk. Participants: Analyses were conducted on 525 undergraduate students in the Spring and Fall semesters of 2019. Methods/Results: Correlation analyses indicated that self-harm was moderately correlated with Negative Affectivity, De

Treating nonsuicidal self-injury: a systematic review of psychological and pharmacological interventions.

OBJECTIVE: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), the deliberate, self-inflicted damage of bodily tissue without the intent to die, is associated with various negative outcomes. Although basic and epidemiologic research on NSSI has increased during the last 2 decades, literature on effective interventions targeting NSSI is still emerging. Here, we present a comprehensive, systematic review of existing psychological and pharmacological treatments designed specifically for NSSI, or including outcome assessments examining change in NSSI. METHOD: We conducted a systematic search of PsycINFO, MEDLINE, an

Pain acceptance, psychological functioning, and self-regulatory fatigue in temporomandibular disorder.

OBJECTIVE: A growing body of evidence suggests that chronic pain patients suffer from chronic self-regulatory fatigue: difficulty controlling thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Pain acceptance, which involves responding to pain and related experiences without attempts to control or avoid them (pain willingness), and pursuit of valued life activities regardless of pain (activity engagement) has been associated with various favorable outcomes in chronic pain patients, including better psychological functioning. The study presented here tested the hypotheses that pain acceptance is associated with

Self-castration by a transsexual woman: financial and psychological costs: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: The out-of-pocket cost for an elective orchiectomy, which is often not covered by health insurance, is a significant barrier to male-to-female transsexuals ready to proceed with their physical transition. This and other barriers (lack of access to a surgeon willing to perform the operation, waiting times, and underlying psychological and psychiatric conditions) lead a subset of transsexual women to attempt self-castration. Little information has been published on the financial costs and implications of self-castration to both patients and health care systems. AIM: We compare the

Childhood psychological abuse and adult aggression: the mediating role of self-capacities.

The current study examines the utility of self-trauma theory for explaining the long-term impact of childhood psychological abuse on aggression. Specifically, the self-capacities of interpersonal relatedness, identity, and affect regulation are tested as mediators of the impact of psychological abuse on various types of aggression in adulthood. Hierarchical regression analyses are used to examine data collected from 268 university students who completed the Personality Assessment Inventory, Comprehensive Child Maltreatment Scale, and the Inventory of Altered Self-Capacities. Results show that

Assessing psychological distress in cancer patients: validation of a self-administered questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Screening for psychological distress in cancer patients is important, considering the high prevalence of psychiatric disorders responsive to treatment. The aim of this study is to test the psychometric properties of the Psychological Distress Inventory (PDI), a 13-item self-administered questionnaire developed to measure psychological distress in cancer patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The PDI was tested in three samples of 434 cancer patients. In the first sample (n = 102) it was administered with the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and with the Eysenck Personality Questionna

Childhood maltreatment increases psychological distress among adolescents: Longitudinal mediating roles of self-continuity and self-control.

Despite the recognition that childhood maltreatment is a significant risk factor for psychological distress, few have differentiated the distinct effects of childhood abuse and neglect, and the underlying mechanisms remain inadequately understood. To address these gaps, this study employed a three-wave longitudinal design over 12 months to examine the effect of childhood abuse and neglect on psychological distress among 946 Chinese adolescents (47.60% girls; aged 13-17 years, Mage = 15.35, SD = 0.59) and revealed the mediating roles of self-continuity and self-control. Correlation results indi

Self-blame in major depression: a randomised pilot trial comparing fMRI neurofeedback with self-guided psychological strategies.

BACKGROUND: Overgeneralised self-blame and worthlessness are key symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD) and have previously been associated with self-blame-selective changes in connectivity between right superior anterior temporal lobe (rSATL) and subgenual frontal cortices. Another study showed that remitted MDD patients were able to modulate this neural signature using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) neurofeedback training, thereby increasing their self-esteem. The feasibility and potential of using this approach in symptomatic MDD were unknown. METHOD: This single-blind p

Psychological maltreatment and its relationship with self-esteem and psychological stress among adolescents in Tanzania: a community based, cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing recognition of childhood psychological maltreatment as a public health and human rights concern, it remains rampant in developing countries including Tanzania and has a negative impact on the victim's self-esteem during adolescence. There is a lack of published studies in Tanzania that examine the relationship between childhood psychological maltreatment and self-esteem during adolescence. This study describes the relationship between childhood psychological maltreatment and self-esteem and psychological distress among adolescents in Tanzania. METHODS: This was

Impact of self-guided mindfulness versus self-compassion application on physiological and psychological outcomes in workers: A randomized controlled trial.

This randomized controlled trial compared 4-week self-guided self-compassion meditation (SCM) and mindfulness meditation (MM) apps among workers in two active arms (n = 201); analyses included intervention initiators with session-level data (SCM n = 86; MM n = 85). Primary daily outcomes were pre-session levels and immediate pre-post changes in HR, heart rate variability by RMSSD, and subjective relaxation; secondary weekly outcomes were PANAS and Affect Grid scores. Repeated-measures ANOVA and linear mixed models examined time and group effects. Daily models showed increased pre-post RMSSD di

The association between academic self-esteem and college students' positive psychological qualities: the mediating role of general self-efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have primarily focused on the various psychological factors influencing college students' well-being, yet research on the specific role of academic self-esteem in fostering positive psychological qualities remains limited, especially when considering the mediating effect of general self-efficacy. Existing relevant research has only verified the potential mediating role of general self-efficacy in similar psychological construct relationships, failing to explicitly identify the specific type of mediation or quantify the relative contributions of direct and indirect

Cardiovascular reactivity to acute psychological stress is associated with generalized self-efficacy and self-efficacy outcomes during adventure challenges.

Outdoor adventure challenges are commonly used to enhance self-efficacy, but the physiological mechanisms involved remain unexplored. Additionally, while studies have documented the influence of self-efficacy on stress management, general self-efficacy has yet to be fully understood in the context of cardiovascular stress reactivity (CVR). This study investigated the influence of self-efficacy beliefs on CVR during acute psychological stress tasks. Additionally, it explored whether CVR serves as a novel mechanism underlying the outcomes of outdoor adventure challenges. As part of a wider rando

Collective Self-Esteem and Depressive Symptomatology in Lesbians and Gay Men: A Moderated Mediation Model of Self-Stigma and Psychological Abuse.

The context of stigma, in which lesbians and gay men live in most countries, exposes them to possible discrimination and promotes the internalization of negative attitudes about their own sexual orientation, which may have negative consequences for their mental health. Their psychological distress may increase when lesbians and gay men are exposed to other sources of stress such as intimate partner violence. With the aim of analyzing the relationship between these variables, this study intends to present a moderated mediation model that proposes: (a) self-stigma mediates the relationship betwe
