BACKGROUND: Post-stroke depression affects approximately one-third of stroke survivors. Self-compassion has emerged as a protective factor against depression in chronically ill populations, yet has received limited investigation in stroke survivors.
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the factorial structure and reliability of the German Self-Compassion Scale Short Form (SCS-D-KF) in stroke survivors and investigated whether self-compassion is associated with depressive symptoms beyond established risk factors.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined 407 patients (60.4% male) with acute str

INTRODUCTION: Self-compassion (SC) is associated with reduced eating disorder pathology, body dissatisfaction, and weight concerns, but most SC interventions and research samples focus on women. Because men often face unique challenges related to weight stigma and masculine norms, SC may be especially valuable in supporting emotion-regulation in health coaching programs. Little is known about how adult men engaged in weight loss interpret and experience SC, limiting the reach of interventions intended to support sustainable health behavior change. As such, the purpose of this study was to qual

Background/Objectives: Psychological safety is increasingly recognized as a clinically relevant construct linked to emotional regulation, interpersonal functioning, and trauma-related processes. Emerging evidence suggests that psychological safety may depend not only on embodied experiences of bodily regulation but also on how individuals relate to themselves under conditions of distress. The present study investigated the role of self-compassion and body perception on psychological safety. Methods: A total of 332 community participants were administered the Neuroception of Psychological Safet

There is growing interest in psychological processes that might be targeted in treatments for bipolar disorder (BD). One such process is a vulnerability at the level of self-concept, characterized by presence of, and fluctuations between positive and negative self-concept. The aim of the present study was to advance this literature by investigating the role of two emerging meta-cognitive processes - self-compassion and nonattachment to self - which have potential to therapeutically modulate this unstable self-concept in BD. Using an analog design, it was hypothesized that both variables would

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric disorder that significantly affects individuals' mental health. Sustained personal recovery in schizophrenia is a multidimensional process that extends beyond symptom reduction and may be significantly influenced by psychological resources and cognitive appraisals. While self-compassion and metacognitive beliefs are known to affect mental health outcomes independently, their interacting roles in predicting personal recovery remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined the mediating role of metacognitive beliefs in the relationship between

Narcissism, which features the chronic disposition to seek the opportunity to construct and maintain an inflated self, is a known risk for antisocial behaviour. However, knowledge of factors that mitigate the effects of narcissism on antisocial behaviour is lacking. In two studies we explored the hypothesis that self-compassion would protect against the link between narcissism and antisocial behaviour, such that narcissism would be less related to antisocial behaviour when self-compassion was high. Study 1 was a cross-sectional study with a sample of professional footballers (N = 208). Study 2

Individuals with fibromyalgia report lower levels of health-related quality of life (HRQL) compared to other chronically ill populations and interpersonal factors (i.e., social support) may influence risk. What is less understood is how intrapersonal factors (i.e., self-compassion) may impact the social support-HRQL linkage. We examined the association between social support and HRQL in a sample of persons with fibromyalgia and tested the potential mediating role of self-compassion. Self-identified adults in the United States with fibromyalgia (N = 508) were recruited from state, regional, and

Objectives Skin conditions can be accompanied by significant levels of depression; there is therefore a need to identify the associated psychological factors to assist with the development of appropriate interventions. This study sought to examine the effects of disgust propensity, disgust sensitivity, self-focused/ruminative disgust, and self-compassion on depression in people with skin conditions. Design A cross-sectional survey with follow-up survey. Methods Dermatology outpatients (N = 147) completed self-report measures of disgust traits, self-compassion, and depression. At three-month fo

PURPOSE: We investigated whether performance on predictors of academic achievement, namely, self-efficacy, self-compassion, and growth mindset, differ between adults, primarily college students, with a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their peers without TBI history.
METHOD: Eighty-nine respondents anonymously completed an online survey that included demographic questions and three predictive measures of academic achievement: the New General Self-Efficacy Scale (NGSE), the Self-Compassion Scale-Short Form (SCS-SF), and the Growth Mindset Scale. An additional 12 participants with TB

DESIGN AND METHODS: Thirty-five university nursing students in Japan participated in this randomized controlled trial. The revised process recording referred to self-compassion. Both the control and intervention groups completed the self-compassion scale (SCS) pre- and post-intervention. A repeated two-way analysis of variance examined the interaction effect of time × group on the SCS subscales.
FINDINGS: A significant interaction effect was observed only for mindfulness; the score only increased in the intervention group.
IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: The revised process recording migh

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy involves physiological, psychological, and social changes. Pregnancy-related anxiety can negatively affect maternal mental health, whereas self-compassion and well-being serve as protective factors. This study examined the relationships between pregnancy-related anxiety, self-compassion, and well-being in pregnant women.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 220 pregnant women attending a gynecology outpatient clinic in northern Türkiye. Data were collected using the Pregnancy-Related Anxiety Scale (PrAS), Well-Being in Pregnancy Scale (WIP), and Self-Compa

Armed Forces personnel are exposed to traumatic experiences during their work; therefore, they are at risk of developing emotional difficulties such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), following traumatic experiences. Despite evidence to suggest that self-compassion is effective in reducing the symptoms of PTSD, and greater levels of self-compassion are associated with enhanced resilience, self-compassion in armed forces personnel and armed forces veterans remains under-researched. As a result, it is not known if therapeutic approaches that use self-compassion interventions are an accept

Past research demonstrates interrelationships amongst rumination, self-compassion, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. However, little research has considered rumination and self-compassion together in relation to PTSD in clinical populations. In this cross-sectional study, we examined the unique effect of self-compassion on PTSD beyond the effect of rumination. Secondarily, we examined if rumination mediates the effect of self-compassion on PTSD. Participants included 52 US military Veterans (73.1% male) enrolled in a community support program for PTSD who completed self-report

BACKGROUND: Maladaptive perfectionism is a transdiagnostic risk and maintaining factor for a range of mental health conditions, including bipolar disorder (BD). Self-compassion represents a potential protective factor against maladaptive perfectionism, however no studies to date have examined the relationship of these constructs in BD. The aim of the present study was to examine associations between maladaptive perfectionism, self-compassion and symptoms among individuals with BD.
METHODS: Baseline data were collected from 302 participants with a DSM-IV diagnosis of BD participating in an int

INTRODUCTION: Self-compassion, a trait that involves responding to one's difficulties with care and concern, may offer unique stress coping benefits during the challenges of adolescence.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used survey data from a large adolescent sample within two U.S. school settings (N=1,057; 65% female; 68% white; mean age 14.7 years) to examine whether self-compassion buffers the impact of perceived stress on internalizing symptoms, and secondarily, if these relationships differ by gender.
RESULTS: Regression analysis revealed self-compassion is inversely related to inte

Child maltreatment, including abuse (physical, emotional, and sexual) and neglect (physical and emotional), is positively associated with depressive symptoms in adulthood. However, most studies have been conducted within a psychopathological framework and focused on underlying dysfunctional processes (e.g., insecure attachment styles, maladaptive schemas, and negative attribution styles). Protective factors that affect the relationship between child maltreatment and adult depressive symptoms are underexplored. Guided by emotion regulation theory and the perspective of positive psychology, we e

Post-event processing refers to negative and repetitive thinking following anxiety provoking social situations. Those who engage in post-event processing may lack self-compassion in relation to social situations. As such, the primary aim of this research was to evaluate whether those high in self-compassion are less likely to engage in post-event processing and the specific self-compassion domains that may be most protective. In study 1 ( N = 156 undergraduate students) and study 2 ( N = 150 individuals seeking help for social anxiety and shyness), participants completed a battery of questionn

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the characteristics and psychological mechanism of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents with mood disorders. We examined how self-compassion and emotional regulation affected NSSI and tested the mediating role of self-compassion in the link between emotional regulation and NSSI.
METHOD: We recruited outpatient and inpatient adolescent patients with bipolar and related disorders or depressive disorders (DSM-5), with a focus on NSSI. We also recruited healthy controls from the community. We collected demographic and clinical data. The Adolescent Self

Preparing nursing students to deliver holistic palliative care requires both clinical competence and readiness to address patients' spiritual needs. Spiritual care preparedness may be associated with psychological resources and educational experiences; however, these relationships remain insufficiently understood, particularly in culturally specific contexts such as Saudi Arabia. To examine the associations among self-compassion, palliative care self-efficacy, and spiritual care preparedness among nursing students, and to explore whether palliative care self-efficacy demonstrates a cross-secti

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The current study examined emotion dysregulation and self-compassion as an intervention in individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) symptoms.
METHODS: College students who met criteria for GAD according to questionnaires and non-anxious controls participated in an anxious mood induction. Subsequently, participants were randomized to a self-compassion or control intervention.
RESULTS: Following the mood induction, the GAD group reported less self-compassion, more emotion dysregulation, more state anxiety, and more negative affect than the control group. I
