Self-Management Programs and the Pursuit of Behavior Change.

A self-management intervention is a personalized approach to individuals aiming to engage individuals in a behavior change to develop skills to live better with their condition. Self-management involves an iterative process between participants and providers in which goals are formulated and feedback is given. A device and an app for the diagnosis and self-management of tinnitus.

Tinnitus is an annoying ringing in the ears, in varying shades and intensities. Tinnitus can affect a person's overall health and social well-being (e.g., sleep problems, trouble concentrating, anxiety, depression and inability to work). The diagnostic procedure of tinnitus usually consists of three steps: an audiological examination, psychoacoustic measurement, and a disability evaluation. All steps are performed by physicians, who use specialised hardware/software and administer questionnaires. This paper presents a system, to be used by patients, for the diagnosis and self-management of tin

Multicentre comparison of self-management in patients with COPD.

In patients with COPD, self-management plays an important role in disease management. Recently, self-management programmes have expanded patient education practices to include a variety of disease management techniques. We hypothesised that COPD patients have insufficient and/or different self-management needs according to institution. We compared information needs of patients between specialised clinics in Canada (SCC) and Japan and a hospital outpatient clinic in Japan (HCJ), all employing different self-management interventions.  This cross-sectional study evaluated patients' information ne

Self-management and skills acquisition in boys with haemophilia.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing prevalence of children/young people with long-term conditions (LTC) in the UK due to improvements in health-care management and delivery. These children are often involved, from an early age, in their own care and management; yet, there are little data to support how or when they develop the necessary skills and knowledge to become competent at this care. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to understand self-management of haemophilia, from a child's perspective, in the 21st century in the UK where intensive prophylactic therapy is given from early childhood. DESIG

Self-concept clarity and the management of social conflict.

In 4 studies we examined the relationship between self-concept clarity and conflict management. Individuals with higher self-concept clarity were overall more active and showed more cooperative problem-solving behavior than people with low self-concept clarity. There were no relationships with contending or yielding. The positive relationship with cooperative behavior was mediated by less rumination (Study 2) and moderated by conflict intensity (Study 3). Specifically, it applied to relatively mild conflicts (Study 3). Finally, Study 4 extended these findings to the group level: Dyad members w

Intermittent self-catheterisation for managing urinary problems.

Intermittent self-catheterisation is mainly practiced by patients with urinary incontinence or voiding difficulties. In one trust it was offered as an alternative to urology patients who fail their trial without catheter. A review of this practice investigated frequency of patient ISC, concordance with treatment and views on care.

Profiles of long COVID symptoms and self-efficacy for self-management: A cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Some patients with COVID-19 experience prolonged symptoms, known as long COVID. Self-management promises to improve symptoms, but little is known about the role of self-efficacy for long COVID symptom management. OBJECTIVES: To identify distinct subgroups of patients experiencing long-term post-COVID symptom burden, and to examine the association between the identified subgroups and self-efficacy for symptom management. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey design with a convenience sampling approach. This study included 491 adults who reported experiencing long COVID symptoms. Sympt

Self-surveillance by adolescents and young adults transitioning to self-management of a chronic genetic disorder.

Adolescents and young adults with Marfan syndrome (MFS) use information from self-surveillance to manage their disorder. Thirty-seven male and female adolescents with MFS aged 14 to 21 years were interviewed. They identified 58 distinct self-surveillance behaviors that fell into four categories and multiple subcategories (SCs): tracking phenotype (SCs: physical appearance, physical fitness, medical problems, and other observations); tracking medical care (SCs: medical evaluations and treatments, and pharmacotherapy); tracking behavior (SCs: personal choices and social relations); and tracking

This study aims to explore and analyze the internal correlation between self-management behavior and self-efficacy of patients with lower extremity artery disease. A convenience sampling method was used to select 146 patients with LEAD who visited the vascular surgery department in a hospital in Shanxi Province from January

Randomized feasibility trial of the Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network Self-Management (SPIN-SELF) Program.

BACKGROUND: The Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network (SPIN) developed an online self-management program (SPIN-SELF) designed to improve disease-management self-efficacy in people with systemic sclerosis (SSc, or scleroderma). The aim of this study was to evaluate feasibility aspects for conducting a full-scale randomized controlled trial (RCT) of the SPIN-SELF Program. METHODS: This feasibility trial was embedded in the SPIN Cohort and utilized the cohort multiple RCT design. In this design, at the time of cohort enrollment, cohort participants consent to be assessed for trial el

Predictors of self-management behaviors among patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Inadequate self-management has a significant impact on the mortality and morbidity of patients undergoing hemodialysis. The capacity for self-management is contingent on demographic, clinical, psychosocial, and cognitive factors. In particular, the role of family support and quality social interactions in this process is significant. The Individual and Family Self-Management Theory (IFSMT) emphasizes the integration of self-management into the lifestyles of the individual and family. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the factors that affect self-management in patients undergoing hemod
