Development and testing of a new self-locking intramedullary nail system: testing of handling aspects and mechanical properties.

A distal interlocking system has been developed which is easy to use, carries out an aligning effect on the distal fracture fragment, reduces the exposure to radiation for the surgeon and the patient, and allows for a decrease in operating time. The goal of this study was to develop and test the handling and mechanical properties of two prototype nails in comparison to a conventional interlocking nail concept (Unreamed Femoral Nail system). It was shown that the prototype designs represent an improvement over this system. Both designs were easy to use. The prototype with the asymmetrically off

The impact of community-based HIV self-testing dissemination on the HIV testing system at the county level.

BACKGROUND: Ending the HIV epidemic requires increasing HIV testing among at-risk persons, including addressing the limitations of venue-based testing. Using a community-based intervention (My Test/My Choice; MT/MC), we delivered free oral HIV self-tests (OHSTs) through LGBTQ+ businesses in Multnomah County, OR. We examined if disseminating OHST negatively impacted other segments of the HIV testing system. METHODS: We compared dissemination rates for Multnomah County's clinic-based and online HIV testing programs across three periods: (i) preintervention (July-September 2022), (ii) MT/MC inte

Performance of Self-Collected Saliva Testing Compared with Nasopharyngeal Swab Testing for the Detection of SARS-CoV-2.

The aim of this study was to determine whether self-collected pure saliva (SCPS) is comparable to nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs in the quantitative detection of SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR in asymptomatic, mild patients with confirmed COVID-19. Thirty-one patients aged from 18 to 85 years were included between 9 June and 11 December 2020. A SCPS sample and a NP sample were taken for each patient. Quantitative PCR was performed to detect SARS-CoV-2 viral load. Results of SCPS vs. NP samples testing were compared. Statistical analyses were performed. Viral load was significantly correlated (r = 0.72). The

Creating Innovative Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing Options for University Students: The Impact of an STI Self-testing Program.

BACKGROUND: National-level data suggest that sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing rates among young adults are low. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the acceptability of an STI self-testing program at a university health center. Few evaluations on the acceptability of collegiate self-testing programs and their effect on testing uptake have been conducted. METHODS: To assess acceptability and uptake of self-testing (urine and self-collected vaginal swab), we conducted a brief self-administered survey of students accessing a large US-based university health center from January

HIV self-testing practices among Health Care Workers: feasibility and options for accelerating HIV testing services in Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: HIV is still an enormous global burden and it is also causing loss of huge health care workers (HCWs) on the already limited human resource capacity in health care services in Sub-Saharan Africa. Variety of methods of accelerating HIV testing is required to increase the rate of HIV testing and expand treatment services. Therefore, this study was aimed to find out the prevalence, feasibility and options of HIV self-testing practices in Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design triangulated with qualitative method was conducted from February to May, 2012. The data was coll

aMMP-8 self-testing and self-administered questionnaires for periodontitis screening: A diagnostic trial in a Chinese population.

BACKGROUND: Limited awareness, clinical barriers, and persistent high prevalence make large-scale detection of periodontitis challenging, creating demand for simple, affordable, and population-level screening strategies outside traditional dental settings. This study evaluates the diagnostic performance of self-test activated matrix metalloproteinase-8 (aMMP-8) for identifying periodontitis and assesses the feasibility of a fully self-reported screening model compared with models based on quantitative aMMP-8 point-of-care test (POCT) results. METHODS: In this cross-sectional diagnostic study,

Motivations for testing and linkage to HIV services following HIV self-testing among fishermen in Kenya: a qualitative analysis.

HIV self-testing (HIVST) is a promising strategy to expand testing access for hard-to-reach populations such as Kenyan fishermen. We examined motivations and barriers to HIVST use and linkage to HIV prevention and treatment services (including PrEP or ART), within a social network-based intervention (NCT04772469). We conducted interviews (N = 64) and focus group discussions (N = 4) with fishermen in Siaya County, including 30 "promoters" who distributed HIVST kits and transportation vouchers within their social networks. Transcribed interviews were coded using framework analysis with a mixed i

[The roles of two HIV self-testing models in promoting HIV-testing among men who have sex with men].

Objective: To evaluate the roles between two different HIV self-testing models in promoting HIV-testing among men who have sex with men (MSM). Methods: This paper focuses on two HIV self-testing service models. The first; is the online self-testing model (HIV self-testing conventional model) with the sexual health promotion network platform. The other one is an innovative HIV self-testing model (secondary distribution model), based on the previous program. The two different self-testing models, including the number of indexes and alters, the positive rate, and the demographics of indexes and a

Feasibility of Capillary Self-Collected Blood Specimens for Routine Outpatient Laboratory Testing.

BACKGROUND: Capillary self-collection (CSC) devices allow patients to collect blood samples at home, potentially reducing outpatient phlebotomy visits. This study aimed to (a) assess the patient experience with multiple commercially available CSC devices; (b) determine which laboratory tests are commonly ordered together, which could reduce the need for appointments; and (c) evaluate the analytical performance of these tests using CSC samples. METHODS: User experience for 3 CSC devices was evaluated. Clinical feasibility was determined by comparing test results in paired sera collected by ven

[Budget impact of self-testing in the national cervical cancer screening program].

OBJECTIVES: A nationwide screening program for cervical cancer (CC) was organized in 2018 as part of the 2014-2019 French cancer plan, with the objective of reducing CC incidence and mortality in France by reaching an 80 % coverage rate. As an alternative to pap smear, vaginal self-sampling (VSS) aimed at identifying high-risk HPV carriage could help to achieve this goal. The objective of the present study is to compare the respective budgetary impacts of several self-sampling strategies. METHOD: A budget impact model was developed to compare non-use of self-sampling in CC screening to the 5-

Perspectives on HIV Self-Testing Among Key and Affected Populations in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Kenya's Key and Affected Populations (KAP) - men who have sex with men (MSM), female sex workers, people who inject drugs (PWID), and young women aged 18-24 - often experience stigma and discrimination in Kenyan health care settings due to their identity and/or behaviors, which can deter facility-based testing for HIV. Kenya has promoted self-testing as a means to reach these communities. OBJECTIVES: To identify KAP perspectives on self-testing and place our findings within Kenya's human rights and legal context. METHODS: We conducted 4 focus group discussions (FGD) and 16 in-dep

A theory of voluntary testing and self-isolation in an ongoing pandemic.

Beyond Covid-19, there is a growing interest in what economic structures will be needed to face ongoing pandemics. In this paper, we focus on the diagnostic problem and examine a new paradigm of voluntary self-testing by private individuals. We develop a dynamic model where individuals without symptoms face daily choices of either taking the risk of going out (to work and socialize), staying at home in self-isolation, or using a test to verify whether they are infected before going out. Our central insight is that the equilibrium public infection risk falls when home-based testing becomes chea

Usability testing of MySkinSelfie: a mobile phone application for skin self-monitoring.

Teledermatology generally involves doctors taking images of patients; however, patients increasingly want to own or have easy access to their health data. MySkinSelfie ( http://myskinselfie.com) is a mobile phone application (app) designed to improve the quality, consistency and accessibility of patient-held photos, and was developed to give patients the ability to generate and hold their own skin images to help guide their skin care. This study assessed the usability of this app in a cohort of patients attending a National Health Service Dermatology clinic. Patients were asked to use the app

Cervical dysplasia in elderly women performing repeated self-sampling for HPV testing.

BACKGROUND: About 30% of the cervical cancer cases in Sweden occur in women older than 60. The primary aim was to evaluate the acceptability of repeated self-sampling at home for HPV-testing in elderly women. The prevalence of HPV and HPV related dysplasia as well as the sensitivity of cytology was evaluated. METHODS: Repeated self-sampling at home for HPV testing was offered 375 women in each of the four age groups 60, 65, 70 and 75 years. Women with two consecutive positive HPV tests were examined with sampling for histology and cytology. FINDINGS: A self-sample was provided by 59.5% (893/

Why bother with testing? The validity of immigrants' self-assessed language proficiency.

Due to its central role in social integration, immigrants' language proficiency is a matter of considerable societal concern and scientific interest. This study examines whether commonly applied self-assessments of linguistic skills yield results that are similar to those of competence tests and thus whether these self-assessments are valid measures of language proficiency. Analyses of data for immigrant youth reveal moderate correlations between language test scores and two types of self-assessments (general ability estimates and concrete performance estimates) for the participants' first and

Testing an equifinality model of nonsuicidal self-injury among early adolescent girls.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a common behavior among females that has been shown to confer risk for continued self-injury and suicidal attempts. NSSI can be viewed conceptually as behavior that is pathognomonic with aggression and/or depression. Empirical research on concurrent correlates supports this concept: numerous and diverse factors are shown to be significantly associated with self-harm, including depression, emotion dysregulation, impulsivity, and aggression and other conduct problems, as well as environmental stressors such as bullying, harsh parenting, and negative life events.

Reducing barriers to testing for Chlamydia trachomatis by mailed self-collected samples.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (chlamydia) is the most commonly notified sexually transmissible bacterial infection in Australia, where distance to health services can be a barrier. This study investigated the acceptability of a self-collection kit for chlamydia testing (sent by mail) and assessed the risk profiles of participants with respect to locality. METHODS: In total, 2587 self-collection kits were distributed opportunistically or sent directly to participants upon request, as was a self-administered questionnaire. RESULTS: The return rate was 13.2% (n=341) for samples and question
