[Time-dependent vestibular function loss of semicircular canals and otolith organs in Menière's disease].

INTRODUCTION: Since Dohlmann's investigations the extremely variable interindividual natural course of Menière's disease has been documented. The description of sub-entities of Menière's disease shows, the localisation of dysfunction within the labyrinth is of considerable importance. The selective investigation of crista and macula sensor organs and its time-dependent progression even provides information for the disease's staging. METHODS: In the retrospective trial presented here, 126 patients suffering from vertigo were tested by the methods described above. 10 of these patients who showe

Occlusion of the Lateral Semicircular Canal Through the External Ear Canal: A Case Report.

This case report introduces a novel surgical procedure to occlude the lateral semicircular canal through the external auditory canal. The patient was a 64-year-old male with Ménière's disease who had suffered from left ear vertigo accompanied by tinnitus for more than 4 years. He also suffered from paroxysmal vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus symptoms, and ear distension and tightness. The patient had been treated with dexamethasone injected into the tympanic cavity for 1 year, but his condition often recurred and could not be controlled. We developed a novel procedure using an endos

The vestibulo-ocular reflex assessment in patients with Ménière's disease: examining all semicircular canals.

UNLABELLED: Abstract Conclusion: The distribution of abnormal results is not uniform between different canals in each patient; the most frequent gain reduction is obtained for the posterior canal. Gain reduction reflects the disease duration and amount of hearing loss. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) evoked after stimulation of each semicircular canal behaves in a different manner in patients with unilateral definite Ménière's disease. METHODS: We studied the VOR evoked by rapid head-impulses in the plane of the 6 semicircular canals in 36 patients. I

Regional difference in susceptibility to damage of vestibulo-semicircular canals in experimental labyrinthine lesion.

In the study on regional difference in susceptibility to damage of vestibulo-semicircular canals upon causing labyrinthine lesion by four different procedures, namely, by intracranial approach, through the middle ear, through the facial nerve and by means of experimental endolymphatic hydrops, the following results were obtained. 1. The crista of posterior semicircular canal among the semicircular canals and the macula of the saccule within the vestibule were most susceptible to impairment. In other words, the most susceptible region was the so-called pars inferior. In regard to the impairment

Wideband acoustic immittance in superior semicircular canal dehiscence.

OBJECTIVE: The apparent effect of superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) on middle ear- and cochlear impedance has led researchers to investigate the use of wideband acoustic immittance as a screening tool when SSCD is suspected. The purpose of the study was to describe the absorbance characteristics and tympanometric values of ears with confirmed SSCD measured at tympanometric peak pressure (TPP) and at ambient pressure. METHODS: Wideband Acoustic Immittance was performed at ambient pressure and at TPP on ten participants (12 ears) with confirmed SSCD, as well as on an age- and gender

Cochlear implantation and simultaneous posterior semicircular canal plugging.

BACKGROUND: Intractable benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) may be treated by plugging the affected semicircular canal (SCC). A cochlear implant (CI) can diminish subjective symptoms of tinnitus. We present a case with intractable BPPV and incapacitating tinnitus who underwent surgery, simultaneously plugging his posterior SCC (PSCC) and implanting an ipsilateral CI. CASE: A 50-year-old male experienced single-sided deafness (SSD) with severe ipsilateral tinnitus, and intractable BPPV related to the ipsilateral PSCC. Two years earlier, he had been treated with a bone anchored hearing

Children with posterior semicircular canal dehiscence: A case series.

Posterior semicircular canal dehiscence is a rare condition and can cause a variety of symptoms. We report three cases of children between 5 and 12 years of age with a PSCD. They all presented with different complaints as follows: Tullio phenomenon in the first case, conductive hearing loss in the second and, conductive hearing loss and pulsatile tinnitus in the third. Imaging showed in all cases a PSCD on the right side, caused by a prominent jugular bulb (high riding bulb). We describe the clinical, audiometric and radiological findings, and discuss the management and therapy. A conservative

Influence of Sex and Age on Posterior Semicircular Canal Thickness.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine whether sex and age influence posterior semicircular canal (PSC) thickness. METHODS: This observational study was conducted in 3 tertiary hospitals. The minimal distance between the PSC and the posterior cranial fossa (PSC thickness) was estimated by thin-section multidetector row computed axial tomography (CAT) scan of the temporal bones. Nonselected consecutive patients of all ages (607 temporal bones) were considered. RESULTS: A significant effect was only detected for sex (F = 5.418, p = 0.020); PSC thickness showed a higher mean value in

Posterior semicircular canal dehiscence secondary to jugular enlargement.

Semicircular canal dehiscence is an important entity often presenting with symptoms of noise or pressure induced vertigo, autophony, aural fullness and conductive hearing loss. Due to its varied presentation and mimic of other otologic conditions its consideration is of increased importance. Within we report a case of right sided posterior semicircular canal dehiscence secondary to an enlarged and high jugular bulb. The results of this observation indicate a need for patients with auditory symptoms and high riding jugular bulbs to be evaluated for possible posterior semicircular canal dehiscen
