Change in taste sensation after orthognathic surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of orthognathic surgery on taste sensation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five patients scheduled to undergo Le Fort I osteotomy (LFIO), sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO), and bimaxillary surgery (BMS) were evaluated by administering localized and whole-mouth taste tests preoperatively and postoperatively at months 1, 3, and 6. The patients were asked to identify the quality of four basic tastes applied to six locations on the palate and tongue and to rate the taste intensities they perceived. Taste recognition thresholds a

Restoring Tactile Sensation Using a Triboelectric Nanogenerator.

Loss of tactile sensation is a common occurrence in patients with traumatic peripheral nerve injury or soft tissue loss, but as yet, solutions for restoring such sensation are limited. Implanted neuro-prosthetics are a promising direction for tactile sensory restoration, but available technologies have substantial shortcomings, including complexity of use and of production and the need for an external power supply. In this work, we propose, fabricate, and demonstrate the use of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) as a relatively simple, self-powered, biocompatible, sensitive, and flexible dev

Primary cilia signaling mediates intraocular pressure sensation.

Lowe syndrome is a rare X-linked congenital disease that presents with congenital cataracts and glaucoma, as well as renal and cerebral dysfunction. OCRL, an inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatase, is mutated in Lowe syndrome. We previously showed that OCRL is involved in vesicular trafficking to the primary cilium. Primary cilia are sensory organelles on the surface of eukaryotic cells that mediate mechanotransduction in the kidney, brain, and bone. However, their potential role in the trabecular meshwork (TM) in the eye, which regulates intraocular pressure, is unknown. Here, we show that TM c

Validation of the urinary sensation scale (USS).

AIM: The purpose of this study was to assess the validity of the Urinary Sensation Scale (USS) in men with overactive bladder and voiding symptoms (OAB-LUTS) and women with overactive bladder (OAB). METHODS: Data from two OAB clinical trials of tolterodine were used. The USS, a 5-point scale, assesses the amount of urinary urgency associated with each urination. Three methods to calculate the USS are: mean urgency (Mean USS); mode urgency (Mode USS); and sum urgency (sum USS). The validity and responsiveness of the scoring methods was assessed using Spearman's correlations, general linear mod

Cortico-NRM influences on trigeminal neuronal sensation.

We tested the idea that migraine triggers cause cortical activation, which disinhibits craniovascular sensation through the nucleus raphe magnus (NRM) and thus produces the headache of migraine. Stimulation of the dura mater and facial skin activated neurons in the NRM and the trigeminal nucleus. Stimulation of the NRM caused suppression of responses of trigeminal neurons to electrical and mechanical stimulation of the dura mater, but not of the skin. This suppression was antagonized by the iontophoretic application of the 5-HT(1B/1D) receptor antagonist GR127935 to trigeminal neurons. Migrain

Applied principles of neurogastroenterology: physiology/motility sensation.

Many of the symptoms prominent in the functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are consistent with dysfunction of the sensory and/or motor apparatus of the digestive tract. Assessment of these phenomena in man can be undertaken by using a wide variety of invasive and noninvasive techniques, some well established and others requiring further validation. By using such techniques, alterations in both sensory and motor function have been reported in the FGIDs; various combinations of such dysfunction occur in different regions of the digestive tract in the FGIDs. Our understanding of the orig

Globus sensation caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease.

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to examine whether or not gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is implicated in globus sensation. METHODS: The subjects were 25 patients (16 men/9 women; mean age: 51, range 25-69 years) complaining of globus sensation with one or more of four laryngeal findings suspected of having GERD, such as pooling of saliva, erythema of posterior one-third of larynx, inter-arytenoids edema, and granuloma. All 25 patients were administrated a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) for a period of 8 weeks. All were given esophageal endoscopies, laryngoscopes, and questionnaire

Eyelid sensation after supratarsal lid crease incision.

PURPOSE: To determine the severity and duration of the loss of eyelid sensation after upper eyelid crease incision. METHODS: This clinic-based case study was performed by analyzing observational measurements of patients undergoing upper blepharoplasty or ptosis surgery. Eighty-three eyelids of 50 patients were studied. A Cochet-Bonnet filament-type aesthesiometer was used to obtain all measurements. Preoperative and postoperative measurements were recorded at 1 week, 1 month, and final (2-6 months) time periods. Statistical analysis evaluated the degree and duration of the sensory loss and th

Intermanual referral of sensation to anesthetic hands.

This report describes a study of patients with hands rendered anesthetic by stroke or neurosurgery. Touching the normal hand of such patients triggers sensations referred contralaterally to the anesthetic hand, paralleling observations of sensory referral to phantom limbs of amputees. The referred somatic sensations are elicited by touch but not usually by other kinds of stimuli, cannot be localized precisely, and do not support spatially organized perception. These characteristics suggest that referral may depend on reorganization in parietal cortical areas other than area 3b, the primary cor

Subjective sensation of heaviness in gout patients.

The main objective of the treatment of gout is to protect the major organs. Almost all gout patients require medication throughout their lives. Gout patients are asymptomatic during intercritical periods, even if they are not receiving antihyperuricemic drugs. Some patients, therefore, misinterpret that their gout is cured and may cease taking medication of their own accord. Thirty-two gout patients who had received continuous treatment with antihyperuricemic drugs for more than 3 months were selected. The sensation of heaviness was relieved by antihyperuricemic drugs in 14 (44%) of 32 patient

Many of the symptoms characteristic of the functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) are consistent with dysfunction of the motor and/or sensory apparatus of the digestive tract. Those aspects of sensorimotor dysfunction most relevant to the FGID include alterations in: gut contractile activity; myoelectrical activity; tone and compliance; and transit, as well as an enhanced sensitivity to distension, in each region of the gastrointestinal tract. Assessment of these phenomena involves a number of techniques, some well established and others requiring further validation. Using such technique

Corneal sensation after cataract and refractive surgery.

Most surgical procedures involving the anterior segment of the eye disrupt the normal organization of corneal innervation. Since denervation of the cornea results in impaired epithelial wound healing, increased epithelial permeability, decreased epithelial metabolic activity, and loss of cytoskeletal structures associated with cellular adhesion, it is important to identify the factors that determine the extent of neural regeneration. Mechanisms of corneal nerve damage and studies of corneal nerve fiber loss and reinnervation after cataract and refractive surgery--epikeratophakia, cryokeratomil

Further studies on nasal sensation of airflow.

The effect of applying a eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics cream (EMLA) to the nasal vestibule, upon both nasal sensation of airflow and action of menthol was studied in 25 normal subjects. Anaesthesia of the vestibule was shown to decrease nasal sensation of airflow, p less than 0.001. The action of menthol in enhancing the sensation of nasal airflow was unchanged, p greater than 0.05. This shows that sensory nerve endings located within the nasal vestibule and mucosa, are likely to be important in conveying nasal sensation. This study expands basic scientific knowledge in this important

Faecal incontinence associated with reduced pelvic sensation.

Eight patients with faecal incontinence associated with high threshold of rectal sensation are described. All had a normal anal sphincter on clinical and physiological assessment including anal manometry, pudendal nerve latency estimation and single fibre electromyography. In each case however rectal sensation was abnormal. The threshold of rectal sensation was 143 +/- 33 ml (range 110-200 ml) compared with control values of 39 +/- 14 ml (range 25-65 ml) (P less than 0.005) in 12 normal age-matched individuals. The degree of rectal distension required to initiate the recto-anal reflex was no d
