The virtual retinal display: a new technology for virtual reality and augmented vision in medicine.

The Virtual Retinal Display (VRD) is a new technology for creating visual images. It was developed at the Human Interface Technology Laboratory (HIT Lab) by Dr. Thomas A. Furness III. The VRD creates images by scanning low power laser light directly onto the retina. This special method results in images that are bright, high contrast and high resolution. In this paper, we describe how the VRD functions, the special consequences of its mechanism of action and potential medical applications of the VRD, including surgical displays and displays for people with low vision. A description of its safe

[An electronic visual aid using a luminance amplifier in night vision disorders].

The efficiency of a light amplifier system for the improvement of night vision has been tested on 30 normal subjects and on subjects suffering from night blindness including 36 patients with pigmentary retinopathy, 18 myopic patients with night blindness and 12 patients with senile cataracts. In all cases, the scotopic vision presented a great improvement and it reached up to half of photopic vision. The use of the light amplifier would certainly provide a considerable improvement for subjects suffering from night blindness and mostly for those suffering from pigmentary retinopathy. But two co

Field trials of a tactile acoustic monitor for the profoundly deaf.

Profoundly deaf subjects were given information about sound level in their environment by means of a body-worn unit coupled to a small vibrator worn on the finger. Results of trials on 19 adults are discussed. The Tactile Acoustic Monitor was found to be useful for identifying domestic sounds by means of their distinctive timing patterns. No significant overall improvement in subject's control of voice level was observed, although some subjects found that having a voice level monitor gave them greater confidence to join conversations. Various design improvements were suggested by the trials. M

Hearing and vision rehabilitation for people with dementia in five European countries (SENSE-Cog): a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The effect of hearing and vision difficulties on the risk of developing dementia and worsening outcomes in people already living with dementia is well established. We evaluated the clinical impact of a hearing and vision rehabilitation and support programme on quality of life in people with mild-to-moderate dementia and concurrent sensory difficulties. METHODS: We conducted a parallel-group, multicentre, observer-blind, superiority randomised controlled trial in seven older adult clinics in five European countries (Cyprus, France, Greece, Ireland, and the UK). People with mild-to-

The effects of tactile aids in video games for children's rhythmic coordination training: An fNIRS study.

Neurological or neurodevelopmental disorders, such as Parkinson's disease and dyslexia, can impair rhythm perception and production. Deficits in rhythm are associated with poor performance in language, attention, and working memory tasks. Research indicates that retraining rhythmic skills may enhance these related cognitive functions. In this context, using tactile aids for rhythm training emerges as a promising approach for children who do not fully benefit from conventional audiovisual rhythm games. This is because tactile aids can compensate for sensory deficiencies and facilitate more exte

Activated natural zeolites for beer filtration: A pilot scale approach.

A clinoptilolite-rich natural zeolite was tested as a substitute for kieselguhr as a filtering material to eliminate ingredients that cause beer haze formation. Two-grain sizes of micronized natural zeolite were thermally activated to 400 °C, to enhance its adsorption performance and remove the impurities adsorbed in the microporous system of zeolites, followed by their physicochemical characterization. The activated zeolites mixed with four commercial filter aids in different ratios were used for beer filtration at the pilot scale. Most of the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of be

The effect of eye disease, cataract surgery and hearing aid use on multisensory integration in ageing.

Sensory impairment is common in ageing, as are approaches to treat it. However, the impact of age-related sensory impairment upon multisensory perception remains unexplored, despite the multisensory nature of our environment. Here, we used data from The Irish Longitudinal Study of Ageing (TILDA) to investigate whether common, age-related eye diseases (cataracts, glaucoma and Age-Related Macular Degeneration, ARMD) and clinical intervention to improve sensory function (cataract removal and hearing aids) influence multisensory integration in older adults. Integration was measured using the Sound

[Hearing disorders in children with Down's syndrome].

Among 4947 children in an outpatients unit for hearing disorders 102 children with Down's syndrome were seen and checked for hearing disorders. 57 had hearing deficiencies, 50 (88 %) conductive hearing loss, 4 (7 %) combined and 3 (5 %) a sensory neural hearing loss. Compared to other publications the number of very young children was very high. 32 patients under two years of age had a hearing disorder. The results underline the necessity of early diagnosis and follow up also in children with normal reactions during the first presentation. Early diagnosis enables early treatment, conservative,

Cross-modal impact of auditory experience on visual cortical entrainment in children who are hard-of-hearing.

Cross-modal neuroplasticity is a well-studied phenomenon whereby in the absence of sensory input (e.g., in individuals who are deaf or blind), the sensory cortices of the affected modality are "taken over" by the unaffected sensory systems. This neuroplasticity is often coupled with changes in the dynamics of the unaffected primary sensory cortices themselves. Nonetheless, whether these cross-modal changes extend to those with mild-to-severe sensory loss where sensory input is degraded but not absent, as is the case for children who are hard-of-hearing (CHH), remains poorly understood. Brainstem plasticity and modified loudness following short-term use of hearing aids.

Previous research has shown that the threshold of the middle ear acoustic reflex is modified in adult listeners following 1 week of continuous monaural sensory deprivation [Munro and Blount, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 126, 568-571 (2009)]. The results of the present study provide evidence of plasticity in the brainstem of adult listeners following monaural auditory stimulation. Acoustic reflexes were obtained at a higher sound pressure level in the ear that had been fitted with a low-gain hearing aid for 5 days. These changes are in the opposite direction to those reported after sensory deprivation a

Visual performance and reading capacity of partially sighted persons in a rehabilitation center.

Visual acuity and reading performance of 178 partially sighted patients from a rehabilitation center were measured using a TV text display device. A linear relation was demonstrated between visual acuity and reading speed for patients with visual acuity values below 15% of the normal value. With respect to reading performance, three groups of partially sighted patients could be distinguished: (1) 25% of the patients are unable to read visually and require tactile reading aids; (2) 50% are partially sighted and require high-magnification electronic reading aids; (3) 25% can read normal text by

A multiple-channel cochlear implant: an evaluation using open-set CID sentences.

A multiple-channel cochlear implant and speech processor have been used in two postlingually deaf adult patients with a total hearing loss, to enable them to perceive varying degrees of running speech. The results have veen confirmed with open-set CID everyday sentence tests. Using the implant alone, the patients obtained 8% and 14% scores with prerecorded material, and 34% and 36% scores for "live" presentations. This was equivalent to the perception of 35% of connected discourse. When the implant was used in conjuction with lipreading, improvements of 188% and 386% were obtained over lipread

Space-occupying lesions of the sensori-motor region.

Successful surgery of the sensori-motor region requires precise pre- and intraoperative localization of the sensori-motor region and pyramidal tract. Important aids are the landmarks of cranio-cerebral topography, coronal suture and bregma and the sulcal anatomy of the sensori-motor region, which can be identified in CT or MR images. Due to considerable displacement and distortion of the anatomical structures, elicited by mass lesions, these aids often fail to render reliable support. In this situation, identification of the motor area can be achieved by electrical stimulation of the precentra

Neurological diagnosis--aspects of quantitative sensory testing methodology in relation to hand-arm vibration syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives are to summarise the fundamental neurophysiological base for quantitative sensory testing (QST), and to discuss associated methodological and practical aspects necessary to consider with respect to applicability and reliability as a screening or diagnostic aid for vibration-induced sensory neuropathy. RESULTS: QST is the use of psychophysical techniques to measure the intensity of stimuli needed to produce specific sensory perceptions. The physical components are graded stimuli presented to the skin, eye or ear. The psychological component is mental recognition of th

Self-reported dual sensory impairment, dementia, and functional limitations in Medicare beneficiaries.

BACKGROUND: Vision and hearing impairments often co-exist with dementia, and all are independently associated with limitations in daily activities. Our aim was to examine the association of dual sensory impairment with functional limitations, and further examine the combined estimated association of sensory impairment and dementia with these functional limitations. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), a population-based cohort of Medicare beneficiaries, was performed. Participants were selected from the 2015 round. Survey weighted Poisson re

Encoding/decoding of first and second order tactile afferents in a neurorobotic application.

We present a neurorobotic framework to investigate tactile information processing at the early stages of the somatosensory pathway. We focus on spatiotemporal coding of first and second order responses to Braille stimulation, which offers a suitable protocol to investigate the neural bases of fine touch discrimination. First, we model Slow Adaptive type I fingertip mechanoreceptor responses to Braille characters sensed both statically and dynamically. We employ a network of spiking neurones to transduce analogue skin deformations into primary spike trains. Then, we model second order neurones

Effect of pattern glare and colored overlays on a stimulated-reading task in dyslexics and normal readers.

Scotopic sensitivity syndrome or the Irlen syndrome describes symptoms of asthenopia anamolous visual performance experienced while reading that are lessened by colored filters. One putative explantation for this condition relates to pattern glare: a hypersensitivity to repetitive patterns, including lines of print on a page. Experiment 1 used a placebo-controlled paradigm to investigate the effect of pattern glare and colored overlays on performance at a simulated reading visual search task. Despite the fact that the subjects were university students, the results showed a tendency, of border-

Persistent auditory hallucinations despite hearing aid use in bilateral sensorineural hearing loss without evidence of psychosis.

Auditory hallucinations are frequently linked to the onset of psychotic disorders, especially when accompanied by delusions or disorganized thinking. However, hallucinations may also arise from non-psychiatric causes. Hearing loss is often underrecognized as a contributing factor, since reduced auditory input can produce perceptual experiences that mimic psychosis. This case report presents a woman in her 50s with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss who experienced persistent auditory hallucinations for more than 3 years. She maintained insight, normal daily functioning, and exhibited no othe
