Completion lymph node dissection (CLND) following positive sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for cutaneous melanoma is a topic of controversy. The second Multicenter Selective Lymphadenectomy Trial (MSLT-II) suggested no survival benefit with CLND over observation amongst patients with a positive SLNB. The findings of the MSLT-II may have limited applicability to our high-risk population where nodal ultrasound and non-surgical melanoma treatment is rationed. In this regional, retrospective study, we reviewed primary melanoma, SLNB and CLND histopathological reports in the Bay of Plenty Distric

BACKGROUND: The number of involved axillary lymph nodes (LNs) found pathologically is regarded as a significant prognostic factor in early-stage breast cancer (EBC). Recently, there is speculation that LN ratio (LNR) may be a better surrogate at predicting cancer-specific outcome than number of involved LNs. This study investigated prognostic value of LNR, using predetermined cutoff values.
METHODS: Data included all women diagnosed with node-positive EBC between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2010 (N = 553). Retrospective evaluation for clinical, demographic, and pathologic data was perfo

BACKGROUND: Melanoma is the leading cause of skin cancer-associated mortality. The vast majority of newly diagnosed melanomas are confined to the primary cutaneous site. Surgery represents the mainstay of melanoma treatment. Treatment strategies include wide excision of the primary tumour and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) to assess the status of the regional nodal basin(s). SLNB has become an important component of initial melanoma management providing accurate disease staging.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects and safety of SLNB followed by completion lymph node dissection (CLND) for the

BACKGROUND: Prior ipsilateral completion axillary lymph node dissection (CALND) may be considered a contraindication to performing a sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping in a patient with recurrent breast carcinoma. However, reoperative SLN biopsy following axillary dissection would determine if alternative lymphatic drainage pathways exist. If nodes were found to contain metastatic disease, staging and locoregional control of the disease could be affected.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An institutional breast cancer database and electronic health record (IRB No. 102554) prospectively accrued 6225 pati

BACKGROUND: Regional lymph node tumor volumes in patients undergoing sentinel lymph node (SN) biopsy (SNB) for treatment of cutaneous melanoma have not been described. The objectives of this study were to describe the lymph node tumor volumes typically seen in this population and to correlate tumor volumes with tumor thickness and positive SN characteristics.
METHODS: Review of a consecutive series of patients with clinically localized cutaneous melanoma who underwent SNB of nonpalpable regional lymph node basins followed by complete lymphadenectomy (LND) was performed. Multiple lymph node se

BACKGROUND: Axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) may not be necessary in women with breast cancer who have micrometastasis in a sentinel node (SN), owing to the low risk of non-SN (NSN) involvement. The aim of this study was to identify a subgroup of women with a micrometastatic SN and a negligible risk of positive NSNs in whom ALND may be avoided.
METHODS: Some 237 of 241 women with a macrometastatic SN and 122 of 138 with a micrometastatic SN underwent completion ALND and were compared with respect to NSN involvement. The 122 patients with SN micrometastasis were further analysed to determ

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Lymphatic drainage from subcostal nodes, along the costal groove, have not previously been characterized as sites for melanoma drainage and metastasis. This study reports a series of patients with subcostal nodes draining primary melanomas, with characterization of the sites of primary melanomas that drain to these nodes.
METHODS: Patients who presented to our institution between 2005 and 2020 with documented cutaneous melanoma and sentinel lymph node biopsy of a subcostal node (sentinel = S), or metastases to subcostal nodes later in clinical management (recurrent

There are many reports on the frequency of non-sentinel lymph node involvement when isolated tumor cells are found in the sentinel node, but results and recommendations for the use of an axillary lymph node dissection differ among studies. This systematic review was conducted to give an overview of this issue and to provide recommendations for the use of an axillary lymph node dissection in these patients. We searched Medline, Embase, and Cochrane databases from January 1, 2002, through November 27, 2007, for articles on patients with invasive breast cancer who had isolated tumor cells in the

BACKGROUND: Axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) is the current standard of care for breast cancer patients with sentinel lymph node (SN) involvement. However, the SN is the only involved axillary node in a significant proportion of these patients. Here we examined factors predictive of non-SN involvement in patients with a metastatic SN, in order to develop a scoring system for predicting non-SN involvement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was based on a prospective database of 337 patients who underwent SN biopsy for breast cancer, of whom 81 (24%) were SN-positive; we examined factors p

INTRODUCTION: Although the sentinel lymph node Biopsy (SLNB) is well stablished in solid tumors among adults but the experience on SLNB in pediatrics is still limited. In this article we report our experience of sentinel lymph node detection that is applied on pediatric solid renal tumors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty 1-16 year old children with non-metastatic primary Wilms tumor regarding the radiological studies were enrolled. Radio tracer injection was carried out after renal vein, artery and ureter ligation, at the time of radical nephrectomy. Sentinel node detection and sampling was perf

Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a critical component of melanoma management. Extensive prior surgery at the site of a primary melanoma is considered a relative contraindication for SLNB. While evidence suggests that SLNB may be performed accurately even in those patients who have undergone prior wide local excision, it is less clear whether patients who have undergone more extensive surgical procedures, particularly flap reconstructions, can benefit from this procedure. We report a case of a patient who had undergone surgical removal of a primary melanoma and subsequent reconstruction wit

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) in popliteal basins are rare, and there is controversy in literature regarding their origin, management, and outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: To correlate clinical and pathological features of popliteal basin drainage and analyze the impact of popliteal lymph node drainage on survival.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of SLN biopsies performed at a single institution between 2000 and 2010.
RESULTS: SLN biopsies were performed in 254 patients with melanoma in lower limbs, 247 of which were evaluated. In this group, there were 59 patients (24%) with a

Benign glandular inclusions in axillary lymph nodes are uncommon, and their presence in axillary sentinel lymph nodes is exceptionally rare. The possibility of over-staging due to misinterpretation of glandular inclusions as metastatic carcinoma is a concerning issue. We present a 54-year-old female with high grade ductal carcinoma in-situ undergoing simple mastectomy with sentinel lymph node biopsy. Permanent sections of the sentinel lymph node revealed scarce naked small glands without surrounding stroma scattered in the paracortex in the superficial level. Deeper levels showed glands spanni

This report describes an unusual case of mammary intraductal papillomas coexistent with sentinel lymph node papilloma. A 47-year-old Japanese female underwent 5 needle manipulations and 2 surgical biopsies for recurring papillomas in the right breast over 5 years before having a simple mastectomy. During the mastectomy, the ipsilateral sentinel node was found to be extensively occupied by completely benign papilloma that measured 6 mm in its greatest dimension. The clinical history led us to put forward the working hypothesis that the nodal papillary lesion may develop from the epithelial cell

Lymph node status is the most important prognostic factor in vulvar cancer. Histologically, sentinel nodes may be representative of the status of the other regional nodes. Identification and histopathologic evaluation of sentinel nodes could then have a significant impact on clinical management and surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and diagnostic accuracy of sentinel lymph node detection by preoperative lymphoscintigraphy with technetium-99 m-labeled nanocolloid, followed by radioguided intraoperative detection. Nine patients with stage T1, N0, M0, and 11 patients

The tumor status of the axillary lymph nodes is the single most important predictor of survival for patients with primary breast cancer. Because of its essential role in staging, regional control, and perhaps survival, axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) has long been the standard of care for patients with operable breast cancer. During the past decade, the introduction and development of sentinel lymph node dissection (SLND) for primary breast cancer have allowed surgeons to determine the tumor status of the axilla without a standard level I and II ALND. Several well-designed studies have d

BACKGROUND: Axillary lymph node staging is the most powerful predictor of survival in breast cancer women. Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is more accurate method in evaluation of axillary lymph node staging than complete axillary lymph node dissection (CALND) because of more precious histological and imunohistochemical assessment of the first draining lymph nodes. Furthermore, SLNB eliminates complications resulting from CALND.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: SLNB is either performed using blue dye technique or using of combination of blue dye and radioguided technique. We prefer two days protocol i
