Standard sonographic views of the brain obtained along the axial planes at mid-gestation failed to identify absence of the septum pellucidum in two consecutive fetuses. It was presumably the close proximity of the walls of the lateral ventricles that generated an artifact resembling a normal cavum septi pellucidi. In one of these fetuses, septo-optic dysplasia was confirmed by magnetic resonance demonstration of hypoplastic optic tracts. In the other fetus, isolated absence of the septum pellucidum was the final diagnosis. Standard axial scans are unreliable in predicting absence of the septum

Neurodevelopmental assessments were performed on seven patients with optic nerve hypoplasia and absence of the septum pellucidum on MRI. The evaluation included neurological status, language development, neuropsychological functioning, and behavioral and emotional adjustment. Six of the seven were found to have normal cognitive development, intact neurological status, normal language development and age-appropriate behavior. Abnormal findings included early poor motor coordination, which was felt to be closely related to decreased visual acuity, as well as subtle visual attentional problems wh

A 21-year-old man, who had had normal sexuality, noticed a decrease in libido and potency as well as loss of ejaculation. Endocrinological evaluation showed normal serum levels of gonadotropins but a low testosterone level. The response to clomiphene citrate was poor while the response to luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone and human chorionic gonadotropin were within normal limits. By the examination of brain computerized tomography a tumor was detected in the septum pellucidum and was resected. Histologically it proved to be a mixed tumor composed of astrocytoma and oligodendroglioma. Two

OBJECTIVE: Cysts of the septum pellucidum (CSPs) may become symptomatic because of obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid flow, resulting in increased intracranial pressure and hydrocephalus requiring surgical intervention. Endoscopic fenestration may be the most effective and least invasive technique to treat this pathological condition.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old boy sought treatment for frequent episodes of severe headache. On examination, he had papilledema. There was evidence on magnetic resonance imaging scans of a space-occupying CSP with obstructive hydrocephalus.
INTERVENTION

Cavum septum pellucidum (CSP) is commonly observed upon neuroimaging examination in individuals exposed to repetitive head impacts (RHI) and post-mortem in cases with chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Consequently, CSP has been proposed as a potential biomarker for RHI-related neurodegeneration, yet prevalence estimates of CSP across other neurodegenerative diseases and its clinical implications are largely unknown. We assessed CSP prevalence and clinical correlates in individuals with RHI exposure, a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI), a neurodegenerative disease (i.e. Alzheimer's diseas

Cavum septum pellucidum (CSP) is a neurodevelopmental anomaly, which is commonly reported in schizophrenia patients. Various symptoms of schizophrenia, including thought disturbances have been associated with CSP. We present a rare case of undifferentiated schizophrenia with CSP who presented with self-mutilating behaviors.

In the previous article, we considered the normal appearances of the midline stuctures of the brain as they appear on high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging. In this article, we discuss the effects of failed commissuration on the midline structures. We highlight some of the misconceptions of this process that may lead to misdiagnosis of agenesis of the corpus callosum in utero.

Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD; De Morsier syndrome) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by the absence of the septum pellucidum (SP), hypoplasia of the optic chiasma and nerves, and various types of hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction. We report on two fetuses with absence of the SP diagnosed by ultrasound examination at 29 and 30 gestational weeks. In the first case the diagnosis of SOD was suspected in utero and confirmed postnatally; to the best of our knowledge this is the first report of the prenatal diagnosis of SOD. In the second case absence of the SP appeared to be isolated and no

Panic disorder is thought to involve dysfunction in the septohippocampal system, and the presence of a cavum septum pellucidum might indicate the aberrant development of this system. We compared the prevalence and size of cavum septum pellucidum in 21 patients with panic disorder and in 21 healthy controls by magnetic resonance imaging. The length of the cavum septum pellucidum was measured by counting the number of consecutive 1-mm coronal slices in which it appeared. A cavum septum pellucidum of >6 mm in length was rated as large. There was no significant difference in the proportion of pati

A 61-year-old female was referred because of headache and gait disturbance. A computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a midline isodense mass lesion. The limit of the tumor was equivocal even after administration of contrast medium. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study, however, clearly showed the relationship between the tumor and the surrounding structures, such as the corpus callosum, the ventricular cavities. The tumor had originated from the region of the septum pellucidum and positioned just beneath the corpus callosum from the genu to the splenium with the roof of the third ventricle p

INTRODUCTION: Cavum Septum Pellucidum (CSP) is an anomaly with varied presence among normal adults (1% − 85%). The structure is observed in various neurological conditions like epilepsy, cerebro vascular accidents (CVA), persistent headache. This study is conducted to assess its prevalence among those with neurological symptoms and its association with neurological diseases. METHODS: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among the adults with common neurological complaints was conducted at a multi-disciplinary tertiary care hospital and Computerised Tomography (CT) scans of the bra

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic cysts of the septum pellucidum (CSP) are extremely rare in children and surgical indications are not well defined. A very careful clinical and neuroradiologic evaluation is necessary to consider a patient for surgical indication.
METHODS: We present a surgical series of 7 pediatric patients. Clinical and radiological features of the patients, including clinical presentation, previous treatment, pre, and post-operative MRI, immediate postoperative, neuropsychiatric assessment, and outcomes were reviewed.
RESULTS: There were 5 males and 2 females (mean age 8 yrs). Five

BACKGROUND: Gangliogliomas are low-grade neoplasms that typically affect patients under the age of 30 and present with epilepsy and symptoms of mass effect. Here, we report a case of an intraventricular ganglioglioma involving the septum pellucidum in a pediatric patient with history of optic glioma. Only one other pediatric intraventricular ganglioglioma arising from the septum pellucidum has been reported previously.
CASE REPORT: The patient initially presented at 9 months of age with a pilocytic astrocytoma centered on the optic chiasm, treated with chemotherapy and radiation at 3 years of

Sellar cysticercosis is a rare form of neurocysticercosis. A septum pellucidum cysts is a rare, often asymptomatic cystic structure between the lateral ventricles. We report here a male patient with sellar cysticercosis and septum pellucidum cysts who was successfully treated by neuroendoscopic resection. The patient was a 28-year-old male who presented with intermittent headaches for 5 years. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed a well-circumscribed 13 mm cystic space-occupying lesion in the sellar region and the cavum septum pellucidum. The cyst in the saddle area was com

Thirty-two female (mean age=52.9 years [SD=9.2]) patients with a diagnosis of residual schizophrenia and 19 female (mean age=51.1 years [SD=12.7]) control subjects were studied through cerebral Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Along the entire surface of the septum pellucidum, 1-mm coronal slices were performed in all subjects. The authors classified the cavum septum pellucidum into three types based on embryological development. The prevalence of a cavum was significantly higher in the patients with schizophrenia (Chi square 6.112. p < 0.05). No other significant associations with previously descr

The authors' material was based on the analysis of 49 patients with primary gliomas of the lateral ventricles and transparent septum who were treated from 1988 to 1992. The main method of patients' selection was to analyze clinical and topographic data obtained from computed and magnetic resonance tomographic studies. In 39 (79.6%) cases, the tumors were found in the cavity of the lateral ventricles, in 10 (20.4%) cases there was a partial paraventricular growth when the bulk of the tumors was located in the lumen of the lateral ventricles. Out of the 49 patients examined, 46 (93.3%) were oper

In a review of more than 2000 MR images of the brain we identified 35 patients with absence of the septum pellucidum. These patients were divided into seven basic groups as follows: septooptic dysplasia; schizencephaly; holoprosencephaly; agenesis of the corpus callosum; chronic, severe hydrocephalus; basilar encephaloceles; and porencephaly/hydranencephaly. Absence of the septum pellucidum was never seen as an isolated finding. By using data gathered from the review of the MR scans of patients in this study, we devised a diagnostic algorithm to aid in the classification of these patients. Abs
