A cross-species test of cognitive flexibility: Assessing the influence of phrasing cue modality on serial pattern performance in rats (Rattus norvegicus) and humans (Homo sapiens).

The serial multiple choice task is a cross-species model of serial pattern learning that recruits multiple cognitive mechanisms concurrently. The task requires subjects to learn a complex sequence of responses that follow a specific pattern, which is further organized by the placement of distinct cues throughout the sequence. These cues, termed phrasing cues, denote locations in the pattern where response strategy shifts. Although research suggests that phrasing cues facilitate pattern learning, there is a lack of information on how subjects encode these phrasing cues during the pattern learni

The persistence of rapid naming problems in children with reading disabilities: a nine-year follow-up.

In this study 9 children (6 boys, 3 girls) with reading disabilities and specific difficulties in rapid serial naming were followed from age 9 years to age 18 years. This group was taken from an earlier study sample of 82 third-grade children with learning disabilities. Tests of rapid serial naming, reading and spelling, general intelligence, articulation speed, and word fluency were administered to the subjects and to a matched control group (n = 10) in the initial study (at age 9) and in the present follow-up study (at age 18). The results showed that difficulties in both rapid naming and re

Sequential and simultaneous processing abilities of high-functioning autistic and language-impaired children.

Investigated the Sequential and Simultaneous processing distinctions of high-functioning autistic children and children with a developmental receptive language disorder (DRLD). Twenty autistic subjects and 20 DRLD subjects were matched on age and gender, and compared to each other on their Sequential and Simultaneous processing abilities utilizing the K-ABC and selected subtests of the WISC-R. Results showed that both groups manifested a relative sequential processing deficit. However, the groups did not differ significantly on their overall sequential and simultaneous processing capabilities

Do children with a specific reading disability have a general serial-ordering deficit?

Two experiments are described in which reading disabled subjects and their normal controls were tested for their ability to abstract sequential regularities from a noisy background. Subjects were presented with an adaptation of the repeated digits task of Hebb (1961) and its spatial analogue the Corsi Blocks (Milner, B. Br. Med. Bull. 27, 272-277, 1971). Normal subjects had a digit span significantly better than their block span and also significantly better than that of the disabled readers. This suggested that normal subjects have better defined "storage filters" for digits or a specific adv

Role of the human supplementary eye field in the control of saccadic eye movements.

The precise function of the supplementary eye field (SEF) is poorly understood. Although electrophysiological and functional imaging studies are important for demonstrating when SEF neurones are active, lesion studies are critical to establish the functions for which the SEF is essential. Here we report a series of investigations performed on an extremely rare individual with a highly focal lesion of the medial frontal cortex. High-resolution structural imaging demonstrated that his lesion was confined to the region of the left paracentral sulcus, the anatomical locus of the SEF. Behavioural t

Unusual modality effects in less-skilled readers.

University students who were skilled or less-skilled readers were compared on tests of auditory information processing and immediate serial recall of auditory and visual digits. Reading skill was defined by performance on a pseudoword reading task. The good readers exhibited typical modality effects with higher recall of auditory than visual items from the last 3 serial positions. On the terminal list item, the less-skilled readers showed a modality effect comparable with that of the skilled readers, but on other list items the modality effect reversed and a visual superiority was obtained. "Experimental amnesia" induced by emotional items.

Tulving described an effect of retrograde amnesia in a free-recall task of word lists, produced by inserting items having priority in recall. Other authors confirmed the amnesic effect without giving instructions for priority both in recall and in recognition tasks. The effect was explained by Tulving as a premature termination of encoding processes. The similarity between these experiments and the researches aimed at reproducing amnesia by emotional trauma led us to hypothesize that the two phenomena might be due to the same functional mechanisms. We have organized a free-recall task of word

Effects of atropine on the repeated acquisition and performance of response sequences in humans.

The present study assessed a 24-hr time course for the acute effects of intramuscular injections of atropine sulfate (0, 1.5, 3.0, and 6.0 mg/70 kg) in healthy adult humans responding under a two-component multiple schedule of repeated acquisition and performance of response sequences. Subjects resided in an inpatient research ward for the duration of the study. In each component of the multiple schedule, subjects completed a different sequence of 10 responses in a predetermined order using three keys of a numeric keypad. In the acquisition component, the subjects' task was to acquire a new se

Age-related differences in the role of explicit encoding instructions on verbal, visual and spatial Hebb learning.

Hebb repetition learning - the improved recall performance for repeated sequences compared to non-repeated sequences - is widely used as a laboratory measure of learning. Recent research has demonstrated that awareness of the repeated sequence enhances learning, although there is reason to believe that older adults may not benefit from such foreknowledge in the same way as younger adults. In three experiments, we systematically investigated the role of foreknowledge in younger and older adults, across verbal, visual and spatial Hebb repetition learning. Each experiment employed a serial recall

Is a procedural learning deficit a causal risk factor for developmental language disorder or dyslexia? A meta-analytic review.

Impaired procedural learning has been suggested as a possible cause of developmental dyslexia (DD) and developmental language disorder (DLD). We evaluate this theory by performing a series of meta-analyses on evidence from the six procedural learning tasks that have most commonly been used to test this theory: the serial reaction time, Hebb learning, artificial grammar and statistical learning, weather prediction, and contextual cuing tasks. Studies using serial reaction time and Hebb learning tasks yielded small group deficits in comparisons between language impaired and typically developing

Operant-based instrumental learning for analysis of genetically modified models of Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease is the result of an expanded CAG repeat in the gene that codes for the protein huntingtin and results in a progressive sequelae of motor, cognitive and psychiatric symptoms. The development of genetically modified rodent models of Huntington's disease has led to the need for sensitive behavioural phenotyping. Operant tests for rodents have been developed that can determine the functional deficits in these genetically modified models, from motor, cognitive and emotional domains. The current review discusses tests that employ operant equipment, an automated and highly flexib

Reduced attentional capacity, but normal processing speed and shifting of attention in developmental dyslexia: evidence from a serial task.

We report the performance of a group of adult dyslexics and matched controls in an array-matching task where two strings of either consonants or symbols are presented side by side and have to be judged to be the same or different. The arrays may differ either in the order or identity of two adjacent characters. This task does not require naming - which has been argued to be the cause of dyslexics' difficulty in processing visual arrays - but, instead, has a strong serial component as demonstrated by the fact that, in both groups, Reaction times (RTs) increase monotonically with position of a m

Implicit sequence learning in dyslexia: a within-sequence comparison of first- and higher-order information.

The present study examines implicit sequence learning in adult dyslexics with a focus on comparing sequence transitions with different statistical complexities. Learning of a 12-item deterministic sequence was assessed in 12 dyslexic and 12 non-dyslexic university students. Both groups showed equivalent standard reaction time increments when the sequence was unexpectedly changed, suggesting that learning of the sequence took place. However, a novel analysis comparing transitions of differing complexity within the learning blocks indicated that dyslexic participants were impaired only for highe

A sequence learning impairment in dyslexia? It depends on the task.

Language acquisition is argued to be dependent upon an individuals' sensitivity to serial-order regularities in the environment (sequential learning), and impairments in reading and spelling in dyslexia have recently been attributed to a deficit in sequential learning. The present study examined the learning and consolidation of sequential knowledge in 30 adults with dyslexia and 29 typical adults matched on age and nonverbal ability using two tasks previously reported to be sensitive to a sequence learning deficit. Both groups showed evidence of sequential learning and consolidation on a seri

Working memory in learning disability subgroups.

The purpose of this study was to investigate (a) the degree to which working memory differences between learning-disabled and nondisabled children reflect a specific or generalized deficit, and (b) whether limitations in the enhancement of learning-disabled student's working memory performance are attributable to process or storage functions. To this end, performances of reading-disabled, math-disabled, chronological age (CA)-matched, and achievement-matched children were compared on verbal and visual-spatial working memory measures under initial, gain, and maintenance conditions. Medial frontal negativities predict performance improvements during motor sequence but not motor adaptation learning.

Alterations in our environment require us to learn or alter motor skills to remain efficient. Also, damage or injury may require the relearning of motor skills. Two types have been identified: movement adaptation and motor sequence learning. Doyonet al. (2003, Distinct contribution of the cortico-striatal and cortico-cerebellar systems to motor skill learning. Neuropsychologia, 41(3), 252-262) proposed a model to explain the neural mechanisms related to adaptation (cortico-cerebellar) and motor sequence learning (cortico-striatum) tasks. We hypothesized that medial frontal negativities (MFNs),

D2 receptors and cognitive flexibility in marmosets: tri-phasic dose-response effects of intra-striatal quinpirole on serial reversal performance.

Behavioral flexibility, which allows organisms to adapt their actions in response to environmental changes, is impaired in a number of neuropsychiatric conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder and addiction. Studies in human subjects and monkeys have reported correlations between individual differences in dopamine D2-type receptor (D2R) levels in the caudate nucleus and performance in a discrimination reversal task, in which established contingent relationships between abstract stimuli and rewards (or punishments) are reversed. Global genetic deletion of the D2R in mice disrupts rev

Neurocognitive functioning in bulimia nervosa: the role of neuroendocrine, personality and clinical aspects.

BACKGROUND: Studies investigating neurocognitive impairment in subjects with eating disorders (EDs) have reported heterogeneous patterns of impairment and, in some instances, no dysfunction. The present study aimed to define the pattern of neurocognitive impairment in a large sample of bulimia nervosa (BN) patients and to demonstrate that neuroendocrine, personality and clinical characteristics influence neurocognitive performance in BN. METHOD: Attention/immediate memory, set shifting, perseveration, conditional and implicit learning were evaluated in 83 untreated female patients with BN and

Reversible second-order conditional sequences in incidental sequence learning tasks.

In sequence learning tasks, participants' sensitivity to the sequential structure of a series of events often overshoots their ability to express relevant knowledge intentionally, as in generation tasks that require participants to produce either the next element of a sequence (inclusion) or a different element (exclusion). Comparing generation performance under inclusion and exclusion conditions makes it possible to assess the respective influences of conscious and unconscious learning. Recently, two main concerns have been expressed concerning such tasks. First, it is often difficult to desi

Neurocognitive contributions to motor skill learning: the role of working memory.

Researchers have begun to delineate the precise nature and neural correlates of the cognitive processes that contribute to motor skill learning. The authors review recent work from their laboratory designed to further understand the neurocognitive mechanisms of skill acquisition. The authors have demonstrated an important role for spatial working memory in 2 different types of motor skill learning, sensorimotor adaptation and motor sequence learning. They have shown that individual differences in spatial working memory capacity predict the rate of motor learning for sensorimotor adaptation and
