OBJECTIVE: Serotonin syndrome (SS) is an iatrogenic life-threatening condition caused by serotonergic agents. The treatment for SS involves the administration of a serotonin antagonist (cyproheptadine). However, the dosing schedule for cyproheptadine is not uniform in the literature.
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 23 adult patients (>18 years) admitted to the Neurology Department and met the Hunter criteria for SS.
RESULTS: The mean age was 35.2 years, and 52% were female. Ten patients were managed in the intensive care unit (ICU), whereas thirteen patients were admitted to the ward.

SOX1 antibody is an autoimmune antibody, usually associated with Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome, paraneoplastic conditions, and encephalitis. This antibody has also been found among psychiatric patients. However, the role of SOX1 antibody in serotonin syndrome has not yet been defined, as a literature search yielded no results. Therefore, the treatment as such has unknown clinical significance. In this case study, we report a patient with SOX1 antibodies and altered mental status out of proportion to serotonin syndrome whose symptoms improved with simultaneous treatment of both conditions.

The serotonin syndrome is a potentially deadly complication resulting from drug adverse effect, drug-drug interaction or overdose involving one or more serotonergic molecules, e.g., antidepressants, psychostimulants and sometimes an "ignored" serotonergic compound. The serotonin syndrome typically consists of a clinical triad including cognitive/behavioral, neurovegetative and neuromuscular features. However, this syndrome is characterized by major clinical heterogeneity, making the diagnosis difficult in practice. Moreover, many practitioners are quite unaware of this syndrome. Available scor

A 65-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital for cellulitis. She had a history of diabetes mellitus and parkinsonism on levodopa/carbidopa, rasagiline, ropinirole, trihexyphenidyl, amantadine, metformin, and glipizide. We present here a case of rare incidence of serotonin syndrome associated with linezolid and rasagiline.

A late preterm presented with tachypnoea, jitteriness, irritability and low grade fever. Blood gas showed a compensated metabolic acidosis. His mother was taking the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) fluoxetine, 60 mg/day, and he was exclusively breast-fed. The baby's serum level of fluoxetine on day 8 was within the adult therapeutic range and his symptoms were ascribed to fluoxetine toxicity. On changing to formula feeds, his symptoms resolved. SSRIs are commonly administered during pregnancy, but SSRI toxicity in infants is rarely reported. It is possible that this condition is

BACKGROUND: Serotonin syndrome is a potentially life-threatening adverse drug reaction that results from therapeutic drug use, usually of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), intentional excessive use or interactions between various drugs.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old Caucasian boy presented to our emergency department (ED) with alteration in his mental status for 6 h prior to arrival. On physical examination in our ED, he was combative and disoriented to time, place and person. He was febrile, hypertensive and tachycardic as well. He had intermittent rigid extremities with my

Serotonin syndrome is a potentially life-threatening condition caused by excessive serotonergic activity in the nervous system. It is characterized by mental status changes, autonomic instability, and neuromuscular hyperactivity. Most reported cases of serotonin syndrome are in patients using multiple serotonergic drugs or who have had considerable exposure to a single serotonin-augmenting drug. Diagnosis is made using the Hunter Serotonin Toxicity Criteria, which require the presence of one of the following classical features or groups of features: spontaneous clonus; inducible clonus with ag

We describe a case of severe serotonin syndrome. The patient was simultaneously taking the atypical antidepressant olanzapine and a tricyclical antidepressant, clomipramine. Symptoms included altered mental state resulting in coma, myoclonus, hyperreflexia, diaphoresis, diarrhoea, disorientation and fever. After suspension of antidepressant drugs, intensive symptomatic treatment and administration of biperiden and cyproheptadine, the patient's condition improved.

Between 1085 and 1927, epidemics of "convulsive ergotism" were widespread east of the Rhine in Europe due to consumption of grain contaminated with ergot, which is produced by the fungus Claviceps purpurea. West of the Rhine, consumption of ergot-contaminated food caused epidemics of gangrenous ergotism. The clinical features of convulsive ergotism--muscle twitching and spasms, changes in mental state, hallucinations, sweating, and fever lasting for several weeks--suggest serotonergic overstimulation of the CNS (ie, the serotonin syndrome). The ergot alkaloids are serotonin agonists. Dihydroer

The preeclampsia-eclampsia syndrome is a severe complication of the third trimester of pregnancy and represents the first cause of maternal death. It is mainly characterized by: weight increase, proteinuria and hypertension and can evolve with convulsions and maternal death. The etiology still remains unknown although a series of events have been identified, starting with endothelial damage and local vasoconstriction leading to hypertension. These events occur at first locally in the placental district and become generalized. This paper reports experimental and clinical data in order to demons

Serotonin syndrome (SS) is a drug-induced clinical syndrome, characterised by a triad of cognitive impairment, autonomic hyperactivity and neuromuscular abnormalities. Hypertension, one of the common autonomic manifestations in SS, may lead to lead to several life-threatening conditions. Herein, we report a case of SS who had posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) because of high blood pressure.A young male with a 5-month history of chronic tension-type headache and depression had been receiving amitriptyline and paroxetine. Increment of paroxetine led to the development of variou

UNLABELLED: Metaxalone has only recently been associated with serotonin syndrome. The mechanism of action of this centrally acting muscle relaxant is unknown; however, the observation of serotonin syndrome in patients with metaxalone overdose suggests a role in the serotonergic pathway.
CASE REPORT: (Case 1) A 29-year-old woman with overdose of metaxalone presented to the emergency department with altered mental status, seizure-like activity, hyperthermia, rigidity in the lower extremities, myoclonus, and hyperreflexia. Vital signs on arrival include blood pressure of 168/80 mmHg, heart rate

BACKGROUND: Serotonin syndrome is a potentially life-threatening adverse drug reaction that most commonly results from adverse interactions between drugs. Because serotonin syndrome can be fatal and is often difficult to diagnose, it is vital for health professionals to know about this reaction. We report a typical case of transient serotonin syndrome secondary to tramadol-Citalopram combination. This case report highlights the value of awareness of the early and subtle signs of serotonin syndrome.
CASE REPORT: A 44-year-old female with past medical history of chronic pancreatitis, back pain,

Serotonin syndrome is a rare, life-threatening toxidrome caused by serotonergic agents. This syndrome classically presents with a combination of mental status changes, autonomic hyperactivity, and neuromuscular abnormalities. However, diagnosing the condition is difficult because of its variable symptoms at presentation. As a result, serotonin syndrome often is underreported, making it harder to understand, recognize, and treat. Patients with this condition may present to primary or urgent care or an ED, and may become acutely symptomatic during an inpatient admission. Clinicians must be able

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia is a clinically well-defined chronic condition with a biopsychosocial aetiology. Fibromyalgia is characterized by chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain, sleep problems, cognitive dysfunction, and fatigue. Patients often report high disability levels and poor quality of life. Since there is no specific treatment that alters the pathogenesis of fibromyalgia, drug therapy focuses on pain reduction and improvement of other aversive symptoms.
OBJECTIVES: The objective was to assess the benefits and harms of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in the treatment

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a common cause of physical, psychological and social problems in women of reproductive age. The key characteristic of PMS is the timing of symptoms, which occur only during the two weeks leading up to menstruation (the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle). Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are increasingly used as first line therapy for PMS. SSRIs can be taken either in the luteal phase or else continuously (every day). SSRIs are generally considered to be effective for reducing premenstrual symptoms but they can cause adverse effects.

OBJECTIVE: To document a case of serotonin syndrome (SS) associated with mirtazapine monotherapy, review the previously reported cases of SS associated with this tetracyclic antidepressant, and discuss the possible pathogenic mechanisms leading to this serious adverse drug reaction.
CASE SUMMARY: A 75-year-old man developed agitation, confusion, incoordination, and gait disturbance because of progressive rigidity. Mirtazapine had been started 8 days earlier to control major depression. Physical examination revealed diaphoresis, low-grade fever, hypertension, tachycardia, bilateral cogwheel ri
