First case of Serratia liquefaciens isolated from urinary tract infection in sows and associated clinicopathological and pathological findings.

An incident of sudden deaths in the breeding stock was reported from a farrow-to-finish commercial pig farm in Greece. The 8·4% of sows during lactation and gestation period presented anorexia, fever, haematuria, return-to-oestrus and sudden deaths (mortality rate: 2·3%). Blood and urine samples were collected from four diseased sows. Furthermore, swabs from urine bladders were collected from two dead sows and four culled sows at the slaughterhouse. Blood testing demonstrated mild leucocytosis and absence of azotaemia. Urinalysis revealed haematuria, proteinuria, bilirubinuria and active urine

A multistate outbreak of Serratia marcescens bloodstream infection associated with contaminated intravenous magnesium sulfate from a compounding pharmacy.

BACKGROUND: In contrast to pharmaceutical manufacturers, compounding pharmacies adhere to different quality-control standards, which may increase the likelihood of undetected outbreaks. In 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention received reports of cases of Serratia marcescens bloodstream infection occurring in patients who underwent cardiac surgical procedures in Los Angeles, California, and in New Jersey. An investigation was initiated to determine whether there was a common underlying cause. METHODS: A matched case-control study was conducted in Los Angeles. Case record review

First case of infective endocarditis due to NDM-type carbapenemase-producing Serratia marcescens in a preterm infant: a case report.

Serratia marcescens (S. marcescens) is a Gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family, commonly found in various environments. This opportunistic pathogen can cause urinary tract infections, respiratory infections and septicaemia, but endocarditis is particularly rare and concerning due to its rapid and devastating progression. We report the first documented case worldwide of infective endocarditis (IE) caused by S. marcescens producing NDM-type carbapenemase, and the second reported case of S. marcescens endocarditis in a preterm infant. The patient was a pret

Emergence of carbapenem-resistant Serratia marcescens co-harboring blaNDM-1, blaKPC-2, and blaSRT-2 in bloodstream infection.

Serratia marcescens is an emerging opportunistic pathogen with high genetic diversity. The emergence and prevalence of carbapenem-resistant S. marcescens poses a major health threat due to its intrinsic resistance to multiple antibiotics, which severely restricts the selection and treatment of antibiotics for S. marcescens infection. This study presents the first documented case in China of a bloodstream infection caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis and S. marcescens strain (designated S96) co-producing blaNDM-1, blaKPC-2, and blaSRT-2. Strain S96 exhibited resistance to nearly all categories

Exploring the Anti-quorum Sensing and Antibiofilm Efficacy of Phytol against Serratia marcescens Associated Acute Pyelonephritis Infection in Wistar Rats.

Quorum Sensing (QS) mechanism, a bacterial density-dependent gene expression system, governs the Serratia marcescens pathogenesis through the production of virulence factors and biofilm formation. The present study demonstrates the anti-quorum sensing (anti-QS), antibiofilm potential and in vivo protective effect of phytol, a diterpene alcohol broadly utilized as food additive and in therapeutics fields. In vitro treatment of phytol (5 and 10 μg/ml) showed decreasing level of biofilm formation, lipase and hemolysin production in S. marcescens compared to their respective controls. More, micros

Bacterial-Mediated Induced Resistance in Cucumber: Beneficial Effect of the Endophytic Bacterium Serratia plymuthica on the Protection Against Infection by Pythium ultimum.

ABSTRACT The potential of the endophytic bacterium Serratia plymuthica strain R1GC4 in stimulating defense reactions in cucumber (Cucumis sativus) seedlings inoculated with the soilborne pathogen Pythium ultimum was explored at the cellular level. Bacterial treatment prior to Pythium inoculation resulted in less seedling disease development as compared with that in nontreated control plants, in which typical root symptoms were visible by 3 days after inoculation with the pathogen. Histological investigations of root samples revealed striking differences in the extent of plant defense reactions

Use of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis typing to study an outbreak of infection due to Serratia marcescens in a neonatal intensive care unit.

Serratia marcescens is a well-known cause of nosocomial infections and outbreaks, particularly in critically ill neonates and immunocompromised patients. Numerous methods have been proposed for typing. We used pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) typing to analyze an outbreak in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). We included 23 patient isolates from an outbreak (March to July 1995), and 10 patient isolates from different wards during the same time period. PFGE of whole-cell DNA digested by SpeI was used as a marker of strain identity. The most common presentation of the infection was se

In vivo evolution of resistance to contemporary β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combinations during treatment of a KPC-producing Serratia marcescens infection.

Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemases (KPCs) are a family of serine β-lactamases that confer broad antibiotic resistance by hydrolyzing virtually all β-lactam (BL) agents. Contemporary β-lactamase inhibitors (BLIs) such as avibactam were developed to neutralize the activity of KPCs and other clinically important carbapenemases. Ceftazidime-avibactam (CZA), a BL/BLI combination in which the cephalosporin ceftazidime is protected from KPC-mediated hydrolysis, demonstrated improved outcomes in early clinical use. However, CZA-resistant isolates soon emerged. Herein, we describe a challenging clini

Using ceftazidime-avibactam for persistent carbapenem-resistant Serratia marcescens infection highlights antimicrobial stewardship challenges with new beta-lactam-inhibitor combination antibiotics.

The newer beta-lactam-inhibitor combination (BLIC) antibiotics are available in South Africa (SA) for the treatment of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales infections. We describe the successful use of ceftazidime-avibactam (CA) for the treatment of a child with persistent carbapenem-resistant Serratia marcescens bacteraemia, and the challenges faced using this lifesaving antibiotic, including access to susceptibility testing, procurement process, cost and complexity of deciding when, how and for how long to use it. Furthermore, the burden of carbapenem resistance is increasing in SA, and ina

[Fistulous pyoderma caused by Serratia liquefaciens].

Human infections with Serratia liquefaciens are rare. We therefore present a patient with fistulous pyoderma due to this pathogen. The success of the therapy of Serratia infections depends on determination of the resistance and sensitivity to antibiotics. Following the tentative diagnosis of dermal tuberculosis, histological, microbiological and X-ray examinations were performed. Serratia liquefaciens was identified by culture as the only cause of the skin lesions. After therapy with sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim, the lesions disappeared.
