Telemetric monitoring of penile pressure during mating in rats after chronic spinal cord injury.

In men with a spinal cord injury (SCI), erectile function, ejaculation, and fertility are severely impaired. The present study utilized a telemetric pressure transducer implanted into the corpus cavernosum of the penis to examine sexual function during awake mating behavior in a rat contusion model with a range of Infinite Horizon Impactor forces distributed between 150 and 215 kdyn. The mating behavior paradigm included examination of the counts, average pressure, and average duration for mounts, intromissions, and ejaculations. Male Wistar rats were mated with receptive females in 30-min ses

Adult partner preference and sexual behavior of male rats exposed prenatally to betamethasone.

The aim of this study was to investigate long-term effects of prenatal betamethasone exposure on sexual partner preference, testosterone level, and sexual behavior. Pregnant rats received 0.1 mg/kg of betamethasone or saline on the 12th, 13th, 18th, and 19th days of pregnancy. Parameters in male offspring were evaluated at 90 days of age. Male rats from the betamethasone group did not show any difference in sexual partner preference as expressed by the total number of visits to the female or male zone. However, these males spent significantly less total time and shorter duration per visit in t

Cellular evolution of the hypothalamic preoptic area of behaviorally divergent deer mice.

Genetic variation is known to contribute to the variation of animal social behavior, but the molecular mechanisms that lead to behavioral differences are still not fully understood. Here, we investigate the cellular evolution of the hypothalamic preoptic area (POA), a brain region that plays a critical role in social behavior, across two sister species of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus and P. polionotus) with divergent social systems. These two species exhibit large differences in mating and parental care behavior across species and sex. Using single-nucleus RNA-sequencing, we build a cellu

Effect of methamphetamine exposure on sexual behavior and locomotor activity of adult male rats.

Drug addiction and its consequences on social life and behavior is currently a worldwide problem. Methamphetamine (MA) is one of the most abused psychostimulants in the Czech Republic. MA elevates mood, increases concentration, reduces appetite, and promotes weight loss. However, high doses and long-term abuse can induce psychosis, hallucinations, paranoia, violent behavior, and can lead to cardiovascular problems. Regarding its high prevalence and negative impact on health and social life, MA needs to be fully investigated. Previous studies have demonstrated the impairing effect of MA drug ab

Chronic Maternal Tobacco Smoke Exposure and/or Alpha-Lipoic Acid Treatment Causes Long-Term Deterioration of Testis and Sexual Behavior in Adult Male Rats.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use during pregnancy is known to have several negative effects on the offspring's reproductive health in the long term. The use of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) as a dietary supplement during pregnancy has increased greatly in recent years and has been known to have positive effects on various pregnancy outcomes including miscarriage, diabetic embryopathy, preterm delivery, and congenital malformations. AIM: To evaluate the effects of tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) on sexual behavior, reproductive parameters, and testicles in adult male rats and to reveal the possible role of ALA

Prenatal Hypoxia Ischemia Increases Male Rat Sexual Behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Research consistently indicates an association between prenatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) and mortality and chronic neurological diseases in newborns. HI can cause permanent effects, including mental retardation, motor impairment, learning disabilities, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy. Moreover, little is known about the relationship between HI and sexual behavior. AIMS: The aims of this study are to examine whether HI is associated with changes in sexual behavior. METHODS: HI was induced by clamping the uterine arteries of pregnant rats. The arteries were clamped for 45 minutes on th

Animal models of ejaculatory behavior.

Premature ejaculation is generally regarded the most frequent male ejaculatory complaint and has been considered a psychosexual disorder with psychogenic aetiology. The efficacy of various antidepressants, however, to delay ejaculation in men and to pharmacologically treat premature ejaculation suggests a strong neurobiological involvement. Most of our current understanding of the neurobiology and neuroanatomy of sexual behavior and ejaculatory function has been derived from preclinical studies using several laboratory species. In the present paper we will review the various animal models that

Neural pathways and central sites involved in penile erection: neuroanatomy and clinical implications.

Penile erection occurs in response to tactile, visual, and imaginative stimuli in humans. In animals olfactory and auditory cues are particularly important. The participation of multiple sites with the brain and spinal cord, and coordination of somatic and autonomic pathways make sexual behavior in general, and erection in particular, vulnerable to neurologic injury and disease. Sites within the brain and spinal cord act in concert to process, coordinate, then distribute the neural inputs necessary for sexual behavior including erection. Activation of neurons in some of these regions either ph

Neural substrates for regulating self-grooming behavior in rodents.

Grooming, as an evolutionarily conserved repetitive behavior, is common in various animals, including humans, and serves essential functions including, but not limited to, hygiene maintenance, thermoregulation, de-arousal, stress reduction, and social behaviors. In rodents, grooming involves a patterned and sequenced structure, known as the syntactic chain with four phases that comprise repeated stereotyped movements happening in a cephalocaudal progression style, beginning from the nose to the face, to the head, and finally ending with body licking. The context-dependent occurrence of groomin

Effects of pinealectomy and continuous light on mating behavior of male rats.

The role of pinealectomy and continuous light in the regulation of sexual activity was studied in the male rat. The parameters studied in order to evaluate the sexual behavior were initial latency, ejaculatory latency, refractory period, neuromotor activity, number of ejaculations, intromissions (false, real, and total) and percentage of ejaculating male rats. Pinealectomy as well as continuous light induced a marked facilitation of the animal's sexual behavior as shown by the shorter initial latency and refractory period, as well as by the increase in the number of intromissions (real and tot

Social interaction analysis in captive orcas (Orcinus orca).

The management of socially complex species in captivity is challenging. Research on their social behavior improves our understanding of interactions in captive animals and captive-group management. We conducted a detailed analysis of social relationships shown by the orcas kept at Loro Parque zoo and their tendency to reconcile after aggressive episodes. Affiliative interactions were the most frequent social activities compared to agonistic or sexual interactions. Within affiliative behaviors, we documented the pattern "gentle tongue bite", where an animal touches the other's tongue with his t

Kisspeptin, c-Fos and CRFR type 2 expression in the preoptic area and mediobasal hypothalamus during the follicular phase of intact ewes, and alteration after LPS.

Increasing estradiol concentrations during the late follicular phase stimulate sexual behavior and the GnRH/LH surge, and it is known that kisspeptin signaling is essential for the latter. Administration of LPS can block these events, but the mechanism involved is unclear. We examined brain tissue from intact ewes to determine: i) which regions are activated with respect to sexual behavior, the LH surge and LPS administration, ii) the location and activation pattern of kisspeptin cells in control and LPS treated animals, and iii) whether CRFR type 2 is involved in such disruptive mechanisms. The 26S proteasome participates in the sequential inhibition of estrous behavior induced by progesterone in rats.

Estrous behavior induced by progesterone (P) treatment of estradiol-primed rats is followed by a period in which females do not respond behaviorally to a second administration of P [sequential inhibition (SI)]. SI is thought to involve P-dependent down-regulation of hypothalamic P receptor (PR) content. This study tested the hypothesis that the 26S proteasome participates in the regulation of SI and brain PR content in female rats. Ovariectomized, estrogen-primed (estradiol benzoate, 2 microg s.c.) adult rats were injected with P (1 mg s.c.) alone or P with the proteasome inhibitors Z-Ile-Glu

Endocannabinoids mediate the effects of acute stress and corticosterone on sex behavior.

For animals in the wild, survival depends on being able to detect and respond rapidly to danger by switching from risky (e.g. conspicuous courtship) to survival-oriented behaviors. Very little is known about the hormonal or neuroendocrine mechanisms that control the rapid switch in behavioral state that occurs when an animal detects threats or other stressors. Prior studies with rough-skinned newts (Taricha granulosa), an amphibian model, found that stress-induced suppression of male sexual behaviors (amplectic clasping) involves corticosterone (CORT) and that this steroid hormone uses a novel

Effects of intra-nasally administered testosterone on sexual proceptive behavior in female capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella).

Sexual dysfunction in the female has been associated with a decrease in androgen levels, which can be reversed by testosterone treatment, however, bearing the risk of adverse side effects. Nasally administered testosterone could be an effective method for androgenic treatment avoiding the first-pass intestinal and hepatic metabolism and side effects. Here we examined the effects of chronic intranasal administration of testosterone on sexual behavior in female capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) that lived with male cohorts. During 8 days of baseline 10 females were observed for their sexual and no

Workshop on perinatal exposure to dioxin-like compounds. II. Reproductive effects.

This summary report focuses on current studies on reproductive effects reported at the workshop on Perinatal Exposure to Dioxin-like Compounds and supporting data noted in the discussion. Recent laboratory studies have suggested that altered development (e.g., low birth weight, spontaneous abortion, congenital malformation) and reproductive health (e.g., fertility, sex organ development, reproductive behavior) may be among the most sensitive end points when examining the effects of dioxinlike compounds. Thus, future research should target the reproductive health of both males and females expos

Masculine sexual behavior features in the Flinders sensitive and resistant line rats.

The Flinders sensitive (FSL) and resistant (FRL) lines of rats have been selectively bred for their differences in cholinergic sensitivity. The FSL rats display hypersensitive responses to agonists of muscarinic receptors. In addition, the FSL rats display behavioral alterations that support the notion that this strain could be useful as an animal model of depression. These abnormalities include increase in rapid eye movement sleep, decrease of saccharin consumption after stress, and reduced exploratory behavior in a novel open field. On the other hand, sexual behavior is a pleasure-seeking be

Effect of androgens on the brain and other organs during development and aging.

Androgens have important biological effects on accessory sexual organs and have a broad range of effects on metabolic processes. Male hormones have been shown to have important organizational and activational effects on morphological, behavioral, and cognitive activity in experimental animals. Sexual dimorphic effects on cognitive and behavioral activities in animals have been linked to androgens during the fetal period. The effects of testosterone on sexual drive are well established in humans, although the threshold for such activity appears to be lower than that required for many of the oth

Perinatal maternal exposure to picrotoxin: effects on sexual behavior in female rat offspring.

A previous study in our laboratory showed that perinatal maternal picrotoxin exposure (0.75 mg/kg) in rats improved heterosexual behavior in male offspring. In the present study, we examined the effects of this maternal treatment on sexual behavior in the female offspring. The dams received 0.75 mg/kg picrotoxin treatment (PT) once a day on the 18th and 21st day of pregnancy, 2 h after parturition and once a day during the first 4 days of lactation. The results showed that (1) at birth, the body weight and anogenital distance were not modified by treatment; (2) female sexual behavior was impro
