While the pathophysiology of several psychiatric disorders has become modestly elucidated in the last decade, comorbid sexual dysfunctions in such patients are frequently left apart from clinical and research interest. We aimed to address the malfunctioning neurocircuitry underlying sexual dysfunctions in depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and mania. We performed a comprehensive literature review, addressing any combination of the topics of "neurobiology"/"neural", "sexual"/"desire"/"arousal"/"orgasm"/"ejaculation" and "depression"/"anxiety"/"schizophrenia"/"mania"/"bipolar". Altered neurotran

Human sexual function is complex and multidimensional, with physiologic and psychological components. The common sexual dysfunctions in men have significant overlap. Low sexual desire in men includes a lack of interest in thinking about sex or in being sexual, alone or with a partner. Sexual health counseling often is helpful. Physicians should prescribe supplemental testosterone only if it is clearly indicated. (Sexual dysfunction is an off-label use of testosterone.) Supplementation is not beneficial for men with a normal total testosterone level. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the consistent

UNLABELLED: Cancer remains a major global public health problem. A key aspect of cancer care among survivors is sexual health. Cancer patients experience a range of sexual dysfunctions, including erectile dysfunction, vaginal dryness, dyspareunia, and reduced libido. Psychological symptoms such as anxiety, fatigue, and body image issues often exacerbate these problems, leading to impaired emotional and relational functioning. Despite their profound impact on quality of life, these concerns are not systematically addressed in routine cancer care. Oncosexology fits into this context, addressing

Breast cancer (BC) diagnoses not only present physical challenges but profoundly affect survivors' psychosocial well-being leading to sexual health challenges. This clinical practice review aimed to discuss the current literature and outline the knowledge gaps related to care for sexual health after BC, including survivors' sexual health concerns, as well as available prospective surveillance programs. Current literature on the sexual health challenges of BC survivors was identified and sorted into contributing factors, treatments and interventions, and practice recommendations. This evidence

BACKGROUND: Approximately 26% of adult women in the United States suffer from female sexual arousal disorder (FSAD), yet little has been done to compare the experience of FSAD in pre- and postmenopausal women, which is critical to enhance the current understanding of FSAD and inform the development and assessment of treatment options for these patient populations.
AIM: To explore the experience of condition-associated symptoms and the relative importance of FSAD symptoms, including their severity, bother, and impact, on participants' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in pre- and postmeno

Physically, the vulva is an anatomic location of convergence, which includes vascular, neural, hormonal, reproductive, dermatologic, and musculoskeletal systems. Psychosocially, the vulva represents privacy, femininity, sexuality, and intimacy. Because of this intertwined relationship, vulvar disease and dysfunction can significantly impact a woman's physical health as well as her relationships. This article elucidates the impact of vulvar disease on the individual psyche, sexual functioning, and intimate relationships. Psychological concepts are explained, psychological interventions are revi

In the setting of multiple studies claiming a high prevalence of sexual problems amongst women, new conceptualisation of the sexual response in women and definitions of sexual dysfunction, which reflect the need for biopsychosocial management, are being developed. The biological underpinnings of the sexual response in women may be influenced by environmental factors, as well as by medications, disease processes and normative changes in endogenous hormones. Psychological factors can alter both the physiological processes and the experience of sexual response. The new models clarify the importan

Ten years of research that has provided data regarding the prevalence of sexual dysfunctions is reviewed. A thorough review of the literature identified 52 studies published in the 10 years since an earlier review by Spector and Carey (Arch. Sex. Behav. 19(4): 389-408, 1990). Community samples indicate a current prevalence of 0%-3% for male orgasmic disorder, 0%-5% for erectile disorder, and 0%-3% for male hypoactive sexual desire disorder. Pooling current and 1-year figures provides community prevalence estimates of 7%-10% for female orgasmic disorder and 4%-5% for premature ejaculation. Stab

The management of the male patient with sexual dysfunction (SD) requires special knowledge and abilities. Generally, SD is best approached from the physiologic perspective, keeping in mind that sexual functioning has important psychosocial dimensions. The history obtained from the patient and, if possible, from his partner should seek information not only on the SD, but also on coexisting neurologic or medical disorders. A list of drugs should be obtained, as many prescription drugs, even in low doses, can influence sexual function. The clinical examination, including sensory, motor, and refle

Pregnancy induces significant physiological and anatomical changes in a woman's body, which inevitably impact the sexual life of couples, leading to fluctuations in levels of desire and sexual satisfaction for both women and their partners. Sexual desire in pregnant women significantly decreases during the first trimester, increases during the second trimester, and declines again during the third trimester. Women report the lowest sexual desire during the first trimester, while their partners experience the lowest levels during the third trimester. Many couples completely abstain from sexual a

OBJECTIVE: To review the impact of uterine fibroids on women's sexual health and to highlight this often underreported aspect of clinical care.
METHODS: A narrative review of the literature on uterine fibroids and female sexual dysfunction.
RESULTS: Uterine fibroids are the most common benign uterine tumors, significantly impacting women's sexual health, yet this issue remains underreported in clinical practice. Symptomatic patients often suffer from heavy menstrual bleeding and progressive anemia, which reduces their overall quality of life and sexual desire. Factors such as severe dyspareu

This systematic review evaluates the impact of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) on sexual function and health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) in both men and women, from a biopsychosocial perspective. Diseases assessed include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis. A total of 42 studies were included following a systematic search in PubMed/MEDLINE. The review adhered to PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024518043). Results highlight a high prevalence of sexual dysfunction in IMID

INTRODUCTION: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic condition that associates pain, sleep disturbances, and cognitive changes. Recent evidence shows that sexual dysfunction is also associated with fibromyalgia, further affecting patients' quality of life.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to explore the association between FMS and sexual dysfunction (SD) in women.
METHODS: A comprehensive search strategy was carried out, using the keywords "fibromyalgia" and "sexual dysfunction" and their synonyms. The databases used were MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, Biomed Central, Web of Science, CINAHL, IBECS, LILACS

The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the prevalence of female sexual dysfunction in the Brazilian population. This is a systematic review conducted in July 2016 in which four databases were searched: MEDLINE/Pubmed, Scopus, LILACS, and Cinahl. Two investigators extracted the primary data, which were fully analyzed, and applied the inclusion/exclusion criteria. The search found 113 results, and 20 of them compounded the scope of this study. Only four of the studies showed good methodology quality. The main diagnostics criteria used were validated questionnaires specific for sexua

This chapter discusses the all too common problem of sex-related pain in women. Pain is a complex perceptive experience, involving biologic as well as psychologic and relational meanings. They become increasingly important with the chronicity of pain. Neurologists are quite aware of the painful aspect of many neurologic disorders, but lifelong and acquired genital and sexual pain is still neglected in a consistent percentage of women. One reason is the view - still held by many - that psychologic factors play the most important role in sex-related pain complaints. The consequences of diagnosti

INTRODUCTION: Premature ejaculation (PE) is a prevalent, yet often underdiagnosed, sexual disorder that affects men of all ages. Identification of PE is hampered by stigma and embarrassment associated with the condition, and limited awareness that it is treatable. Because diagnosis informs treatment decisions that have an impact on clinical outcomes, the ability to diagnose PE accurately is vital to the successful management of this condition.
AIM: Provide an overview of how to evaluate and diagnose PE.
METHODS: Review of the literature.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The taxonomy of PE based on on

Sexual problems such as dyspareunia and decreased sexual desire are common after the menopause. Hypoactive sexual desire disorder is the diagnostic category applied to many women with loss or lack of sexual interest or desire. The principal components of assessment for sexual dysfunction in menopausal women are: a general, gynaecological, obstetric, psychiatric, psychosexual and relationship history; use of self-report questionnaires; physical examination; and hormonal evaluation. The use of low-dose vaginal estrogen tablets, rings, creams or pessaries may help to improve local genital respons

INTRODUCTION: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been identified as a potent risk factor for sexual dysfunction. Certain characteristics of the abuse experience, such as repeated abuse, appear to affect the risk of developing sexual dysfunction. Despite the robust findings that CSA can be detrimental to sexual function, there is little consensus on the exact mechanisms that lead to these difficulties.
AIM: To summarize the most up-to-date research on the relation between CSA and women's sexual function.
METHODS: The published literature examining the prevalence of sexual dysfunction among wome
