Sexual dysfunction in women with epilepsy.

Sexual dysfunction in women with epilepsy (WWE) is an important comorbidity. A significant minority of WWE have markedly decreased sexual interest and it appears that orgasmic dysfunction occurs more frequently in WWE than in control women. Enzyme-inducing antiepileptic drugs can adversely affect sexual functioning by decreasing bioactive testosterone levels. Temporal lobe epilepsy of right-sided versus left-sided origin may also be a risk factor for sexual dysfunction. In addition to these factors, emerging evidence suggests that the serotonin transporter protein is related to temporal lobe e

Top 50 most cited articles about female sexual dysfunction: a bibliometric analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) consists of low libido, sexual arousal problems, anorgasmia, and dyspareunia. Sexual function is an important aspect of life for many women and is closely correlated with overall well-being. FSD is often underrepresented in the academic space when compared with male sexual disorders, such as erectile dysfunction. As FSD spans many fields (eg, urology, gynecology, psychology), bibliometric analyses are an important resource to highlight landmark articles. OBJECTIVES: To identify key articles about FSD by citation number and bibliometric analysis to

Sex and perimenopause.

BACKGROUND: Sexual difficulties are common across the female lifespan, increasing at midlife. Although changing hormone levels at menopause may contribute to the development of female sexual dysfunction, other factors, including relationship issues; psychological wellbeing; physical wellbeing; and medication use, such as antidepressants, need to be taken into consideration. The most common sexual difficulties reported by women across the perimenopause include dyspareunia, diminished desire, arousal capacity and difficulty in achieving orgasm. OBJECTIVE: This article summarises female sexual d

Care of women in menopause: sexual function, dysfunction and therapeutic modalities.

INTRODUCTION: The physiological changes that occur in menopause alter sexual function and affect well-being. Hormonal changes contribute significantly to reduced sexual function in older women and sexual dysfunction may well be amenable to treatment with exogenous hormones or other agents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Relevant clinical studies were identified by a computerised literature search. The collated data were presented to fellow gynaecologists for review, analysis of results and discussion in a series of meetings dedicated to finding the best evidence in menopause management. The evidence

Who seeks sex therapy? Sexual dysfunction prevalence and correlates, and help-seeking among clinical and community samples.

Sexual dysfunctions (SD; e.g., female sexual interest/arousal disorder, erectile disorder, female orgasmic disorder, delayed ejaculation, genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder, etc.) affect up to a third of individuals, impairing sexuality, intimate relationships, and mental health. This study aimed to compare the prevalence of SDs and their sexual, relational, and psychological correlates between a sample of adults consulting in sex therapy (n = 963) and a community-based sample (n = 1,891), as well as examine barriers to sexual health services for SD and the characteristics of individuals

Sexual sequelae of general medical disorders.

That sexual symptoms can signal serious underlying disease confirms the importance of sexual enquiry as an integral component of medical assessment. Data on sexual function are sparse in some medical specialties. However, increased scientific understanding of the central and peripheral physiology of sexual response could help to identify the pathophysiology of sexual dysfunction from disease and medical interventions, and also to ameliorate or prevent some dysfunctions. Many common general medical disorders have negative effects on desire, arousal, orgasm, ejaculation, and freedom from pain du

Female Orgasmic Disorder: How Far We Have [Not] Come?

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The female orgasm is a complex physiological and psychological response essential for sexual well-being and overall health. Historically misinterpreted, its significance is now better understood through modern research integrating neurobiological, hormonal, and psychological factors. Female orgasmic disorder (FOD), characterized by persistent difficulty in achieving orgasm, significantly affects emotional and relational well-being. This review summarizes current knowledge on the female orgasm, its dysfunction, and treatment modalities. METHODS: A comprehensive lit

Orgasmic Disorders.

AIM: To describe orgasm disorders in women. RESULTS: Orgasmic problems are prevalent in women, and many experience distress related to the condition. The problem often co-exist with other sexual disorders and can be caused by many biopsychocial factors. A comprehensive assessment focusing on biopsychosocial factors contributing to the orgasmic problem is necessary. This includes a sexological, medical, and psychological history. Treatment should include cognitive and behavioral interventions, which may include the partner. No pharmacological treatment is approved to treat orgasmic disorders i

[Current situation in the diagnosis and treatment of premature ejaculation].

As one of the most common complaints in clinical setting, premature ejaculation (PE) is characterized by a very short intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT), the inability to control or delay ejaculation and negative consequences (bother/distress). At present time, there is no universally accepted definition of PE, and the focus of the controversy on its definition is how to quantify IELT. A new proposal distinguishes PE into 4 categories: lifelong PE, acquired PE, natural variable PE and premature-like ejaculatory dysfunction. The difference in the underlying pathophysiology and etiolog

Sexual dysfunction, Part I: Classification, etiology, and pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: The sexual dysfunctions are extremely common but are rarely recognized by primary care physicians. They represent inhibitions in the appetitive or psychophysiologic changes that characterize the complete adult sexual response and are classified into four major categories: (1) sexual desire disorders (hypoactive sexual desire, sexual aversion disorder), (2) sexual arousal disorders (female sexual arousal disorder, male erectile dysfunction), (3) orgasmic disorders (inhibited male or female orgasm, premature ejaculation), and (4) sexual pain disorders (dyspareunia, vaginismus). Examining sexual functioning and disgust in virtual reality: Low sexual interest/arousal and sexual pain moderate disgust toward sexual stimuli.

Sexual dysfunctions are highly prevalent, affecting up to one-third of the adult population and significantly impacting mental well-being and intimate relationships. Virtual reality (VR) offers a promising and ecologically valid tool for studying psychological disorders; however, its application to research on sexual functioning remains underdeveloped. Sexual disgust is positively associated with sexual dysfunction symptoms, yet existing research remains scarce and has relied primarily on retrospective questionnaires and computer-based 2D erotic stimuli. This experimental study investigates wh

Dyspareunia: an integrated approach to assessment and diagnosis.

Dyspareunia, or painful intercourse, is frequently referred to as the most common female sexual dysfunction. It can occur singly or be manifested in combination with other psychosexual disorders. Diagnosis of dyspareunia is appropriate in cases in which the experience of pain is persistent and severe. There has been little agreement concerning the origin of dyspareunia. Organic conditions and psychological variables have alternately been presented as major factors in causality. There is a presumed high incidence of physical disease associated with dyspareunia when compared with other female se

Asexuality: what it is and why it matters.

In this review article, human asexuality, a relatively understudied phenomenon, is discussed. Specifically, definitions and conceptualizations of asexuality (e.g., is it a unique category of sexual orientation?), biological and historical contexts, identity issues, discrimination against asexual people relative to other minorities, origins, and variations, including gender differences, are reviewed. Whether asexuality should be construed as a disorder is also discussed. The study of asexuality allows for a better understanding of an underrecognized sexual minority but also affords a unique opp

Disorders related to sexuality and gender identity in the ICD-11: revising the ICD-10 classification based on current scientific evidence, best clinical practices, and human rights considerations.

In the World Health Organization's forthcoming eleventh revision of the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11), substantial changes have been proposed to the ICD-10 classification of mental and behavioural disorders related to sexuality and gender identity. These concern the following ICD-10 disorder groupings: F52 Sexual dysfunctions, not caused by organic disorder or disease; F64 Gender identity disorders; F65 Disorders of sexual preference; and F66 Psychological and behavioural disorders associated with sexual development and orientation. Changes have

[Research progress of sexual dysfunction following rectal cancer surgery].

Sexual dysfunction with the incidence of 5%-90% is a common postoperative complication of rectal cancer and the ratio of men and women is similar. Sexual function is innervated by the abdominal-pelvic autonomic nerve. Different sexual dysfunctions can be caused by different parts and degrees of injury in autonomic nerve during operations of rectal cancer. With the development of pelvic autonomic nerves preservation in rectal cancer radical resection, postoperative sexual function can be protected. There may be many factors increasing the incidence of postoperative sexual dysfunction in rectal
