The authors present a complex case of a 5-year-old child who was involved in a traffic accident as a pedestrian hit by a car and reported widespread injuries mostly extrinsic at the anal level, suspected sexual abuse. As reflected in the literature (1), about 1 in 4 children are victims of abuse in their lifetime, and anogenital injuries are included in the clinical signs of suspected sexual abuse. In fact, we learn from the 2023 (2) update on the interpretation of clinical signs in cases of suspected child sexual abuse that a perianal laceration with exposure of the tissues underlying the der

The relationship between functional seizures (FS) and sexual trauma has received attention in many previous studies. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship have not been elucidated yet. The purpose of this narrative review is to explore and speculate on the underpinning neurobiological mechanisms for the association and link between sexual trauma and functional seizures. While existence of a causal relationship between a history of sexual trauma and functional seizures is plausible, it should be viewed and treated as a hypothesis. In explaining this hypothesis, we can speculate t

OBJECTIVES: Sexual trauma poses a significant concern and is associated with heightened stress, negative health repercussions, and adverse economic effects. A history of abuse may increase a woman's risk of developing cancer, in particular cervical cancer. We analyzed the impact of screening for sexual abuse in a gynecologic oncology population.
METHODS: Patients were screened for sexual trauma in a gynecologic oncology clinic over 5 and a half years (April 1, 2011, to September 30, 2016) in this cohort study. The screening questions were selected by behavioral oncology physicians and integra

The rise of Freud's seduction theory can be illuminated by contextualising aspects of this theory with regard to nineteenth-century trauma theory, germ theory, degeneration theory and sexology. The author argues that Freud, by putting forth his seduction theory, defined himself within a number of registers that organised one's identity within the medical community in late nineteenth-century Vienna. Freud's first historical accounts of his rejection of the seduction theory also point to factors that were of great importance to his medical community, issues of epidemiology. However, in 1914 Freu

PURPOSE: Trauma has been associated with risky sexual behavior in diverse populations. However, little is known about this association among men and women veterans. This study hypothesized that 1) a history of trauma would be associated with risky sexual behavior among men and women veterans, 2) interpersonal trauma would predict risky sexual behavior among women, whereas noninterpersonal trauma would predict risky sexual behavior among men, and 3) military-related trauma would constitute additional risk. Using data from 567 women and 524 men veterans enrolled at the Veterans Health Administra

The researchers were invited to a transitional home for homeless women veterans to help veterans with body image issues. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 12 veterans who perceived they had a physical difference due to military service. Data were obtained in focus groups where the veterans were invited to share stories. Ricoeur's hermeneutic phenomenology guided the study. The research team learned early in the data collection stage that 11 of the 12 participants suffered military sexual trauma (MST). Three structures emerged in the data: (a) to speak up or not to speak, (b) from milita

With one in two women with HIV having a history of being sexually abused before age 18, it's become apparent that this risk factor needs to be addressed by HIV clinics and physicians. Women who have been sexually abused often have multiple social-behavioral problems, including injection drug use and depression, and their ability to adhere to HIV antiretroviral therapy may be dependent on whether their history of abuse is addressed through services and psychological care.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sexual trauma is associated with multiple negative health and social conditions, including compulsive sexual behavior. The present study examined network structures involving sexual trauma history, psychological distress (defined as depression and/or anxiety symptoms), substance use, transactional sex, and compulsive sexual behavior. Prior network analysis work in this area is limited.
METHODS: We drew upon two samples of young adults (Sample 1: n = 1,884, 69.3% women; Sample 2: n = 2,337, 69.7% women) recruited from universities in the United States in 2020-2022.

OBJECTIVES: Up to 70% of women service members in the United States report military sexual trauma (MST); many develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and co-occurring disorders. Trauma-informed yoga (TIY) is suggested to improve psychiatric symptoms and shown feasible and acceptable in emerging research, yet no work has evaluated TIY in MST survivors. The current quality improvement project aimed to examine TIY's feasibility, acceptability, and perceived effects in the context of MST.
DESIGN: Collective case series (N = 7).
SETTING: New England Vet Center.
INTERVENTIONS: Extant TIY pr

OBJECTIVE: Sexual minority adults report disproportionately higher rates of trauma exposure (including exposure to sexual minority-specific traumatic events) and frequent engagement in posttrauma reckless and self-destructive behaviors (RSDBs). However, research has yet to examine factors that may help explain the association between sexual minority-specific trauma exposure (i.e., sexual orientation-related victimization) and posttrauma RSDBs. The present study examined the roles of trauma symptoms due to discrimination (e.g., uncontrollable arousal, feelings of alienation) and emotion dysregu

Maltreatment is a risk factor for both sexual and non-sexual delinquency. Little is known about how specific forms of maltreatment relate to the distinct offending outcomes. Though trauma symptoms have been associated with maltreatment and delinquency, the intervening role of trauma symptoms in pathways from maltreatment to offending is not well understood. The goal of the current study was to test social learning and general strain theory explanations for sexual and non-sexual delinquency in adolescence, exploring trauma symptoms as a mediator between the four major types of maltreatment and

BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a significant risk factor for sexual difficulties in adulthood.
OBJECTIVE: In the current study we aimed to expand the understanding of the association between CSA and sexual difficulties by examining the moderating role of traumatic sexuality in the association between CSA and sexual difficulties among a sample of CSA survivors.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The hypothesized moderation model was examined among a sample of 393 CSA survivors.
METHODS: Significant interactions were probed using simple slopes tests using the interactions R package.

In the current study we sought to identify sexual behavior profiles and examine the levels of childhood abuse history and trauma measures in each profile. The study was conducted among a large non-clinical sample of men and women (n = 806). Latent profile analysis was employed to identify distinct profiles of sexual behaviors and then childhood abuse, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety, and motives for engaging in sex were assessed in each profile. Four distinct profiles of sexual behavior were identified: hyposexual individuals, hypersexual porn users, porn users, a

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma, in particular childhood sexual abuse (CSA), and unmet sexuality and intimacy needs are prevalent among people with psychosis spectrum disorders. The association between CSA and sexuality and intimacy needs over time in adults with psychosis spectrum disorders were examined.
METHOD: Patients (n = 1119) were recruited as part of the Genetic Risk and OUtcome of Psychosis (GROUP) study, a representative cohort of patients with non-affective psychotic disorder. At baseline, three-year and six-year follow-up, sexuality and intimacy needs were assessed with the Camberwe

To understand how and why most people entertain deviant sexual fantasies without really desiring to act on them whereas some people put them into practice, it is essential to better understand the origin, development, and functions of deviant sexual fantasy in sexual offenders. The present paper investigates three areas of the literature on sexual offenders, i.e. early traumatic experiences, psychological problems, in terms of psychiatric disorders and negative emotional states, and coping strategies, hypothesizing a possible path through which early traumatic experiences may lead to deviant s

A history of sexual trauma (ST) and, especially, of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is common among men and women with mental disorders. The estimated prevalence ranges between one-third to two-thirds of psychiatric patients who have experienced sexual trauma. These survivors are at increased risk for developing psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Despite the great prevalence of sexual trauma and its mental implications, it remains under-diagnosed and under-recognized within the mental health system in Israel, as well as worldwide. This is due to the absence of a

OBJECTIVE: Sexual trauma is highly prevalent, particularly in women. Cognitions play a critical role in trauma recovery and may predict chronic mental and physical health difficulties. However, existing studies of cognitions following trauma have focused largely on global meanings (i.e., general beliefs, values, and goals) rather than on situational appraisals (i.e., understanding of the trauma or its impact). We aimed to determine the extent to which situational appraisals within the first month of experiencing sexual trauma differentially predict subsequent mental and physical health.

Posttraumatic stress symptoms are very high among sexual and/or gender minority (SGM) people. Development and testing of trauma interventions with SGM people is needed, but first we need to understand who among SGM people are at greatest risk of posttraumatic stress symptoms, how minority stress may contribute, and the frequency of substance use comorbidity with significant posttraumatic stress symptoms among SGM people. General linear models and logistic regressions were used to examine demographic differences, minority stress, and substance use related to posttraumatic stress symptoms among
