An overview of sexually transmitted diseases. Part III. Sexually transmitted diseases in HIV-infected patients.

UNLABELLED: The HIV epidemic has dramatically altered the field of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). HIV infection is unique among sexually transmitted diseases because it can modify the clinical presentation and features of other STDs. Conversely, other STDs can affect the transmission of HIV. This review is the third part of a series that has provided a general overview of STDs. In this article, genital ulcer diseases (genital herpes, syphilis, chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum, and granuloma inguinale), human papillomavirus infection (anogenital warts and subclinical infections), moll

Sexually transmitted diseases and the sexually abused child.

Sexually transmitted diseases pose a significant problem for children who have been sexually abused. The pattern of sexually transmitted diseases in this group reflects their changing pattern in the community at large. The prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases in sexual abuse victims is significant although it depends on a number of factors, including sexually transmitted disease prevalence in the community, the organism, and the type of abuse. The transmission route of most common sexually transmitted diseases beyond the neonatal period is accepted as sexual abuse, although the possibil

Sexually transmitted diseases syndromic approach: proctitis.

Proctitis is a common problem and is most frequently associated with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). However, in the last ten years the incidence of infectious proctitis appears to be rising, especially in men who have sex with men. This may be due to the rise of people participating in receptive anal sex as well as the increase in sexually transmitted infections, such as those from Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Herpes simplex virus and Treponema pallidum. Recent outbreaks of lymphogranuloma venereum among homosexual men throughout Europe highlight the need to consider sexua

Global epidemiology of sexually transmitted diseases.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are among the first ten causes of unpleasant diseases in young adult males in developing countries and the second major cause of unpleasant diseases in young adult women. Adolescents and young adults (15-24 years old) make up only 25% of the sexually active population, but represent almost 50% of all new acquired STDs. In general, STDs are epidemics and present an enormous health and economic consequences. An adequate screening for STDs should be done on a routine basis in every part of the world. Many STDs are asymptomatic and therefore can difficult to co

International travel and sexually transmitted diseases.

Despite concerted efforts to control sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) worldwide, they still remain a major public health problem. Out of the 25 organisms known to be transmitted sexually, travelers are at greater risk of acquiring HIV and other STDs in developing countries in view of the high prevalence rates in these countries, particularly after sexual exposure to local commercial sex workers (CSWs). Some of the STDs acquired during international travel are more likely to be resistant to standard antimicrobial regimens for the STDs. HIV, gonorrhoea, syphilis, non-specific urethritis, hep

Adolescent Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Recent Developments.

Adolescents and young adults continue to have the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases. New chlamydia and gonorrhea diagnostic tests are being used in innovative ways to increase the number of infections that are detected. Nevertheless, challenges such as gonorrhea resistance and partner notification and treatment continue to hinder efforts to reduce the prevalence of these two bacterial infections. Although recent surveillance data suggest a decreasing trend of herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) incidence among adolescents and young adults, the incidence of sexually transmitted human pa

Adolescent knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents learn about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) from many sources, yet little is known about how well these educational sources are teaching them about STDs. GOAL: The goal was to assess basic knowledge about STDs and their prevalence, to determine the correlates of high STD knowledge levels, and to explore whether self-perceptions of STD knowledge correlated with knowledge test scores. STUDY DESIGN: A convenience sample of adolescents from waiting areas in an urban children's hospital were asked by peer educators about their STD education, the sources of this educat

Sexually transmitted diseases: testing and treating.

Adolescents remain a group at particular risk for STD acquisition due to a combination of biological and psychosocial factors. Access to care can be an obstacle to seeking appropriate screening and treatment for many adolescents; undetected infection may lead to unwanted sequelae, including pelvic inflammatory disease, chronic abdominal pain, tubal scarring, and increased risk of ectopic pregnancy. With respect to gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and chancroid, the hope is that improved detection will decrease sequelae by prompting earlier recognition and treatment. In all cases of suspected se

Sexually transmitted diseases in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Although human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) rates are increasing rapidly in Asia, a full understanding of the extent of other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in many of these areas is lacking. There have been anecdotes of rising rates of STDs in Mongolia, a country thus far relatively unaffected by HIV. To further the understanding of STDs, a prevalence study was conducted in the STD clinic in Ulaanbaatar, the capital and largest city in Mongolia. Among 260 patients, the prevalence of gonorrhoea, chlamydia and syphilis was 31.1%, 8.1% and 8.6% respectively for males and 10.3%, 9.9% and 6.

Sexually transmitted diseases: United States, 1995.

Over the past two decades, the United States has experienced some dramatic changes in the rates of three "classic" sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) as well as the introduction of a variety of newer and more complex STD organisms. Rates of primary and secondary syphilis increased through the mid-1980s to a record high of 20.3 cases per 100,000 population in 1990. Since then, rates have dropped 69 percent to 6.3, the lowest rate in 35 years. Gonorrhea rates increased steadily between 1950 and 1975, plateaued between 1975 and 1978, before beginning a gradual but quite steady decline. In 1995

Sexually transmitted diseases in South Africa.

AIM: To review the epidemiology of and data collection for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in South Africa. METHODS: Literature published since 1980 on STDs in South Africa were complied and evaluated. Historical reports and salient unpublished literature were also used in the literature review. Studies were critically reviewed in the light of sample populations and study methods, and a baseline picture of the patterns of STD burden was developed. RESULTS: The STD burden in apparently asymptomatic study populations is significant. Ulcerative infections, primarily caused by syphilis and
