OBJECTIVES: To determine if auditory function is associated with current long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) concentrations in a cohort of young adults who consume oceanic fish with naturally acquired methylmercury (MeHg). We measured participants plasma LCPUFA concentrations (total n-3, total n-6 and the n-6:n-3 ratio) and looked for an association with Auditory Brain Response (ABR) latencies and Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) amplitudes.
DESIGN: Auditory function of 534 participants from the Seychelles Child Development Study (SCDS) main cohort was examined at 19 years of age. Test

Evidence from an outbreak of methyl mercury (MeHg) poisoning in Iraq suggested that adverse effects of prenatal exposure on child development begin to appear at or above 10ppm measured in maternal hair. To test this hypothesis in a fish-eating population, we enrolled a cohort of 779 children (the main cohort) in the Seychelles Child Development Study (SCDS). The cohort was prenatally exposed to MeHg from maternal fish consumption, and the children started consuming fish products at about 1 year of age. Prenatal exposure was measured in maternal hair and recent postnatal exposure in the child's

INTRODUCTION: People worldwide depend upon daily fish consumption as a major source of protein and other nutrients. Fish are high in nutrients essential for normal brain development, but they also contain methylmercury (MeHg), a neurotoxicant. Our studies in a population consuming fish daily have indicated no consistent pattern of adverse associations between prenatal MeHg and children's development. For some endpoints we found performance improved with increasing prenatal exposure to MeHg. Follow up studies indicate this association is related to the beneficial nutrients present in fish.

BACKGROUND: ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters have been associated with methylmercury (MeHg) toxicity in experimental animal models.
AIMS: To evaluate the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in maternal ABC transporter genes with 1) maternal hair MeHg concentrations during pregnancy and 2) child neurodevelopmental outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nutrition Cohort 2 (NC2) is an observational mother-child cohort recruited in the Republic of Seychelles from 2008-2011. Total mercury (Hg) was measured in maternal hair growing during pregnancy as a biomarker for prenatal Me

PURPOSE: The potential for ill-informed causal inference is a major concern in published longitudinal studies evaluating impaired neurological function in children prenatally exposed to background levels of methyl mercury (MeHg). These studies evaluate a large number of developmental tests. We propose an alternative analysis strategy that reduces the number of comparisons tested in these studies.
METHODS: Using data from the 9-year follow-up of 643 children in the Seychelles child development study, we grouped 18 individual endpoints into one overall ordinal outcome variable as well as by dev

Maternal thyroid hormones facilitate optimal foetal neurodevelopment; however, the exact role of the thyroid hormones on specific cognitive outcomes is unknown. The present study aimed to investigate associations between maternal thyroid function and neurodevelopmental outcomes in the Seychelles Child Development Study (SCDS) Nutrition 2 cohort (n 1328). Maternal free thyroid hormones (fT3, fT4 and fTSH) were assessed at 28 weeks' gestation with a range of child cognitive outcomes analysed at 20 months. Dietary iodine intake was analysed for a subset of women through a Food Frequency Questionn

Background Pulmonary embolism (PE) is an important cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide. Data from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in Africa are limited. This study describes the epidemiology of acute PE in Seychelles and examines outcomes associated with different management approaches in patients with intermediate-risk PE. Methods This retrospective observational cohort study was conducted at Seychelles Hospital, Victoria, the national tertiary referral hospital and principal public healthcare facility in the Republic of Seychelles. We conducted a retrospective obs

PURPOSE: Methylmercury (MeHg) is a known neurodevelopmental toxicant in sufficient dosage and is universally found in fish. Current fish advisories for children are based on epidemiology studies examining prenatal exposure with a premise that MeHg exposure resulting from children eating fish could also be neurotoxic and have long-term consequences. However, the evidence that this assumption is true is limited. We investigated postnatal MeHg exposure from regular fish consumption using time weighted Hg measurements to determine if there are neurotoxic consequences.
METHODS: We examined 85 neur

Studies to date of the developmental effects of pre- and postnatal methylmercury exposure from fish consumption in the Seychelles Islands, using linear regression models for analysis, have not shown adverse effects on neurodevelopmental test scores. In this study we evaluated whether nonlinear effects of methylmercury exposure were present, using scores on six tests administered to cohort children in the Seychelles Child Development Study at 66 months of age. Prenatal exposure was determined by measuring mercury in a segment of maternal scalp hair representing growth during pregnancy. Postnata

BACKGROUND: Some authors have reported that low-level exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) adversely impacts measures of auditory function. These reports, however, are not consistent in their findings. Consequently, we examined auditory function in a population exposed to low-level methylmercury (MeHg) exposure from fish consumption and to mercury vapor (Hg0) from dental amalgams. We analyzed their associations with the participants hearing acuity, absolute and interwave ABR latencies, and otoacoustic emissions (distortion product/DPOAE and click evoked/CEOAE).
DESIGN: We administered an audiomet

BACKGROUND: Fish is a rich source of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) but also contains the neurotoxicant methyl mercury (MeHg). PUFAs may modify the relation between prenatal MeHg exposure and child development either directly by enhancing neurodevelopment or indirectly through the inflammatory milieu.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to investigate the associations of prenatal MeHg exposure and maternal PUFA status with child development at 20 mo of age.
DESIGN: The Seychelles Child Development Study Nutrition Cohort 2 is an observational study in the Republic of Seychelles, a high-fish

BACKGROUND: A few studies have suggested an association between prenatal exposure to methylmercury and decreased heart rate variability (HRV) related to autonomic heart function, but no study has examined this association using baroreflex sensitivity (BRS). In this study we assessed the distribution of BRS and immediate orthostatic hypotension (IOH) in young Seychellois adults and their associations with exposure to prenatal and recent postnatal methylmercury.
METHODS: Subjects in the Seychelles Child Development Study (SCDS) main cohort were evaluated at age 19 years. Non-invasive beat-to-be

Recent development in measuring educational outcomes has led to increased collaboration between international organisations and better understanding of education systems. From SACMEQ (Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality) a full data archive of the achievement of Grade 6 pupils in fourteen developing countries (including Seychelles) has been prepared. At the same time, from the Seychelles Child Development Study (SCDS) a longitudinal information system has been built on a cohort of Seychellois children from early childhood through their primary education. There is controversy about the risks and benefits of consuming fish. Fish consumption provides nutrients, some of which are essential for brain growth and development. All fish, however, contain methyl mercury (MeHg), a known neurotoxicant. The toxic effect of MeHg seems most damaging during brain development, and thus, prenatal exposure is of greatest concern. At present the level of prenatal exposure associated with risk to a child's neurodevelopment is not known. Balancing the rewards and possible risks of fish consumption presents a dilemma to consumers and regulatory authorities. We revie

BACKGROUND: In 2015, antimicrobial resistance was identified as a public health priority for the South-Western Indian Ocean (SWIO) (i.e. Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte (France), Reunion Island (France), and Seychelles). However, in 2020, colonization rates of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARB) in human populations on most islands in SWIO were still not known and neither hospital nor community colonization rates had been estimated. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of colonization of six ARB groups in hospitalized patients residing in the SWIO territories. The si

BACKGROUND: Human exposure to mercury (Hg) is widespread and both organic and inorganic Hg are routinely found in the human brain. Millions of people are exposed to methyl Hg (MeHg) due to the consumption of fish and to inorganic Hg from dental amalgams, small scale gold mining operations, use of Hg containing products, or their occupations. Neuropathology information associated with exposures to different species of Hg is primarily based on case reports of single individuals or collections of case studies involving a single species of Hg at toxic exposure levels such as occurred in Japan and

Waterborne parasitic diseases form one of common and important public health and economic problems in low- and middle-income countries, though little is known on the burden and patterns of these diseases in most regions. This systematic scoping review informs on the prevalence and pattern of waterborne parasitic infections in eastern Africa from 1st of January 1941 to 31st of December 2019. The review found limited number of published studies on waterborne parasitic diseases, though 13 of the 15 studied countries in eastern Africa provided one or more published report(s) totalling 47 reports.
