Shame mediates the relationship between depression and addictive behaviours.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and gambling problems are common in young adults. Self-medication theory states that young adults with depression drink and/or gamble to escape negative emotions. Research shows that depression is a risk factor for drinking/gambling problems, but more work is needed to examine mediators underlying these associations. One potential mediator is shame. Shame is a self-directed emotion that follows a negative life event and is characterized by intense feelings of inferiority, worthlessness, and embarrassment. Depressed individuals are especially susceptible to shame (and associ

Comparing shame in clinical and nonclinical populations: Preliminary findings.

OBJECTIVES: To conduct a preliminary study comparing different trauma and clinical populations on types of shame coping style and levels of state shame and guilt. METHODS: A mixed independent groups/correlational design was employed. Participants were recruited by convenience sampling of 3 clinical populations-complex trauma (n = 65), dissociative identity disorder (DID; n = 20), and general mental health (n = 41)-and a control group of healthy volunteers (n = 125). All participants were given (a) the Compass of Shame Scale, which measures the four common shame coping behaviors/styles of "wit

Facing rejection: new relationships, broken relationships, shame, and stalking.

This study provides a preliminary examination of the relationship among shame-proneness, emotions, and persistent, unwanted courting or pursuit behaviour. A total of 222 undergraduates completed a questionnaire measuring responses to the termination of a relationship or the declining of a date. The Test of Self-Conscious Affect was used to measure shame. Although shame was unrelated to types of intrusive behaviour, individuals who engaged more repetitively in covert pursuit tended to ruminate more over their love interest than did those who rarely engaged in such behaviour. Rumination was posi

The Legacy of Shame following Childhood Sexual Abuse Disclosures.

Shame has been recognized as a barrier to child sexual abuse (CSA) disclosures, but there has been less focus on the impact of shame on post-disclosure. This study explores how shame is experienced by CSA survivors following disclosure. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eleven CSA survivors aged 14-25 years on their CSA disclosure experiences. Thematic analysis of the transcripts produced four themes that highlight the various impacts of shame post-disclosure: 1) struggles with identifying as a sexual abuse survivor; 2) manifestations of shame; 3) shaming responses to disclosures;

Using shame to extend Martin Conway's self-memory system.

We extend Conway's self-memory system by adding theory and data from shame, an emotion that disrupts the internalised ideals of society needed for a positive self-concept. The event that caused 273 undergraduates their greatest amount of shame was analyzed; 66% were not very negative except for producing shame. Ratings of post-event effects, including two measure of self (self-perceived weakness, and centrality to identity) and four clinical symptoms (intrusions, avoidance, anxiety, and depression), were attributed separately to the remembered event, behaviour during the event, and shame from

Childhood physical abuse and aggression: Shame and narcissistic vulnerability.

This study examined narcissistic vulnerability and shame-proneness as potential mediators between childhood physical abuse (CPA) and adult anger and aggression. Participants were 400 undergraduate students, 134 of whom had a history of CPA. All participants completed self-report questionnaires assessing history of CPA, shame-proneness, narcissistic vulnerability, physical aggression, trait anger, and hostility. Results indicated abused participants were more angry and aggressive and experienced higher levels of shame-proneness and narcissistic vulnerability than nonabused participants. Multipl

The Effect of Self-Compassion on Shame in Post-Event Processing.

Post-event processing (PEP) refers to negative and repetitive thinking following anxiety-inducing social situations and is a maintaining factor in social anxiety. Research has shown that state shame predicts PEP, beyond trait and state social anxiety. Therefore, it may be important for interventions to target shame during the post-event period. Self-compassion interventions have shown promise for PEP, and therefore, the primary purpose of the present study was to examine whether a self-compassion intervention reduces state shame during the post-event period. Participants (N = 73) completed a v

Dreamers of the Day: An Exploration of Identity, Shame, and Maladaptive Daydreaming.

This study explores the relationship between maladaptive daydreaming (MD) and identity shame among individuals with MD. Participants described how MD originated or intensified during periods of distress related to aspects of their identity they felt shame toward, such as sexuality, culture, or disability. They constructed idealized versions of themselves in fantasies and imaginary communities, which provided them with belonging and acceptance. These fantasies seemed to allow participants to process shame without external support. The obsessive nature of MD narratives suggests participants were

The association between child maltreatment and shame: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although there is a growing body of evidence documenting the relationship between child maltreatment and its five types and shame, the direction and extent of these relationships are unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to clarify the relationship between child maltreatment and its subtypes (physical abuse, physical neglect, emotional abuse, emotional neglect, and sexual abuse) and shame, providing evidence for social service professionals to understand the negative impacts of maltreatment and develop appropriate intervention strateg

(Dis)respect and shame in the context of 'medically unexplained' illness.

A significant proportion of somatic symptoms remain, at present, medically unexplained. These symptoms are common, can affect any part of the body, and can result in a wide range of outcomes-from a minor, transient inconvenience to severe, chronic disability-but medical testing reveals no observable pathology. This paper explores two first-person accounts of so-called 'medically unexplained' illness: one that is published in a memoir, and the other produced during a semi-structured interview. Both texts are revelatory for their expression of shame in the context of encountering disrespect from

Shame in the obsessive compulsive related disorders: a conceptual review.

BACKGROUND: Theoretical and anecdotal support for the role of shame in obsessive compulsive related disorders (OCRDs) is prominent. Developing our understanding of shame׳s role in OCRDs is important to building knowledge about this new diagnostic category. This review aims to consolidate our understanding of shame in each OCRD, through summarizing existing clinical, conceptual, and empirical work. METHODS: We provide an overview of shame, its measurement considerations, and a full review of 110 articles addressing shame in OCRDs. RESULTS: General shame and shame about having a mental illness

Childhood abuse and current interpersonal conflict: the role of shame.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether shame-proneness mediates the relationship between women's histories of childhood sexual abuse and their current partner and family conflict and child maltreatment. Previous research has found that women with childhood sexual abuse histories experience heightened shame and interpersonal conflict. However, research examining the relationship of shame to interpersonal conflict is lacking. METHOD: Participants were 129 mothers of children enrolled in a summer camp program for at-risk children from financially disadvantaged families. Data were collected on women's chi

Young children's adjustment as a function of maltreatment, shame, and anger.

Maltreated children are at increased risk for behavior problems. This study examines a model in which shame mediates the potential relation between maltreatment and anger, and anger mediates the potential relation between shame and behavior problems. Participants were 177 children (ages 3 to 7 years) and their mothers, 90 of whom had histories of perpetrating neglect and/or physical abuse. Physical abuse, but not neglect, was related to increased shame during an evaluative task; shame was related to increased anger; and anger to teacher ratings of total behavior problems and externalizing prob

Developmental trajectory of guilt and shame during the transition to university.

BACKGROUND: The transition into adulthood is often accompanied by increases in negative self-conscious feelings and psychological distress. This study aimed to identify developmental trajectories in guilt and shame and their associations with psychological factors during the first university year. METHODS: This cohort study examined changes in guilt and shame in a sample of first-year undergraduate students in China (n=311). Participants completed electronic surveys at the beginning, after two months and twelve months, with outcomes of guilt and shame, and predictors including childhood maltr

The shame of truth - death due to accidental autoerotic asphyxia.

Autoerotic deaths occur in the context of sexual activity when different devices and objects are used to increase stimulation and sexual pleasure, resulting in unintentional deaths. A common feature of autoerotic deaths s the presence of a self-rescue mechanism to ensure survival and escape a dangerous situation. By definition, autoerotic deaths are accidental. Thus, it is essential to exclude suicide or homicide. An atypical case of autoerotic asphyxia is presented, in which the victim showed a ligature mark produced by a soft belt with maximum pressure on the posterior aspect of the neck and

Shame and Anxiety: The Mediating Role of Childhood Adversity in Dancers.

The combination of shame, anxiety, and a history of childhood maltreatment can have devastating effects on self-esteem and on the morbidity and mortality of an individual. Shame is a natural emotion evoked in social evaluative settings. Without some degree of shame, goal attainment is less likely. However, high levels of shame may increase pathology and decrease performance. In this crosssectional study, pre-professional and professional dancers were divided into two shame groupings: low (N = 193) and high (N = 25). Chi square and multivariate analyses of covariance (age and gender as covariat

Love as delusion, delusions of love: erotomania, narcissism and shame.

Erotomania has a long, colourful history in psychiatry. It is a rare condition in which the patient ('subject') develops the belief that he or she is loved from afar by another person ('object'). The subject is generally female, though men predominate in forensic samples. The object is generally perceived to belong to a higher social class, reflecting a sociopolitical element in the construction of love. Erotomania requires active treatment and risk management as it can be associated with stalking and other offending behaviour. In addition to featuring in the psychiatry literature, erotomania

Shame as a predictor of post-event rumination in social anxiety.

Evidence shows that people with high social anxiety levels ruminate about distressing social events, which contributes to the maintenance of social anxiety symptoms. The present study aimed to explore the role of shame in maintaining post-event rumination (PER) following a negative social event (an impromptu speech with negative feedback) in a student sample (N = 104). Participants reported negative rumination related to the event one day and one week after the speech. PER measured one day after the speech was not associated with social anxiety symptoms and state anxiety. One week later, parti
