Shewanella putrefaciens: A Rare Cause of Refractory Peritonsillar Abscess in an Immunocompetent Adult.

Shewanella species are motile, oxidase-positive, non-fermenting Gram-negative bacilli widely distributed in marine and aquatic environments. Although primarily environmental organisms, Shewanella spp. are rare human pathogens, most often associated with skin and soft tissue infections. Involvement of the head and neck region is exceptional. We report the case of a 28-year-old immunocompetent male with no history of seawater exposure who presented with a one-week history of odynophagia, fever, trismus, and dysphagia. Clinical examination revealed a unilateral peritonsillar abscess. Needle aspir

Shewanella putrefaciens, a rare human pathogen: A review from a clinical perspective.

Shewanella putrefaciens is a gramnegative, facultatively anaerobic, rod shaped bacterium. It belongs to the class of the Gammaproteobacteria and was first described in 1931. S. putrefaciens is part of the marine microflora and especially present in moderate and warm climates. The bacterium is a rare oppurtonistic human pathogen associated mainly with intra-abdominal as well as skin and soft tissue infections. However, it has also been reported in association with more severe diseases such as pneumonia, intracerebral and ocular infections and endocarditis. In these cases the clinical courses ar

Role of Al substitution in the reduction of ferrihydrite by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1.

Substitution of aluminum under natural environmental conditions has been proven to inhibit the transformation of weakly crystalline iron (oxyhydr)-oxides towards well crystalline iron oxides, thereby enhancing their long-term stability. However, exploration on the role of aluminum substitution in bacteria-mediated iron oxides transformation is relatively lacking, especially in the anaerobic underground condition where iron (oxyhydr)-oxides are easy to reduced. In this study, we selected four different levels of substitution aluminum prevalent in iron oxides under natural conditions, which are

Abiotic and Biotic Reduction of Iodate Driven by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1.

Iodate (IO3-) can be abiotically reduced by Fe(II) or biotically reduced by the dissimilatory Fe(III)-reducing bacterium Shewanella oneidensis (MR-1) via its DmsEFAB and MtrCAB. However, the intermediates and stoichiometry between the Fe(II) and IO3- reaction and the relative contribution of abiotic and biotic IO3- reduction by biogenic Fe(II) and MR-1 in the presence of Fe(III) remain unclear. In this study, we found that abiotic reduction of IO3- by Fe(II) produced intermediates HIO and I- at a ratio of 1:2, followed by HIO disproportionation to I- and IO3-. Comparative analyses of IO3- redu

Pellicle development of Shewanella oneidensis is an aerotaxis-piloted and energy-dependent process.

Pellicles are biofilms found at the air-liquid interface and are widely distributed in natural environments. In this study, a simple pellicle detection method was established, and using this new method, the pellicle formation activities of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and its 42 cytochrome c mutants were analysed. The results showed that the pellicle was initiated at very early stages of incubation. Aerotaxis was the major external factor, while energy acquirement was the main internal factor for pellicle initiation. Among the 42 cytochrome c mutants, 17 mutants, including those deficient in aer

Unraveling the Mechanism for the Viability Deficiency of Shewanella oneidensis oxyR Null Mutant.

UNLABELLED: Oxidative stresses triggered by reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage various cellular components are unavoidable for virtually all living organisms. In defense, microorganisms have evolved sophisticated mechanisms to sense, respond to, and battle against ROS. Shewanella oneidensis, an important research model for applied and environmental microbes, employs OxyR to mediate the response to H2O2 by derepressing the production of the major H2O2 scavenger KatB as a major means toward these goals. Surprisingly, despite enhanced H2O2 degradation, the oxyR mutant carries a viability d

Identification of an integron containing the quinolone resistance gene qnrA1 in Shewanella xiamenensis.

This study investigated multidrug resistance in Shewanella xiamenensis isolated from an estuarine water sample in China during 2014. This strain displayed resistance or decreased susceptibility to ampicillin, aztreonam, cefepime, cefotaxime, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, kanamycin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. The antimicrobial resistance genes aacA3, blaOXA-199, qnrA1 and sul1 were identified by PCR amplification and by sequencing. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and DNA hybridization experiments showed that the quinolone resistance gene qnrA1 was chromosomally located.

Effect of thiols, zinc, and redox conditions on Hg uptake in Shewanella oneidensis.

Mercury uptake in bacteria represents a key first step in the production and accumulation of methylmercury in biota. Previous experiments with mercury methylating bacteria have shown that Hg uptake is enhanced by some thiols, in particular cysteine, and that it is an energy-dependent process through heavy metal transporters [Schaefer et al. Environ. Sci. Technol. 2014, 48, 3007]. In this study, we examine Hg uptake in the nonmethylating facultative aerobe, Shewanella oneidensis, under both anaerobic and aerobic conditions. Our results demonstrate similar characteristics of the Hg uptake system

Synergistic Antibacterial Mechanism of Ginger and Rosemary Essential Oils Against Shewanella putrefaciens.

This study investigated the synergistic antibacterial mechanism of ginger essential oil (GEO) and rosemary essential oil (REO) against Shewanella putrefaciens. Antibacterial efficacy and interactions were assessed by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index, and growth curves. Membrane integrity was evaluated using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), leakage of intracellular components, and alkaline phosphatase (AKPase) activity. Structural damage was observed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects on antioxidan

Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling reprograms extracellular electron transfer of Shewanella oneidensis.

Limited extracellular electron transfer (EET) efficiency constrains the electrocatalytic performance of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. Although the c-type cytochrome (c-Cyts) network is essential for EET, its regulatory mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study systematically compared the effects of overexpressing c-Cyts components versus cAMP receptor protein (CRP) modulation on EET efficiency in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Overexpression of individual c-Cyts failed to enhance EET. In contrast, coexpression of CymA, CctA, and MtrCBA (strain CC-Mtr) increased the maximum power densit

Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 respires CdSe quantum dots for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Living bio-nano systems for artificial photosynthesis are of growing interest. Typically, these systems use photoinduced charge transfer to provide electrons for microbial metabolic processes, yielding a biosynthetic solar fuel. Here, we demonstrate an entirely different approach to constructing a living bio-nano system, in which electrogenic bacteria respire semiconductor nanoparticles to support nanoparticle photocatalysis. Semiconductor nanocrystals are highly active and robust photocatalysts for hydrogen (H2) evolution, but their use is hindered by the oxidative side of the reaction. In th

Biogenic FeS accelerates reductive dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32.

Dissimilatory metal reducing bacteria (DMRB) widely exist in the subsurface environment and are involved in various contaminant degradation and element geochemical cycling processes. Recent studies suggest that DMRB can biosynthesize metal nanoparticles during metal reduction, but it is unclear yet how such biogenic nanomaterials would affect their decontamination behaviors. In this study, we found that the dechlorination rates of carbon tetrachloride (CT) by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 was significantly increased by 8 times with the formation of biogenic ferrous sulfide (FeS) nanoparticles.

Shewanella: an important, emerging and lethal pathogen in a patient with recurrent presentations of cholangitis.

We present a case of recurrent cholangitis caused by Shewanella algae, a lethal, emerging pathogen that clinicians should be made aware of. An 86-year-old man with a history of gastrectomy for peptic ulcer disease and a cerebrovascular accident with known choledocholithiasis presented with recurrent episodes of cholangitis that failed conservative antibiotic treatment regimens. Shewanella has been described to have increasing resistance to piperacillin and tazobactam. Both S. algae and multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli were co-isolated in this patient, which required broader spectrum antibi

Toxicity of tetracycline and its transformation products to a phosphorus removing Shewanella strain.

Tetracycline (TC) as an emerging contaminant has raised serious concerns about its toxicity and removal in wastewater treatment processes. The more toxic transformation products of TC, 4-epitetracycline (ETC), anhydrotetracycline (ATC) and 4-epianhydrotetracycline (EATC) are also widely detected. This study investigated the antibacterial and bactericidal activity of TC, ETC, ATC, EATC against Shewanella sp, using Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains as quality controls. Further, batch assays were conducted to investigate the inhibition of these antibiotics on the phosphorus remo

A rare case of Shewanella putrefaciens bacteremia in a patient of road traffic accident.

Shewanella putrefaciens rarely causes human infection. These are mostly found in environment and food stuffs. Shewanella are often found in mixed culture. It has been implicated in cellulitis, otitis media, and septicemia. It may be found in respiratory tract, urine, feces, and pleural fluid. There is no definite guideline for therapeutic option. In general, these are susceptible to various antimicrobial agents but are often resistant to penicillin and cephalothin. We report a rare case of bacteremia by S. putrefaciens in a patient of head injury with polytrauma after a road traffic accident.

Isolation of Shewanella algae from rectal swabs of patients with bloody diarrhoea.

Shewanella algae is an emerging bacteria rarely implicated as a human pathogen. It was infrequently recovered from clinical specimens probably because of inadequate processing of non-fermenting oxidase-positive gram-negative bacilli. We report here isolation of S. algae in pure culture and mixed with E. coli from two cases of acute gastroenteritis with bloody mucous containing diarrhea occurring at the same time. As this organism is not a normal flora of the gut, the possible source of infection may be fish contaminated with the organism. Whether this bacterium can be considered an enteric pat
