"Scorched air": A narrative review of inhalational injuries in fire onboard ships.

Fires aboard ships remain a serious hazard, posing significant risks to crew members due to the confined and often poorly ventilated environments. Modern ships, especially military vessels with airtight compartments, are particularly vulnerable to rapid accumulation of smoke, even from minor fires. In such settings, smoke inhalation-not burns-is the leading cause of fire-related mortality. This article explores the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and management of inhalational injuries resulting from onboard ship fires. It aims to highlight the unique challenges faced in maritime set

Environmental impacts of grey water discharge from ships in the Baltic Sea.

Discharge of grey water from ships is today unregulated in most sea areas, including the Baltic Sea. Annually, an estimated 5.5 million m3 grey water is emitted to the Baltic Sea with largest contribution from RoPax (4.25 million m3) and cruise ships (0.65 million m3). In total 44 different contaminants in grey water was identified and sorted into the sub categories organic compounds (28) and metals (16). Zinc and copper had the highest average concentrations with yearly inputs of 2.8 tons (zinc) and 1.5 tons (copper). 159 tons of nitrogen and 26.4 tons of phosphorus were estimated to be disch

Plague, rats, and ships The realisation of the infection routes of plague.

Three plague pandemics plus several epidemics have ravaged the world. The three pandemics were characterised by the role shipping played in spreading of the plague. The third pandemic, which began in southern China in the 1850s, was carried out of Hong Kong in 1894 to all continents by steamships. The oldest known documents mentioning quarantine as a precaution against epidemics dates back to 1127 in Venice. During the second pandemic, the Black Death, quarantine was systematised. During the third pandemic gassing of the ships was introduced by burning sulphur. Later hydrogen cyanide, carbon m

Surveillance and control of communicable diseases related to passenger ships in Europe.

This study was conducted within the European SHIPSAN (ship sanitation) project and aims at exploring the legislative framework and current practices related to surveillance of communicable diseases and response aboard passenger ships in Europe. A detailed questionnaire was disseminated and completed by 59 competent authorities in 27 European countries. The majority of competent authorities used national legislation without special provisions for passenger ships. Only 20% had specific provisions for ships regarding quarantine, while a smaller proportion of new Member States (MS) have specific l

Outbreaks of gastroenteritis associated with noroviruses on cruise ships--United States, 2002.

During January 1-December 2, 2002, CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP), which conducts surveillance for acute gastroenteritis (AGE) on cruise ships with foreign itineraries sailing into U.S. ports received reports of 21 outbreaks of AGE on 17 cruise ships. Of the 21 outbreaks, nine were confirmed by laboratory analysis of stool specimens from affected persons to be associated with noroviruses, three were attributable to bacterial agents, and nine were of unknown etiology. Seven outbreaks were reported in 2001, and of these, four were confirmed to be associated with norovirus (CDC, unpublishe

Gastroenteritis outbreaks on cruise ships: contributing factors and thresholds for early outbreak detection.

When an increased number of acute gastroenteritis (AG) cases is detected among tourists staying at the same accommodation, outbreak management plans must be activated in a timely manner to prevent large outbreaks. Syndromic surveillance data collected between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2013 by five seagoing cruise ships were analysed to identify attack rate thresholds for early outbreak detection. The overall incidence rate of AG was 2.81 cases per 10,000 traveller-days (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.00-17.60), while the attack rate was 19.37 cases per 10,000 travellers (95% CI: 0.00-127

Water Safety Plan on cruise ships: a promising tool to prevent waterborne diseases.

BACKGROUND: Legionella spp. and other waterborne pathogens have been isolated from various water systems on land based premises as well as on ships and cases of Legionnaires' disease have been associated with both sites. Peculiarities of cruise ships water systems make the risk management a challenging process. The World Health Organization suggests a Water Safety Plan (WSP) as the best approach to mitigate risks and hazards such as Legionella spp. and others. OBJECTIVES: To develop WSP on a cruise ship and discuss challenges, perspectives and key issues to success. METHODS: Hazards and haza

Outbreaks of Gastrointestinal Diseases on Cruise Ships: Lessons from Three Decades of Progress.

Dramatic improvements in sanitary engineering and, especially, operational procedures aboard cruise ships began in the mid-1970s after several large outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Vessel Sanitation Program, working with the cruise industry, conducts ship inspections, provides public access to ship sanitation scores, and reports outbreak investigations. The significant increase in median ship sanitation scores over the past decade has been concomitant with a reduction in outbreak frequency to 3.7 per 1000 cruises. Most outbreaks of the pa

The impacts of ship emissions on ozone in eastern China.

Tropospheric ozone (O3), which is one of the main pollutants impeding air quality compliance, has received considerable attention in China. As maritime transportation continues to expand, the effect of ship emissions on air quality is becoming increasingly important. In this study, the Weather Research and Forecast model (WRF), the Community Multiscale Air Quality model (CMAQ), and the integrated process rate (IPR) module provided in the CMAQ are applied to evaluate the impacts of ship emissions on O3 concentration at a national scale in China, including the spatiotemporal characteristics and

A novel method for pre-ventilation of shipping containers.

Numerous shipping containers arrive with high levels of hazardous volatile chemicals in the interior air. This may constitute a health risk during inspection and unstuffing. The problem remains largely unaddressed due to ignorance, lack of suitable field instruments for chemical identification, and lack of easy to use, effective ventilation methods. Here, we present a novel ventilation approach based on extraction of air from the closed container via the existing top corner ventilators. A suction plate was developed to fit tightly over the corner ventilator and connected with a flexible hose t

Coupling of postural activity with motion of a ship at sea.

On land, body sway during stance becomes coupled with imposed oscillations of the illuminated environment or of the support surface. This coupling appears to have the function of stabilizing the body relative to the illuminated or inertial environment. In previous research, the stimulus has been limited to motion in a single axis. Little is known about our ability to couple postural activity with complex, multi-axis oscillations. On a ship at sea, we evaluated postural activity using measures of body movement, as such, and we separately evaluated a direct measure of coupling between body movem

An assistant ship surgeon's account of cholera at sea.

The diary of Thomas Graham, a naval ship surgeon, brings the voyage of HMS troopship Apollo in 1849 to life. A year after England's second great cholera outbreak, the pervasive fear of the disease became a reality onboard when cholera broke out. The intended voyage from England to China was diverted to South America where the ship was put into quarantine. So bad were the conditions onboard that the Times correspondent wrote: 'I have never seen a convict-ship in which the convicts were not more comfortably lodged'. Graham's writing provides an insightful record of life at sea in the mid-ninetee

Chemical contamination of potable water in ship tanks.

INTRODUCTION: Unpleasant odour from drinking water in newly built ships is increasingly documented by the German Port Health Authority during sanitary inspections. Chemical contaminations are assumed to originate from washed off solvents of tank coatings due to the non-maintenance of required drying periods. The aim of this study was to explore the frequency of drinking water contamination by chemicals in a selected sample of vessels and to assess the usefulness of recommended control measures. METHODS: The available analyses of chemicals in drinking water from container ships which were take
