BACKGROUND: Few reports about the success of high-energy extracorporeal shock-wave therapy in cases of plantar fasciitis exist, even fewer about long-term results. This study investigated results of high-energy extracorporeal shock wave therapy applied to patients with recalcitrant plantar fasciitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety ESWT were applied to 63 patients (73 heels; 25 male and 38 female; average age 54 (29 to 77) years) from November 1999 to July 2003. All patients had plantar fasciitis for more than 6 months and failure of all non-surgical treatment for more than 3 months. A Dornier

BACKGROUND: Chronic lymphedema of the upper limb is a frequent and disabling consequence of breast cancer surgery. It is associated with swelling and reduced quality of life. While manual lymphatic drainage is a standard treatment, additional physical modalities have shown potential to enhance therapeutic outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of short-wave diathermy combined with manual lymphatic drainage on limb circumferential measurements and quality of life in women with chronic lymphedema following breast cancer surgery.
METHODS: This single-arm, pre-post, retrospective obse

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus regarding the treatment of Achilles insertional tendinopathies. Eccentric training remains the main choice in the conservative treatment of this illness; however, the good results in the management of non-insertional Achilles tendinopathy were not replicated in the insertional condition. Low energy shock wave therapy has been described as an alternative to these patients, but has yet to be empirically tested.
HYPOTHESIS: Shock wave therapy, adjunctive to the eccentric strengthening protocol, will improve measures of pain and function.
DESIGN: Double blind, p

Statin therapy reduces clinical events in patients with stable coronary artery disease. Recent data indicate that the beneficial effects of statin therapy may also extend to patients experiencing an acute ischemic coronary event. However, the potential role of statins to further modify clinical outcome in patients undergoing coronary stent implantation has not been addressed. Therefore, we investigated whether the initiation of statin therapy immediately after successful coronary stent implantation improves short-term clinical outcome in 704 patients (335 patients with stable angina pectoris [

As a new therapeutic method, extracorporeal shock wave (ESW) has shown remarkable efficacy in the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorder syndrome. Numerous studies have shown that it has the advantages of noninvasiveness, short treatment time, etc. It can effectively relieve pain and improve symptoms such as joint mobility and opening degree. In clinical practice, through accurate diagnosis and positioning of different patients, appropriate treatment parameters such as therapeutic transducer, frequency and pressure can be selected to significantly improve the efficacy. At the same time,

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a well-known biophysical therapy that offers several beneficial effects, including a presumed increase in the growth of blood vessels. The chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay is a well-established in vivo model for studying angiogenesis. The aim of this study was to develop an experimental setup to apply ESWT to CAM in a three-step process and investigate the vascular response. First, we conducted virtual simulations of various shock-wave application setups to CAM and subsequently tested them in preliminary studies to evaluate their feasibility. In

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect and mechanism of ultrashort wave (USW) for prevention and treatment of vascular crisis after rat tail replantation.
METHODS: Eighty 3-month old female Sprague Dawley rats (weighing 232.8-289.6 g) were randomly divided into 5 groups. In each group, based on the caudal vein and the coccyx was retained, the tail was cut off. The tail artery was ligated in group A; the tail artery was anastomosed in groups B, C, D, and E to establish the tail replantation model. After surgery, the rats of group B were given normal management; the rats of group C were immediately g

1/1 atrial tachycardia or "quinidine" flutter under class I antiarrhythmic drugs is a serious complication of these agents which, unfortunately, cannot be anticipated. The aim of this study was to review the cases of 11 patients who had suffered this complication of class I antiarrhythmic therapy to see if it could have been prevented. All drugs of this class were included. The 11 subjects were aged 57 to 78: 7 had no apparent underlying cardiac disease and the others had valvular (n = 1), hypertensive (n = 1) and ischaemic (n = 2) heart disease. They were treated for episodes of paroxysmal at

Extracorporeal shock waves are defined as a sequence of sonic pulses characterized by high peak pressure over 100 MPa, fast pressure rise, and short lifecycle. In the 1980s extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) was first used for the treatment of urolithiasis. Orthopedic surgeons use extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) to treat non-union fractures, tendinopathies and osteonecrosis. The first application of ESWT in dermatology was for recalcitrant skin ulcers. Several studies in the last 10 years have shown that ESWT promotes angiogenesis, increases perfusion in ischemic tissues, de

BACKGROUND: Long QT syndromes (LQTS) arise from many genetic and nongenetic causes with certain characteristic ECG features preceding polymorphic ventricular tachyarrhythmias (PVTs). However, how the many molecular causes result in these characteristic ECG patterns and how these patterns are mechanistically linked to the spontaneous initiation of PVT remain poorly understood.
METHODS: Anatomic human ventricle and simplified tissue models were used to investigate the mechanisms of spontaneous initiation of PVT in LQTS.
RESULTS: Spontaneous initiation of PVT was elicited by gradually ramping u

The index of suspicion for accessory atrioventricular conduction pathways must be high in patients with paroxysmal tachycardias in order to avoid overlooking subtle delta waves or short PR intervals. The existence of many different types of accessory AV conduction syndromes can make therapy difficult. Understanding the physiology of each patient's tachycardia can make successful management more rapid, and empiric therapy should not be pursued indefinitely if early drug regimens are unsuccessful. Electrophysiologic study may elucidate the mechanism of the tachycardia and simplify the selection

New-wave behavioral therapies in obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCDs) comprise of third-wave therapies and newer cognitive therapies (CTs). This review covers outcome studies published in English until December 2017. A total of forty articles on mindfulness-based CT, metacognitive therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and danger ideation reduction therapy in the form of single-case studies, case series, open-label trials, two-group comparison studies, and randomized controlled studies were included. Results show that studies on these therapies are limited in number. Methodological limit
