[Morphology and problems of the morphogenesis of cytomegalic sialadenitis].

Two varieties of nodular sialadenitis, acute nodular (15%) and chronic with exacerbation of the nodular type (19%), were distinguished basing on analysis of the material from 880 children dead from cytomegaly. Parotid glands were examined electron-microscopically in 2 cass of generalized and 6 cases of localized cytomegaloviral infection. Basing on the histoenzymochemical data published earlier, the etiological role of cytomegalovirus in the development of nodular infiltrates was substantiated and the functional activity of cytomegalic cells in virus reproduction and isolation shown. Sialadenitis and systemic reaction associated with phenylbutazone.

Sialadenitis is an uncommon side effect of phenylbutazone, and we report seven patients with this reaction who were admitted to Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital over a seven year period. In addition to salivary gland swellings, all patients had evidence of a systemic disturbance that included fever in all cases, and, in varying combinations, pericarditis, pleurisy, rash, conjunctivitis, and disturbed hepatic function. Resolution of these features occurred following cessation of phenylbutazone, but this took several weeks in some cases. Pericarditis was the most severe manifestation, and

Contrast-Induced Sialadenitis of the Sublingual Glands.

Contrast-induced sialadenitis (CIS) is a rare, delayed pseudoallergic reaction from iodine containing contrast. Previously reported cases of CIS demonstrated that the two major salivary glands (parotid and submandibular) can be affected. The initial encounter of this entity can raise alarms to physicians as the differential diagnoses include serious infectious and inflammatory conditions such as Ludwig's angina and angioedema. Subsequently, it may lead to unnecessary testing and increased healthcare cost. Here we present a 60-year-old male who presented with bilateral sublingual gland swelling

A review of acute postoperative sialadenitis in children.

OBJECTIVE: Acute postoperative sialadenitis is a previously described rare entity that has occurred following general anesthesia and has also been associated with prolonged neurosurgical procedures. We aim to better characterize this entity while performing a literature review regarding potential etiologies, diagnosis, airway management and treatment options. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed at a pediatric tertiary care center from 2000 to 2014. Charts were selected for the study utilizing an ICD-9 diagnosis of sialadenitis occurring within two weeks of a surgical procedure

Sialoendoscopy in the diagnosis and management of obstructive sialadenitis.

OBJECTIVE: Sialoendoscopy is a new technology being used at a limited number of institutions for the diagnosis and management of obstructive sialadenitis. This technique is promising for its superior diagnostic potential as well as its decreased morbidity compared to traditional more invasive techniques for managing obstruction. Our objective is to review the sialoendoscopy experience at our institution to identify successes, areas of improvement, and to provide guidance to other programs that may be interested in sialoendoscopy. STUDY DESIGN: We did a retrospective review of all diagnostic a

Chronic sclerosing sialadenitis of the parotid gland.

Chronic sclerosing sialadenitis (Küttner's tumor) is a benign and chronic inflammatory condition of the submandibular gland that clinically cannot be easily distinguished from salivary malignant neoplasia. This is a report of a case of chronic sclerosing sialadenitis located as a solitary mass in an accessory parotid gland.

Immunohistochemical analyses of autoimmune sialadenitis in man.

The immunoreactivity pattern for different monoclonal antibodies to cytokeratins and to vimentin in epimyoepithelial islands typical for glands of patients with Sjögren's syndrome has been compared with that of normal parotid gland tissue. Two types of epithelial island cells were observed: one had an intermediate filament protein pattern similar to that of ordinary duct epithelial cells of normal parotid gland. The other had an intermediate filament protein pattern typical of myoepithelial and/or basal duct cells in normal glands. Thus, we conclude that the islands are composed of a mixed pop

Subtotal parotidectomy in the treatment of chronic sialadenitis.

Chronic recurrent parotitis can be disabling, and often requires surgery for its resolution. Twenty-one patients with chronic sialadenitis treated by subtotal parotidectomy were studied. Two patients developed transient and one significant postoperative recurrent parotitis, and two patients had salivary fistulas. There were no instances of permanent facial nerve weakness. Parotidectomy in patients with severe chronic sialadenitis risks injury to the facial nerve. When the nerve is indistinguishable from surrounding scar, subtotal parotidectomy would appear to be preferable to total parotidecto

[Acute sialadenitis by iodine contrast medium administration].

Acute iodide sialadenitis is a rare adverse reaction to iodinated contrast that causes self-limited salivary gland swell-ing. Its pathogenesis is still unclear, although kidney failure may be a risk factor. The diagnosis is initially clinical but angioedema, infections and lithiasis should be included in the differential diagnosis. No treatment or prophylaxis was proven to be beneficial. Although its prognosis is benign, associated complications have been reported. We report a case of 68-year-old man with swelling of the submandibular salivary glands after the administration of iodine-based co

Sarcoidosis Mimicking Chronic Sialadenitis of Parotid Gland.

Non-specific Chronic sialadenitis of the Parotid gland is an inflammatory disorder that leads to several anatomical and functional changes within the glandular structure. The exact etiopathogenesis of this disorder is unknown due to its relatively rare occurrence. Primary sarcoidosis of the Parotid gland masquerading the peripheral changes of Chronic sialadenitis has never been reported in literature. We report such a case of Primary Sarcoidosis of the Parotid gland presenting with non-specific chronic sialadenitis along with ipsilateral non-reducing disc displacement of the Temporomandibular

Sialographic Analysis of Radioiodine-Associated Chronic Sialadenitis.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To apply a novel sialography classification system to identify parotid and submandibular ductal findings following I-131 therapy and to assess correlates to dose and duration of symptoms. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective single-center case series. METHODS: Patients who underwent sialography between February 2008 and February 2019 after previously receiving I-131 treatment were identified via a retrospective chart review. Their sialograms were systematically evaluated and scored by applying the Iowa parotid sialogram scale to also include submandibular gland analysis. RESUL

Nonodontogenic Cervical Necrotizing Fasciitis Caused by Sialadenitis.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive infectious disease of the soft tissue with high mortality and morbidity rates. Necrotizing fasciitis is occasionally located in the head and neck region and develops after odontogenic infections. Factors affecting treatment success rates are early diagnosis, appropriate antibiotic treatment, and surgical debridement. We present a necrotizing fasciitis case located in the neck region that developed after sialoadenitis. It is important to emphasize that necrotizing fasciitis to be seen in the neck region is very rare. Nonodontogenic necrotizing fasc

Neonatal suppurative sialadenitis: an important clinical diagnosis.

Neonatal suppurative sialadenitis is a condition causing infection of the salivary glands, most frequently caused by Staphylococcus aureus. The vast majority of cases reported in the literature have been in infants with recognised risk factors. This report presents two cases of neonatal sialadenitis in siblings, neither of whom had any predisposing characteristics. The aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of this condition are discussed. This report will also highlight the need for awareness of this condition and its inclusion in considered differentials for neck swelling in all infants.

Postoperative acute sialadenitis after skull base surgery.

During retrosigmoid and far-lateral skull base surgical approaches, the head may be positioned at the extreme limits of rotation and flexion. In rare instances, patients may develop acute sialadenitis after surgery as a result of this positioning technique. Over a 4-year period, five patients developed postoperative sialadenitis after undergoing either a retrosigmoid craniotomy in the supine position (n = 4) or a far-lateral craniotomy in the park-bench position. Based on all the retrosigmoid and far-lateral approaches performed by the senior author (RFS), the incidence of sialadenitis was 0.8
