The overall prevalence of onchocerciasis was 78% and 73% in three villages of the woodland savanna of Koinadugu and four villages of the savanna-forest mosaic of Kambia respectively. The total number of persons examined was 611. In Koinadugu the prevalence of microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus in skin snips from the iliac crest and canthus was 51.3% and 22.5% respectively while corresponding figures for Kambia were 52.2% and 19.3%. The pattern of clinical manifestations were similar in both districts, the overall rates for nodules, skin lesions (moderate and severe) and leg elephantiasis bei

In a serological and entomological survey on yellow fever carried out in Sierra-Leone in 1972, altogether 899 sera from children 0 to 14 years were tested with 12 antigens by haemagglutination-inhibition and complement fixation tests. Mouse neutralization test with yellow fever, West-Nile and Zika viruses were also performed on selected sera. Generally speaking, the incidence of arboviruses is low but the prevalence of antibodies for some viruses was found to vary considerably between different areas. As regards yellow fever, the virus has recently been in circulation in only two areas: Bafodi

BACKGROUND: Total fertility rate measures the average number of children a woman is expected to have during her reproductive age (typically 15-49 years). Despite the national decline in Sierra Leone, significant disparities in total fertility rates persist across socioeconomic and geographic lines. This study investigated the inequalities in total fertility rate among women in Sierra Leone between 2008 and 2019.
METHODS: We utilized data from the three rounds of the Sierra Leone Demographic Health Survey conducted in 2008, 2013, and 2019. The World Health Organization's Health Equity Assessme

This paper examines health worker experiences in two areas of post-epidemic preparedness in Sierra Leone - vaccine trials and laboratory strengthening - to reflect on the place of people in current models of epidemic response. Drawing on ethnographic research and interviews with health workers in the aftermath of Ebola, it explores the hopes and expectations that interventions foster for frontline workers in under-resourced health systems, and describes the unseen work involved in sustaining robust response infrastructures. Our analysis focuses on what it means for the people who sustain healt

BACKGROUND: Globally, hearing loss is the second leading cause of disability, affecting approximately 18.7% of the world's population. However, the burden of hearing loss is unequally distributed, with the majority of affected individuals located in Asia or Sub-Saharan Africa. Following the 2014 West African Ebola Outbreak, disease survivors began to describe hearing loss as part of the constellation of symptoms known as Post-Ebola Syndrome. The goal of this study was to more fully characterize hearing loss among Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) survivors.
METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: EVD sur

BACKGROUND: There are limited data regarding the long-term health effects of child survivors of the 2013-2016 West African Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak. Here, we assess post-Ebola sequelae among EVD child survivors by comparing the self-reported symptoms between EVD child survivors and their close household contacts over one year after the end of the outbreak.
METHODS: EVD child survivors(n=159) and their close contacts(n=303) were enrolled in Western and Eastern Sierra Leone. Demographics and self-reported symptoms data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. We

The Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic that hit West Africa in 2013 was the worst outbreak of EVD in recorded history. While much has been published regarding the international and national-level EVD responses, there is a dearth of literature on district-level coordination and operational structures, successes, and failures. This article seeks to understand how the EVD response unfolded at the district level, namely the challenges to operationalizing EVD surveillance over the course of the outbreak in Port Loko and Kambia districts of Sierra Leone. We present here GOAL Global's understanding o

Lassa virus (LASV) is endemic to parts of West Africa and causes highly fatal hemorrhagic fever. The multimammate rat (Mastomys natalensis) is the only known reservoir of LASV. Most human infections result from zoonotic transmission. The very diverse LASV genome has 4 major lineages associated with different geographic locations. We used reverse transcription PCR and resequencing microarrays to detect LASV in 41 of 214 samples from rodents captured at 8 locations in Sierra Leone. Phylogenetic analysis of partial sequences of nucleoprotein (NP), glycoprotein precursor (GPC), and polymerase (L)

Health care workers (HCWs) are at increased risk for infection in outbreaks of Ebola virus disease (Ebola). To characterize Ebola in HCWs in Sierra Leone and guide prevention efforts, surveillance data from the national Viral Hemorrhagic Fever database were analyzed. In addition, site visits and interviews with HCWs and health facility administrators were conducted. As of October 31, 2014, a total of 199 (5.2%) of the total of 3,854 laboratory-confirmed Ebola cases reported from Sierra Leone were in HCWs, representing a much higher estimated cumulative incidence of confirmed Ebola in HCWs than

The tet(X) gene encodes a flavin-dependent monooxygenase that confers resistance to all clinically relevant tetracycline antibiotics including tigecycline. It has only previously been identified in environmental and non-human pathogenic bacteria. To investigate levels of multidrug resistance in Bo, Sierra Leone, a molecular epidemiological study was conducted using an antimicrobial resistance determinant microarray (ARDM), PCR and DNA sequencing. The study found that 21% of isolates from Mercy Hospital (Bo, Sierra Leone) were tet(X)-positive, all of which originated from urinary specimens. Use

Seventy-four villages in eastern Sierra Leone, West Africa, many having a recently developed rice swamp, were surveyed for the presence of schistosomiasis and onchocerciasis, and their vectors. Prevalence rates for Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni were low, although the infections were widespread. There is some evidence that S. mansoni is extending its range in Sierra Leone although this is problematical because of the apparent absence of Biomphalaria pfeifferi, the recognized snail vector, from areas where the disease now occurs. The characteristics of rice swamp environment now being c

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women globally, with rising prevalence in low- and middle-income countries, including Sierra Leone. Despite this growing burden, sex-disaggregated data on breast cancer prevalence and inequality measures remain limited in sub-Saharan Africa. This study examined the trends in breast cancer prevalence in Sierra Leone from 2000 to 2019, with a focus on sex-based disparities.
METHODS: Using age-standardized data from the World Health Organization equity datasets, breast cancer prevalence (per 100,000 population) in Sierra Leone was analyse

The Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak of 2013–2016 was large, leaving in its wake an estimated 17,000 survivors in West Africa. Uveitis is one of the most common ophthalmic manifestations of EVD, but long-term follow-up in the at-risk population is lacking. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study of 521 EVD survivors from Sierra Leone who underwent comprehensive ophthalmic examination a median of 1,289 days, or ≈3.5 years, after discharge from Ebola treatment units. The most common ophthalmic findings were cataracts (117 eyes, 11.2%), uveitis (86 eyes, 8.3%), dry eyes (81 eyes, 7.8

The 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola outbreak was the largest in history, resulting in approximately 11,000 deaths. Despite the outbreak's eventual end, national and international health sensitization and containment efforts were subject to criticism. This study investigates disease-related knowledge and beliefs, as well as trusted sources of health information among EVD-survivors and their family members, highlighting the importance of community-informed public health responses. Participants (n = 134) were adults who were either EVD-infected, affected families/caregivers, or community leaders. In-

We generated genome sequences from 218 cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in Sierra Leone (SLE) during 2014⁻2015 to complement available datasets, particularly by including cases from a period of low sequence coverage during peak transmission of Ebola virus (EBOV) in the highly-affected Western Area division of SLE. The combined dataset was utilized to produce phylogenetic and phylodynamic inferences, to study sink⁻source dynamics and virus dispersal from highly-populated transmission hotspots. We identified four districts in SLE where EBOV was introduced and transmission occurred without onwa

Lassa fever is a rodent-borne illness that is endemic to parts of sub-Saharan Africa, including Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Guinea. The disease is named after the town of Lassa, Nigeria where it was discovered in 1969. This data article focuses on the epidemiology of Lassa fever in Sierra Leone following a decade-long civil war that ended in 2002. The data were collected at Kenema Government Hospital (KGH) in Kenema, Sierra Leone, which maintains the country׳s only Lassa fever treatment facility and a biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory. The key data set variables include Lassa fever serostatu

PURPOSE: The 2014 outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa was the largest in history. Starting in September 2014, International Medical Corps (IMC) operated five Ebola treatment units (ETUs) in Sierra Leone and Liberia. This paper explores how future infectious disease outbreak facilities in resource-limited settings can be planned, organized, and managed by analyzing data collected on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and infection prevention control (IPC) protocols.
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: We conducted a retrospective cohort study by analyzing WASH/IPC activity data ro
