Schwannoma of the Colon.

Schwannomas are neoplasms originating from Schwann cells, which are the cells forming nerve sheaths. These neoplasms generally involve peripheral nerves. They rarely affect the gastrointestinal tract and primary colon involvement is extremely rare. The objective of the present paper was to present a case of primary schwannoma of the sigmoid colon, unassociated with von Recklinghausen disease, that was histopathologically confirmed by means of an immunohistochemical panel. The patient was a 71-year-old woman who had had rectal bleeding when evacuating, with pain and tenesmus, for 4 months. She

Fibromatosis of the Sigmoid Colon With CTNNB1 (β-Catenin) Gene Mutation, Arising at the Site of Ileocolic Anastomosis for Resection of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor.

We describe a case of intra-abdominal fibromatosis, which occurred in a 44-year-old woman who had a previous history of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of the sigmoid mesocolon, which was treated with imatinib and resection. A mass was detected at the site of ileocolic anastomosis of the previous small bowel resection and sigmoid colectomy, nearly 3 years later. Clinically, this was suspected to represent recurrent GIST and was excised, but histology and mutational analysis showed desmoid-type fibromatosis with a mutation in codon 41 of exon 3 of the CTNNB1 (β-catenin) gene. The occurren

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the colon associated with diverticulitis.

We report the second case of a malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the large bowel. The neoplasm constituted an incidental finding during the diagnostic work-up for diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon. There was a massive abdominal recurrence of the tumor four months after colectomy, and the patient died nine months after the initial operation. The literature on fibroblastic sarcomas of the colon is also reviewed.

[A case of granulomatous inflammation of the sigmoid colon caused by a fish bone that resembled cancer].

This case involved a 76-year-old man. Total colonoscopy was performed as a second examination for colorectal cancer because of positive fecal occult blood results, revealing a neoplasm with ulceration in the sigmoid colon. We suspected type-3 colorectal cancer and performed a biopsy, but the biopsy diagnosis showed only an ulcer with active inflammation. Colonoscopic re-examination in a highly advanced medical institution revealed granulomatous inflammation of the sigmoid colon caused by a fish bone, and the fish bone was removed endoscopically. Granulomatous inflammation of the colon caused b

[Subtotal colectomy in the treatment of neoplastic left colon obstruction].

INTRODUCTION: Subtotal colectomy and ileo-sigmoid or ileo-rectal anastomosis is a treatment wort of considering in patients affected by colonic neoplastic obstruction, as it shows low morbidity and mortality, and good results. CASE REPORT: A case of bowel obstruction due to a stenotizing neoplasm of sigmoid colon is reported. The obstruction causes severe dilation before the stricture), particularly accentuated in the cecum, which showed very reduced wall thickness and initial signs of ischaemia. Staplers (GIA 75 and EEA 31) were employed to perform a quick and aseptic (removal of a closed sp

CT findings in metastatic ovarian tumors from gastrointestinal tract neoplasms (Krukenberg tumors).

The computed tomographic (CT) findings are reviewed in 7 patients with metastatic ovarian tumors from gastrointestinal tract neoplasms (Krukenberg tumors). All patients presented mixed ovarian masses. In 6 cases the masses were mainly cystic, with internal septa and focal or uniform enlargement of the cyst wall. In the seventh patient the ovarian mass appeared on the CT as mainly solid. The size of the neoplasm varied between 5 and 46 cm. Ascites was only seen in 1 case and in another the existence of a primary tumor in the sigmoid colon was demonstrated. In our cases the CT signs of ovarian m

[A surgical case for concomitant coronary artery disease and ASO with advanced colon cancer].

We report a successful surgical case of concomitant severe coronary artery disease and ASO with advanced sigmoid colon cancer. This patient underwent two-stage operation. Resection of the sigmoid colon was carried out first, then CABG and aortofemoral bypass was carried out simultaneously. The surgical strategy of a patient with coronary artery disease and malignant neoplasm is still controvertial, however, it should be decided considering the severity and the symptoms of both disease. In this case, ascending aorta was used as a donor artery for aortofemoral bypass. This technique will bring t

Long-term survival after resection of metastases in the lungs and larynx originating from sigmoid colon cancer: report of a case.

Metastatic neoplasms in the larynx from remote primary tumors are uncommon, and laryngeal metastasis originating from the colorectum is extremely rare. We herein report a case of metastatic laryngeal carcinoma originating from sigmoid colon cancer in a 54-year-old female. Curative partial laryngectomy was performed, and the patient remains alive with a good quality of life and no signs of recurrence seven years and eight months after sigmoidectomy and four years and eight months after partial laryngectomy.

Basaloid Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Sigmoid Colon.

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) of the colon is rarely found proximal to the anal canal. We report a case of an 81-year-old woman who was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lung without metastasis and BSCC of the sigmoid with differing histologic findings suggesting that these tumors were separate primary neoplasms. SCC of the colon has a dismal prognosis. Surgery is the primary method of treatment when feasible, in addition to chemotherapeutic agents.

[An autopsy case of triple cancer associated with superior vena cava syndrome].

In recent years, because of advances in diagnostic techniques and therapy for malignant tumors, it is not rare to encounter cases of primary multiple malignant neoplasms. However, triple cancer is still rare. We report a case of triple cancer--gastric cancer, sigmoid colon cancer and malignant fibrous histiocytoma. To our regret, we could not make a diagnosis while the patient was alive. Careful examination of a cancer patient is important because malignant tumors may develop at any time.

Laparoscopic treatment of cystadenocarcinoma of the appendix penetrating in the sigmoid colon.

Adenocarcinoma of the vermiform appendix is a rare neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract that most commonly presents as right lower abdominal pain, mimicking acute appendicitis. Presentation caused by loco-regional spread with involvement of adjacent structures is rare. An accurate and complete preoperative diagnosis has been rare in the past; however, modern imaging techniques allow recognition of most complications and associated conditions. The diagnosis is confirmed postoperatively. Aggressive surgical management is the treatment of choice in appendicular adenocarcinoma. We report the cas

[Synchronous carcinoma of the colon and the rectum (21 cases)].

We present a retrospective study on 610 patients with colorectal cancer diagnosed over a 10 year period; 21 patients (3.4%) had synchronous multiple primary carcinomas. Age and clinical symptoms were similar to those with single carcinomas. In 57% of patients, the presence of synchronous neoplasms was diagnosed preoperatively by colonoscopy and/or barium enema, in 38% peroperatively and in 5% postoperatively. The more frequent localizations were rectum-sigmoid colon (24%) and descendent colon-sigmoid colon (19%). Three patients had 3 synchronous tumors, respectively. According to the Dukes cla

True smooth muscle neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract: morphological spectrum and classification in a series of 85 cases from a single institute.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: True smooth-muscle neoplasms of the GI tract have been only rarely studied in the KIT era. Their incidence among other GI mesenchymal tumours and their clinicopathological spectrum have not been sufficiently analysed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed all GI mesenchymal lesions at the Pathology Institute of the Nuremberg Clinic Centre from 1994 through 2005. RESULTS: Among 262 lesions, there were 142 GISTs (54%) and 85 true smooth muscle neoplasms (32%). Smooth muscle neoplasms comprised 72 polypoid leiomyomas (78%, 5 oesophageal and 67 colorectal), 10 intramural leiomyo

Genetic analysis for diagnosing local recurrence of sigmoid colon cancer mimicking a small intestinal tumor: a case report.

BACKGROUND: With recent advances in genetics research, genetic analysis is increasingly being used in clinical practice. We report a case in which genetic analysis aided in diagnosing a local recurrence of sigmoid colon cancer, initially suspected to be a primary neoplasm of the small intestine. CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old male underwent laparoscopic sigmoidectomy for stage IIIB sigmoid colon cancer, followed by 8 cycles of CAPOX adjuvant chemotherapy, one and a half years prior. A follow-up CT scan performed one and a half years postoperatively revealed a mass in the small intestine nea

Adult intussusception secondary to diverticular disease.

Intussusception is the invagination of a proximal segment of bowel into the lumen of an adjacent distal segment. It is a common condition in the paediatric age group although it rarely occurs in adults. Organic lesions in the bowel wall are the primary cause of adult intussusceptions with malignant neoplasms being the most common. However, we present a rare case of a 92-year-old man diagnosed with an intussusception of the sigmoid-rectal colon secondary to a diverticular stricture.

A Symptomatic Mucinous Cystic Neoplasm of the Mesentery: A Case Report.

Mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs) are rare tumors primarily observed in the pancreas but occasionally found in other locations such as the retroperitoneum, ovary, liver, and spleen. These neoplasms are histologically classified based on the degree of dysplasia, with some associated with invasive carcinoma. Colorectal surgeons infrequently encounter MCNs. Mesenteric MCNs pose a diagnostic challenge secondary to their atypical location, subtle histology, and lack of specific biochemical markers. In this context, we present a case involving a 68-year-old female who initially presented with an assu

Endometrial stromal sarcoma with focal smooth muscle differentiation: recurrence after 17 years: a follow-up report with discussion of the nomenclature.

In 1977, a case report was published describing a 28-year-old women with an endometrial stromal tumor that showed foci of myogenic differentiation. The term "stromomyoma" was introduced to encompass both this type of neoplasm as well as "uterine neoplasms resembling ovarian sex-cord tumors" (UTROSCTs). More than 17 years later, the tumor recurred, involving the right ovary, sigmoid colon, small bowel, abdominal wall and omentum. The histologic and electron microscopic similarities between the recurrent tumor and the primary neoplasm were confirmed. Applying the recent classification and diagno

A Rare Case of Triple Primary Malignant Neoplasms (RCC and Colon Cancer) Detected by 18F-FDG PET/CT.

Multiple primary malignancies are not uncommon in daily oncology practice, even though their frequency in the same or different organ systems varies. Regardless, early detection and proper planning of therapeutic approaches are essential for successful management. Here, we present a 73-years-old male with adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid who was referred for initial staging with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). 18F-FDG PET/CT revealed two metabolically active formations in the sigmoid and ascending colon and a large, heterogeneous tumor l

Increased risk of colorectal malignant neoplasm in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: a large study.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been suggested to be a strong risk factor of colorectal benign adenomas and advanced neoplasms. The aim of this large cohort study was to further investigate the prevalence of colorectal malignant neoplasm (CRMN) in patients with NAFLD and determine whether association between NAFLD and CRMN exists. 2,315 community subjects (1,370 males and 945 females) who underwent a routine colonoscopy according to international colorectal cancer screening guideline were recruited. Nature of colorectal lesions determined by biopsy and NAFLD was diagnosed by ultra
