Failure to identify the target does not prevent the attentional blink effect.

The attentional blink has been attributed to capacity limitations at a central level of processing. We tested whether failure to identify the target would eliminate the blink. Two agnostic patients were presented with streams of letters, which they were able to identify, and streams of pictures, which they were unable to identify. The dual-task involved identification of a target and detection of a probe. With letters the duration of the blink was equivalent to that of the control subjects. A prolonged blink was observed in both patients for pictures irrespective of whether the target was iden

The signal detection ability of patients with auditory hallucination: analysis using the continuous performance test.

Signal detection theory is appropriate for analyzing the problem of whether auditory hallucination arises from a sensory or judgmental disorder. In the present study the sensory discrimination ability and decision bias of psychiatric patients with auditory hallucination was investigated by using the visual continuous performance test. Based on signal detection theory the d' (d prime) and the lnbeta value (the natural logarithm of the beta value) were calculated. The d' is indicator of discriminating ability, whereas the lnbeta value is an indicator of decision bias. The psychiatric inpatients

Line drawings as a tool to probe edge sensitivity in natural scenes.

To interact with the world effectively, the human visual system must extract meaningful features from visual scenes. One key feature are edges, luminance or texture discontinuities in two-dimensional (2D) images that often correspond to object boundaries in three-dimensional scenes. Edge sensitivity has traditionally been studied with well-controlled stimuli and binary choice tasks, but it is unclear how well these insights transfer to real-world behavior. Recent studies have extended this approach using natural images but typically retained binary button presses. In this study, we extend the

Auditory false perception in schizophrenia: Development and validation of auditory signal detection task.

Auditory hallucinations constitute an important symptom component in 70-80% of schizophrenia patients. These hallucinations are proposed to occur due to an imbalance between perceptual expectation and external input, resulting in attachment of meaning to abstract noises; signal detection theory has been proposed to explain these phenomena. In this study, we describe the development of an auditory signal detection task using a carefully chosen set of English words that could be tested successfully in schizophrenia patients coming from varying linguistic, cultural and social backgrounds. Development of inhibitory control during childhood and its relations to early temperament and later social anxiety: unique insights provided by latent growth modeling and signal detection theory.

BACKGROUND: Children with the temperament of behavioral inhibition (BI) face increased risk for social anxiety. However, not all children with BI develop anxiety symptoms. Inhibitory control (IC) has been suggested as a moderator of the pathway between BI and social anxiety. This study uses longitudinal data to characterize development of IC and tests the hypothesis that IC moderates associations between early BI and later social anxiety symptoms. METHODS: Children completed a Go/Nogo task at ages 5, 7, and 10 years as part of a longitudinal study of BI (measured at 2-3 years) and social anxi

ResoMamba-LLM: multimodal physiological signal stress detection for wearable devices via Mamba and: LLM. reprogramming.

Objective. The accuracy of psychological stress detection hinges upon the precision with which models capture complex and variable physiological responses. Current research primarily employs deep learning techniques to model multimodal physiological responses, aiming to enhance detection performance by leveraging complementary features across modalities. However, existing deep learning approaches face challenges in modeling long-range dependencies and exhibit suboptimal robustness in cross-modal fusion.Approach.To address this, this paper proposes ResoMamba-LLM, a multimodal stress detection fr

Detection of Microbehavior Intervals for Predicting Mental Health: Clinically Relevant and Advanced Multimodal Temporal Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) face sustained psychological demands that place them at heightened risk for burnout and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, assessing psychological distress in this population remains challenging because of stigma, underreporting, and the limitations of self-report tools. Although nonverbal behaviors such as facial expressions and gaze hold diagnostic promise, most approaches overlook the fine-grained, temporal fluctuations in these signals. In this study, we focused on microbehavior intervals-brief, involuntary changes in multimodal nonverbal

A case of naturally occurring visual field loss in a chimpanzee with an arachnoid cyst.

Deficits in the occipital cortex have varying consequences among mammalian species. Such variations are indicative of evolutionary transitions in the striate cortical contribution to visually guided behavior. However, little is known about the role of the striate cortex in visually guided behavior in chimpanzees due to ethical concerns about invasive experiments and methodological limitations such as the inability to monitor gaze movements. We had the opportunity to study the behavioral consequences of a deficit in the occipital cortex in a chimpanzee with a naturally occurring arachnoid cyst

Elevated bilirubin and visual perception in pilots.

BACKGROUND: A fatal aircraft accident of a Bo-105 helicopter on May 20, 1996 led to the suspicion that the pilot's raised serum bilirubin level could have contributed to the accident. It was suspected that an increase of bilirubin beyond 20.52 micromol x L(-1) could disturb visual perception. METHODS: In 1998 and 1999, 101 pilots with functional hyperbilirubinemia, diagnosed as Gilbert's syndrome, were subjected to perceptual-psychological testing (signal detection test) during their periodic medical examinations at the German Air Force Institute of Aviation Medicine. The results of the psych

Noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation induces stochastic resonance in vestibular perceptual thresholds assessed efficiently using confidence reports.

In sensory perception, stochastic resonance (SR) refers to the application of noise to enhance information transfer, allowing for the sensing of lower-level stimuli. Previously, subjective-assessments identified SR in vestibular perceptual thresholds, assessed using a standard two alternative (i.e., binary), forced-choice task, when applying noisy Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation (nGVS). However, this required extensive testing of at least 100 binary trials to yield sufficiently precise thresholds at each of several nGVS amplitudes, leading to confounds of fatigue, sleepiness, learning, etc. st

Brain and face: communicating signals of health in the left and right sides of the face.

In human communication and mate selection the appearance of health sends signals regarding biological fitness. We compared the appearance of health in the sides of the face to previous results on left-right facial asymmetry in the appearance of beauty (1). The stimuli were created by aligning the left and right sides of the face each with its own mirror image. Here, participants viewed 38 pairs of left-left and right-right faces and judged which member of the pair looked healthier. No significant interaction emerged between decision (health vs attractiveness) and face side. Rather, in women's

Spatial neglect and the neural coding of attentional priority.

The concept of attentional priority plays an increasingly important role in theoretical interpretations of the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying attentional selection. A priority map is a feature-independent, spatiotopic representation of the environment that combines stimulus-driven information with goal-related signals. It emerges from the functional properties of parietal brain regions involved in spatial attention and saccade programming on the one hand, and reaching or grasping movements on the other hand. Here, we explore the value of this concept for the understanding of neuropsy

Monitoring risk: post marketing surveillance and signal detection.

The primary goal of postmarketing surveillance is to provide information for risk assessment of a drug. Drugs affecting the central nervous system form a unique group of products for surveillance because they are often misused, abused, and diverted. These medications include opioid analgesics, stimulants, sedative-hypnotics, muscle relaxants, anticonvulsants and other drug classes. Their adverse events are difficult to monitor because the perpetrator often attempts to conceal the misuse, abuse and diversion of the product. A postmarketing surveillance system for prescription drugs of abuse in

On the use of metacontrast to assess magnocellular function in dyslexic readers.

It has been proposed that dyslexia is the result of a deficit in the magnocellular system. Reduced metacontrast masking in dyslexic readers has been taken as support for this view. In metacontrast, a masking stimulus reduces the visibility of a spatially adjacent target stimulus when the target stimulus precedes the masking stimulus by about 30-100 msec. Recent evidence indicates that the latency difference between the magnocellular and parvocellular subcortical pathways is at most 20 msec and may be as small as only 5 msec, or even less. This makes it difficult to attribute the latency in met

Atrial Fibrillation Screening: Burden or Benefit for Patients and the Healthcare System.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia and raises ischemic stroke risk fivefold, even when asymptomatic. Early detection and timely initiation of oral anticoagulation can significantly reduce stroke incidence, motivating interest in population-level AF screening. This review synthesizes findings from large-scale trials and digital health studies, including wearable device-based detection, and highlights both benefits and limitations of screening. Benefits include earlier diagnosis of silent AF, timely treatment, and potential reductions in stroke burden. However, draw

[Software for polygraphs used in scientific research].

Polygraphs--devices for simultaneous detection of several physiological parameters--are currently used in medicine in psychology. Special polygraphs are also used in scientific research. The process of data acquisition and processing in such polygraphs is usually computer-controlled. The goal of this work was to describe software for detection of polygraph signals used in cardiorespiratory system research. The software supports the experiment script language, allows hyperventilation testing, and makes it possible for the examination subject to control the data detection process.
