Filter frequency selection for manual wheelchair biomechanics.

Wheelchair locomotion is an important form of mobility for many individuals with spinal cord injury. However, manual wheelchair propulsion can lead to upper-limb pain and can be very inefficient. This has led investigators to apply biomechanics to the study of wheelchair use. The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the frequency content of the motion of both hands during two speeds of wheelchair propulsion, (2) to obtain the filter frequencies necessary to remove noise from wheelchair motion data, and (3) to provide signal-to-noise ratio data for wheelchair kinematics. The participa

Development and Evaluation of a Speech-to-Noise Ratio Feedback System.

People with Parkinson's disease (PD) often present reduced vocal loudness, which may impact the intelligibility of their speech especially in noisy environments. To address this issue, we developed an assistive speech-to-noise ratio feedback (SNF) system that estimates the user's speech signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in real-time and activates an audible alarm if the SNR falls below a predefined threshold. The proposed SNF system is comprised of a pair of over-the-ear binaural microphones for audio data acquisition, and a mobile application (app) that implements the key algorithms for coherence-b

Speech enhancement method integrating squeeze and excitation channel attention mechanism and improved CGAN.

To avoid the additional computational cost and algorithmic latency introduced by short-time Fourier transformation and waveform reconstruction, we propose CGAN-SECA, which incorporates a squeeze-and-excitation channel attention mechanism to enhance noisy speech directly in the time domain. The generator employs a symmetric encoder-decoder backbone with skip connections to reconstruct waveform samples and reduce information loss during down-sampling and up-sampling. SECA adaptively recalibrates channel-wise feature responses, enabling the network to emphasize speech-relevant representations und

Enhancing Clinical Full-Field Electroretinograms by Reducing Powerline Noise Using Pre-Amplified Electrodes.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of pre-amplified electrodes in mitigating powerline noise interference in clinical full-field electroretinograms (ffERGs). Pre-amplified electrodes can reduce powerline noise by providing an alternate pathway for the dissipation of electromagnetically induced noise. Building upon our previous theoretical and animal research, this investigation sought to validate these findings in a clinical setting. METHODS: Twenty-nine normal-sighted subjects participated in the study. Standard ffERGs were obtained using both traditional passive electrodes a

A multi-stage ensemble framework for classifying pig vocalizations under noisy animal farm environments.

Pig vocalizations are important indicators of health and emotional state, offering significant potential for advancing precision livestock farming. Accurate recognition of these vocalization patterns requires robust noise filtering and effective feature extraction. However, existing studies often focus on isolated patterns such as coughs, limiting their practical applicability in real-world settings. This study introduces the Pig Vocalization Multi-stage Classification (PVMC) model, a comprehensive framework designed to detect and classify a wide range of pig vocalizations under diverse farm c

Tinnitus: An Abstract View Emphasizing Signal, Noise, and Their Discrimination.

Most research on the hearing process and its pathologies is biological in nature. However, engineers work on similar problems, in particular signal detection, efficient information processing and noise suppression. On a more abstract level, hearing can also be treated as a discrimination task, something which is well known to statistics. The goal of this note is to explore the implications of these more abstract ideas: It merges that the signal-to-noise ratio and the construction of a suitable discrimination function are crucial elements of the hearing process. Hopefully such a theoretical poi

Research on Denoising Methods for Laser Doppler Blood Flow Signals Based on Time-Domain Noise Perception and DWT.

Addressing the challenges of composite noise (speckle noise, thermal noise, and random pulse interference) and non-stationarity in laser Doppler flow (LDF) signal processing, as well as the technical limitation of traditional threshold methods in balancing noise suppression and signal fidelity, this study proposes an adaptive denoising algorithm integrating temporal noise perception and discrete wavelet transform (DWT). A composite noise model is first established to characterize the interference. The signal undergoes a five-level DWT decomposition, where a local energy detection mechanism dis

Enhancing neural signal quality: a spike-denoising model with BiLSTM and attention mechanism.

Neural signal spikes are recorded by microelectrode technology for specific applications. Nevertheless, spikes frequently encounter significant contamination from several noise sources, making efficient denoising quite challenging. Hence, this study presents a spike-denoising model with a bidirectional long short-term memory and attention mechanism combined with a shallow autoencoder to enhance the signal quality. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed method, various types of synthetic data, such as simulated white noise, correlated noise, colored noise and integrated noise, are used to

An examination of speech recognition in a modulated background and of forward masking in younger and older listeners.

PURPOSE: To compare speech intelligibility in the presence of a 10-Hz square-wave noise masker in younger and older listeners and to relate performance to recovery from forward masking. METHOD: The signal-to-noise ratio required to achieve 50% sentence identification in the presence of a 10-Hz square-wave noise masker was obtained for each of the 8 younger/older listener pairs. Listeners were matched according to their quiet thresholds for frequencies from 600 to 4800 Hz in octave steps. Forward masking was also measured in 2 younger/older threshold-matched groups for signal delays of 2-40 ms

Ultra-low-field MRI: a David versus Goliath challenge in modern imaging.

Ultra-low-field magnetic resonance imaging (ULF-MRI), operating below 0.2 Tesla, is gaining renewed interest as a re-emerging diagnostic modality in a field dominated by high- and ultra-high-field systems. Recent advances in magnet design, RF coils, pulse sequences, and AI-based reconstruction have significantly enhanced image quality, mitigating traditional limitations such as low signal- and contrast-to-noise ratio and reduced spatial resolution. ULF-MRI offers distinct advantages: reduced susceptibility artifacts, safer imaging in patients with metallic implants, low power consumption, and

Automatic modulation classification method using fixed K-means algorithm for feature clustering processing.

The role played by communication technology in daily life is gradually increasing. However, there are problems such as complex types of signals, huge amount of data and noise interference, and the recognition accuracy of existing modulation classification methods is low. Therefore, the study proposes a signal automatic modulation classification model based on fixed K-mean algorithm and denoising autoencoder. The model uses fixed K-mean algorithm for feature classification and optimizes median filtering algorithm using dynamic thresholding. The classifier is used to improve the recognition accu

Quantitative Evaluation for Magnetoelectric Sensor Systems in Biomagnetic Diagnostics.

Dedicated research is currently being conducted on novel thin film magnetoelectric (ME) sensor concepts for medical applications. These concepts enable a contactless magnetic signal acquisition in the presence of large interference fields such as the magnetic field of the Earth and are operational at room temperature. As more and more different ME sensor concepts are accessible to medical applications, the need for comparative quality metrics significantly arises. For a medical application, both the specification of the sensor itself and the specification of the readout scheme must be consider

An Updated Framework and Signal-to-Noise Analysis of Soil Mass Balance Approaches for Quantifying Enhanced Weathering on Managed Lands.

Enhanced weathering is a promising approach for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere at scale while improving agricultural yields. However, accurately quantifying carbon dioxide removal in the field is critical for this approach to scale, particularly given that nearly all the current deployment activity caters to the voluntary carbon market. Here, we present an updated framework and a signal-to-noise analysis for using soil-based mass balance approaches to quantify rock powder dissolution from field-scale data of soil composition. With additional assumptions, the quantification of rock

Comparison of Dry and Wet Electrodes for Detecting Gastrointestinal Activity Patterns from Body Surface Electrical Recordings.

Gastrointestinal motility patterns can be mapped via electrical signals measured non-invasively on the body surface. However, short-term (≈ 2-4 h) meal response studies as well as long-term monitoring (≥ 24 h) may be hindered by skin irritation inherent with traditional Ag/AgCl pre-gelled ("wet") electrodes. The aim of this work was to investigate the practical utility of using dry electrodes for GI body-surface electrical measurements. To directly compare dry vs. wet electrodes, we simultaneously recorded electrical signals from both types arranged in a 9-electrode array during an ≈ 2.5 h col

High-speed dual-view photoacoustic imaging pen.

Today, photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is widely used to study diseases in the skin, brain, cardiovascular, and other parts. However, these studies are often carried out using physiological slices or model animals, which indicate that many PAI techniques can only be used in the laboratory. In order to promote the transformation of PAI into clinical applications or, more specifically, to extend the application of photoacoustic (PA) microscopy to areas such as the oral cavity, throat, cervix, and abdominal viscera which are difficult to detect with conventional PA microscopy systems, a PAI pen was d

Non-local means filter denoising for DEXA images.

Dual high and low energy images of Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) suffer from noises due to the use of weak amount of X-rays. Denoising these DEXA images could be a key process to enhance and improve a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) map which is derived from a pair of high and low energy images. This could further improve the accuracy of diagnosis of bone fractures, osteoporosis, and etc. In this paper, we present a denoising technique for dual high and low energy images of DEXA via non-local means filter (NLMF). The noise of dual DEXA images is modeled based on both source and detector n
