SILICOSIS IN WEST COUNTRY GRANITE WORKERS.

The granite industry in Cornwall and Devon is briefly described, especially the production of dust in dressing the stone. In 1951, 210 granite masons were examined (about 84% of the total at that time) and 37 (17·6%) showed silicosis. These men were followed up for 10 years. No silicosis was seen in men with less than 15 years' exposure, but after this time the risk increased to 11 out of 14 in those with over 35 years' exposure. Nine deaths occurred, two of which were due to silicosis. Radiological progression was observed in 13 of the 28 survivors. It was not necessarily associated with addi

[Silicosis with a rapid and pseudo-tumoral course occurring in a case of pre-existant progressive and treated pulmonary sarcoidosis in a miner little exposed to silicosis risk : sarcoido-silicosis (author's transl)].

The authors report the case of a miner suffering from pulmonary and nodal sarcoidosis treated with corticosteroids where during a multivisceral exacerbation with iritis and erythema nodosum there developed rapidly progressive pseudo-tumoral silicosis. Pulmonary and nodal biopsies by thoracotomy revealed silicotic masses in the upper lobe, penetrated and bordered by sarcoid granulomas. In the middle lobe and hilar nodes, only sarcoid process was present. This new entity, sarcoido-silicosis, follows its own course, insensitive to corticosteroids. By virtue of its immune status, sarcoidosis favou

Silicosis, then microscopic polyangiitis-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies-associated vasculitis may be work-related disease in patients with silicosis.

A 74-year-old man with silicosis was admitted to the hospital because of prolonged fever. After referral to internal medicine for persistent fever and renal dysfunction, workup revealed antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) positivity. He was diagnosed with microscopic polyangiitis (MPA). After treatment with immunosuppressive therapy, his condition improved. Herein, we discuss silica exposure and the risk of ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV), particularly in terms of work-related diseases. Silica exposure is a notorious risk factor for developing AAV, which is potentially lethal when no

Autoimmune findings in patients with silicosis in Spain.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure to silica is related to autoimmune diseases and features of autoimmunity, mainly autoantibodies. The study objectives were to estimate the prevalence of silicosis with associated autoimmune findings or diagnosed autoimmune diseases in Spain, and to assess the clinical and functional characteristics of affected patients. METHODS: This is a multicentre prospective study in patients diagnosed with silicosis. Autoantibodies analysed were antinuclear antibodies, isotypes IgA, IgM and IgG, rheumatoid factor, anticyclic citrullinated peptide, anti-Scl70, anti-Ro, an

Secondary Spontaneous Pneumothorax in Patients with Silicosis.

Background and aims: Patients with silicosis are at increased risk of pneumothorax. However, the true incidence of pneumothorax in these patients is yet unknown. Our objective was to study the proportion of secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) in patients with silicosis who present with acute respiratory deterioration. We also analyzed the risk factors, clinical course, actual management, and treatment outcomes of pneumothorax in patients with silicosis. Materials and methods: It was a hospital-based descriptive cross-sectional study. A total of hundred silicosis patients presenting with a

Silicosis in kaolin workers and firebrick makers.

Nine patients with disabling pneumoconiosis were selected over a three-year period for study because of a work history of kaolin exposure. All had worked in the Missouri firebrick industry. Chest roentgenograms from all nine and lung tissue from two were consistent with silicosis. Worksite analysis of airborne dust at several Missouri firebrick factories revealed that some current workers are exposed to both free silica (up to 4.5%) and cristobalite (up to 8.9%) at levels exceeding the threshold limit value (TLV). Analysis of airborne dust from several kaolin processing plants in South Carolin

[Pulmonary silicosis (not including asbestosis and berylliosis].

The pleuro-pulmonary pathology of asbestos, top most of silicates, is today well known. Other silicates, talcum powder, clays, micas essentially, are exploited and commercialized. Their pathology is less well known and often contradictory because of the heterogeneity of the inhaled minerals. All can contain large quantities of quartz and some varieties of talcum and a considerable proportion of asbestos fibres. These minerals can provoke severe pneumoconioses, silicoses and asbestoses respectively. Some relatively pure products do not contain these contaminants. In case of intense and prolonge

Artificial stone and silicosis: the Korean experience.

BACKGROUND: Engineered stone (ES), also termed artificial stone, is a quartz-rich composite slab (typically 85-95% crystalline silica) used for kitchen and bathroom surfaces, and has driven a global resurgence of accelerated silicosis. Korea presents a distinctive context in which individual workers accumulated multi-era exposure across cementitious terrazzo (Dokkidashi), natural stone, polymer solid surface and high-quartz ES. We combine a narrative review of the Korean ES industry, respirable crystalline silica (RCS) exposure and clinical phenotype with a single-center case series. METHODS:

Silicosis history: from antiquity to the anthropocene.

Silicosis is the oldest occupational lung disease known to medicine and, at the same time, one of the most contemporary public health emergencies. Described in classical antiquity, given monographic attention by Paracelsus and Agricola, established as the founding example of occupational medicine by Ramazzini in 1700, and named by Visconti in 1870, the disease was widely assumed by the late 20th century to be a controlled relic of heavy industry. Yet over the past two decades it has returned with force as an acute and accelerated disease of the young, through two technology-driven outbreaks: d

Evaluation of Sphingolipid Metabolism in Silicosis Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Silicosis is a fibrotic lung disease caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica. This study investigates sphingolipid metabolism in silicosis patients using plasma samples. METHODS: GC-MS-based untargeted metabolomics identified alterations in the sphingolipid pathway, while LC-MS targeted specific ceramide and sphingomyelin species. Enzyme activities of acid ceramidase, neutral sphingomyelinase, sphingosine kinase-1, and sphingosine-1-phosphate lyase-1 were also assessed. RESULTS: Results showed elevated sphingolipid levels and reduced enzyme activities in patients versus con

Silicosis with Bilateral Spontaneous Pneumothorax in Rajasthan.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Silicosis is an occupational lung disease caused by inhalation of crystalline silica. People working in occupations like sandblasting, surface drilling, tunnelling, silica flour milling, ceramic making are predisposed to develop silicosis. Unilateral spontaneous pneumothorax is a pleural complication that can develop in such cases. Our aim is to see the prevalence of bilateral pneumothorax in silicosis in Rajasthan and associated predisposing factors. METHODS: Fifty patients of silicosis prospectively reviewed by historical, clinical evaluation, and radiological evidence

Fatal silicosis in a funeral arts' craftsman.

BACKGROUND: The current scientific debate on silica and cancer has often led to overlooking the persisting risk of lung fibrosis from crystalline silica. CASE REPORT: During 2000, when 54 years old, a funeral arts' craftsman began to suffer from persistent, hacking cough; radiography and high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) showed thin sub-pleural nodulations of the lungs, mainly in the upper fields. Two years later, increasing dyspnoea appeared and HRCT revealed vast consolidative opacities in both upper fields. Bronchial biopsies documented lung fibrosis and silicosis was diagnosed. I
