Black flies are blood-sucking insects of public health importance, and they are effective vectors of pathogens and parasites, such as filarial nematodes of the genus Onchocerca. Our previous surveys have shown that individuals of Simulium turgaicum are annoying pests of humans and livestock in the Aras River Basin of Iran. In the present study, adult black flies of S. turgaicum were trapped from different ecotopes of five villages in Khoda-Afarin County, Iran. By using a sensitive nested PCR assay and targeting the nuclear 18S rDNA-ITS1 marker, filarial infections were found in 38 (1.89%) of 2

Simulium damnosum (Theobald) sensu lato (s.l.) is a complex of many species of black flies that transmit Onchocerca volvulus (Leuckart) to varying capacities based on their ecological zones in Africa. The presence of three ecological zones in Osun, an onchocerciasis endemic state in Nigeria, is the basis of this study that is aimed at determining the population dynamics of S. damnosum s.l. in the state. Adult S. damnosum s.l. were collected fortnightly in the wet and dry seasons for 2 yr between October 2014 and September 2016 in the Guinea savanna (Iwo), derived savannah (Ede), and rainforest

The histology of alimentary canal of Simulium (Wilhelmia) xingyiense mature larva (with gill spots) was investigated by using paraffin serial section. The alimentary canal is composed of foregut, midgut and hindgut. The foregut includes pharynx, esophagus and proventriculus. The up-inside of buccal cavity invaginates to form the labral gland with irregular shape. Ossified cibarium exist in anterior pharynx. Canular proventriculus forms by the invagination of esophagus. The midgut begins with four big gastric caeca, and divides into three regions according to the epithelium cell shape. The hind

Although approximately 40% of all the people blinded by Onchocerca volvulus are Nigerians, almost nothing was known about the various cytospecies of the blackfly vectors present in Nigeria until 1981. The activation of the Nigerian National Onchocerciasis Control Programme in 1986 (and that programme's initiation of mass distributions of ivermectin in 1991) provided a significant stimulus to understand the biology of the Nigerian vectors but the exploration of any possible differences between the cytospecies has been hampered by a lack of accessible taxonomic information. This review attempts

Chemical control against larvae of Simulium ochraceum, the principal vector of onchocerciasis, was carried out from 1979 to 1984 in a 91.3 km2 area of Guatemala where onchocerciasis is endemic. The control operation was divided chronologically into three phases according to the different tactics employed. Phase 1 (1979-1981), using briquettes of fat and detergent containing 10% temephos, was effective only in perennial streams. Phase 2 (1981-1982), which limited the application target to small streams with discharges of 0.1-1 litre/sec, was not effective. Successful control was achieved by Pha

Two species of Simulium were used to examine the effect of experimental Onchocerca lienalis infections on their fecundity and oviposition rates. S. ornatum s.l. was chosen as a natural vector of bovine onchocerciasis in Britain, and S. lineatum was selected because of its suitability as an experimental model for oviposition studies. Infection was either by feeding with blood containing microfilariae, or by intrathoracic injection of the parasites. Using the blood feeding technique, reductions in the fecundity of S. lineatum were observed at rates of 21 to 76%, depending on the concentration of

Black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are significant pests and vectors transmitting pathogens to humans and other animals. However, knowledge of species diversity as well as their role as pests and vectors in Laos is limited, despite the country having abundant suitable lotic habitats, that is, running water. In this study, we collected wild adult black fly specimens from Laos. Both morphology and genetic data supported that they were Simulium khelangense Takaoka, Srisuka and Saeung, and therefore, a new distribution record for this species. Screening of the blood protozoa from 106 females detect

INTRODUCTION: Black flies (Simuliidae) are globally distributed blood-feeding arthropods and vectors of viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens to many animal species, including humans. We investigated the occurrence of selected vector-borne pathogens in black flies in South Moravia, Czech Republic, and evaluated their possible role in the circulation of vector-borne pathogens.
METHODS: A total of 11,600 black flies comprising four species of the genus Simulium, namely Simulium (Boophthora) erythrocephalum (De Geer, 1776), Simulium (Wilhelmia) lineatum (Meigen, 1804), Simulium (Wilhelmia) b

The northernmost focus for Onchocerca volvulus Leuckhart (Nematoda: Onchocercidae), the causative agent of human onchocerciasis, is found along the Nile near the town of Abu Hamed in Sudan. The vector for O. volvulus at this focus is a single monomorphic population of Simulium (Edwardsellum) damnosum Theobald. This black fly population is limited to a small area between the fourth and fifth cataracts of the Nile River that is isolated geographically from all other populations of S. damnosum sensu lato. Phylogenies produced from cytological analyses and sequence data derived from the NADH dehyd

Biting flies were collected from the umbilical areas of Onchocerca lienalis-infected cattle in New York (state) from June through September of 1980. Of the 766 flies collected, 705 were Simulium jenningsi. Microfilariae were detected in the midguts of 37 (50%) of 73 females dissected immediately after the flies had fed. The mean number of larvae per positive fly (fly with microfilariae) was 15.2. Third-stage larvae were recovered from 25 (21.9%) of 114 S jenningsi dissected 8 to 13 days after they had fed on the infected cattle; the mean number of 3rd-stage larvae per positive fly was 3.5. Blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are cosmopolitan nuisance pests of great economic importance as well as vectors of many pathogens. After reports of massive blackfly biting of captive nyala antelopes in the Vienna Zoo, Austria, this study aimed to identify the species causing multiple skin lesions on the antelope hosts. The Palearctic species Simulium equinum, belonging to the medically and veterinary important Wilhelmia subgenus, was identified as the most likely causative agent. Barcoding and maximum likelihood analysis supported morphological species identification and highlighted the compl

The polytene chromosomes of 130 larvae of the Neotropical Simulium metallicum complex from Brazil, Costa Rica, and Ecuador revealed five cytoforms, including three ('M', 'N', and 'O') that are new and two ('B' and 'J') that represent range extensions of up to 850km. The discovery of three new cytoforms brings the total number in the complex to 17. Cytoforms 'B', 'J', and 'N' are reproductively isolated from one another, and their species status is corroborated by morphological evidence. None of the three new cytoforms is known from current or historical onchocerciasis foci, although 'M' inhabi

To determine the influence of meterological factors on the diurnal biting cycle of Simulium yahense Vajime & Dunbar (a member of the Simulium damnosum Theoblad complex), we captured host-seeking females as they landed on the exposed lower legs of humans in the Harbel area of Liberia. Biting activity was greatest during the morning hours and was characterized by a unimodal harmonic curve. Although meteorological conditions had no decisive influence on the unimodal pattern of diurnal biting activity, hourly variation in the number of S. yahense captured at human bait was affected by meterologica

Collections and dissections of black flies from human subjects were carried out over a 13-month period at two onchocerciasis-endemic sites in Guatemala. Simulium ochraceum comprised 87% of all flies collected. Populations of this species peaked during the first part of the dry season in November, while populations of S. metallicum, S. callidum and S. downsi were highest during the rainy season from June-October. Diurnal patterns of host-seeking activity were most pronounced for S. ochraceum, with a sharp peak occurring between 0700 and 0900 hours each day. Parous ratio was lowest at this time

This study compares the use of a mark-recapture analysis and a time-series analysis to estimate the gonotrophic cycle length and survivorship of Simulium metallicum s.l. in southern Mexico. Daily collections were performed with human- and horse-baited traps at 3 sites in a coffee plantation. The mark-recapture and time series experiments on these collections conclusively yielded a gonotrophic cycle length estimate of 3 days. Horizontal estimates of daily survivorship ranged from 0.75 to 0.69 and these values were similar to that estimated vertically of 0.77. The survival to infective stage (9

Blackfly members of the Simulium damnosum complex are major vectors of the parasite that causes onchocerciasis in Africa and Yemen, with other vector species involved in a few localized areas of Africa and in the Neotropics. Although the life cycle of these blackflies is linked to fast-flowing rivers, they can travel long distances (up to at least 500 km), calling into question how transmission zones are defined. Knowledge of the short- and long-range dispersal of these vectors could inform where control interventions and monitoring are necessary if targets for onchocerciasis elimination are t

Black flies are nuisance pests as adults, yet they are best managed in the larval stage in flowing waters. As a result, more effort is put into understanding the distribution of the immature life stages than the blood-seeking females that form nuisance. The seemingly localized nature of Simulium jenningsi Malloch (Diptera: Simuliidae) pest problems in western Maryland offered a study system to investigate the spatial and environmental correlates to their severity. Collections of adult black flies were taken at 260 sites within a 2,000 km2 region centered on Washington County, Maryland, during

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are ecologically and medically important insects. Female adults of black flies are the solitary vectors of river blindness (onchocerciasis) and their larvae play a vital role in stream ecosystem. This study examined the distribution of black flies in the Oriental region and analyzed the phylogenetic relationship of the subgenus Gomphostilbia members based on two molecular loci.
METHODS: The distribution data of black fly species in different countries of Oriental region were obtained from world black flies geographic inventory. The tw
