Independence of Vocal Load From Vocal Pathology Across Singing Genres.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the extent to which vocal load is associated with previous diagnosis of a vocal pathology among four major genres of singers (primarily classical, primarily musical theatre (MT), classical and MT combined, and contemporary commercial music only). STUDY DESIGN: Cross sectional survey. METHODS/DESIGN: An anonymous online survey was sent out to about 1000 professional singers through convenience sampling to touring companies, opera companies, MT companies, agents, directors and musical directors. Social media and email were used to solicit participation in the study. W

Androgens modulate song effort and aggression in Neotropical singing mice.

Androgens are an important class of steroid hormones involved in modulating the expression and evolution of male secondary sex characters. Vocalizations used in the context of aggression and mate attraction are among the most elaborate and diverse androgen-dependent animal displays as reflected in a rich tradition of studies on bird song and anuran calls. Male Alston's singing mice (Scotinomys teguina) commonly emit trilled songs that appear to function in male-male aggression. In this study, we experimentally manipulated androgens in singing mice to assess their role in modulating aggression

Does Music Experience Impact the Vascular Endothelial Response to Singing?

Background: Vascular endothelial function is closely related to brain health, especially in individuals with cardiovascular risk factors. In a randomized, crossover clinical trial (NCT04121741), we have previously shown that 30 min of singing improves microvascular endothelial function in older adults with coronary artery disease. Here, we report on secondary and exploratory analyses, including (1) changes in cortisol and cytokine levels and their impact on vascular endothelial function, and (2) the impact of personal music experience on vascular function. Methods: Participants had three study

Music of infant-directed singing entrains infants' social visual behavior.

Infant-directed singing is a culturally universal musical phenomenon known to promote the bonding of infants and caregivers. Entrainment is a widely observed physical phenomenon by which diverse physical systems adjust rhythmic activity through interaction. Here we show that the simple act of infant-directed singing entrains infant social visual behavior on subsecond timescales, increasing infants' looking to the eyes of a singing caregiver: as early as 2 months of age, and doubling in strength by 6 months, infants synchronize their eye-looking to the rhythm of infant-directed singing. Rhythmi

Singing Style, Vocal Habits, and General Health of Professional Singers.

Introduction  For the singer, the voice is a medium used to express feelings that capture the listener. Every singing style has specific demands, and a vocal alteration may prevent the singer from meeting them. Objective  To compare the singing style, the vocal habits, and the general health data of professional singers. Methods  Cross-sectional, quantitative and retrospective study of a survey database. Data on the singing style, the vocal habits, and the health conditions and history of 57 professional singers, 31 female singers and 26 male singers, aged from 19 to 57 years old (average of 3

Changes in Vocal Fold Morphology During Singing Over Two Octaves.

OBJECTIVE: Vocal folds are widely assumed to only elongate to raise vocal pitch. However, the mechanisms seem to be more complex and involve both elongation and tensioning of the vocal folds in series. The aim of the present study was to show that changes in vocal fold morphology depend on vocal fold elongation and tensioning during singing. STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective study. METHODS: Forty-nine professional female singers (25 sopranos, 24 altos) were recruited and three-dimensional laryngeal images analyzed in a coronal view derived from high-resolution computed tomography scans ob

Vocal Tract Morphology in Inhaling Singing: An MRI-Based Study.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Inhaling singing is a recently developed singing technique explored by the soprano singer Françoise Vanhecke. It is based on an inspiratory airflow instead of an expiratory airflow. This article describes the anatomical structural differences of the vocal tract between inhaling and exhaling singing. We hypothesize that the vocal tract alters significantly in inhaling singing, especially concerning the configuration of the anatomical structures in the oral cavity and the subglottal region. STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective study. METHODS: A professional singer (F.V.)

Task-specific singing dystonia: vocal instability that technique cannot fix.

OBJECTIVES: Singer's dystonia is a rare variation of focal laryngeal dystonia presenting only during specific tasks in the singing voice. It is underdiagnosed since it is commonly attributed to technique problems including increased muscle tension, register transition, or wobble. Singer's dystonia differs from technique-related issues in that it is task- and/or pitch-specific, reproducible and occurs independently from the previously mentioned technical issues. This case series compares and contrasts profiles of four patients with singer's dystonia to increase our knowledge of this disorder. Mapping the vocal circuitry of Alston's singing mouse with pseudorabies virus.

Vocalizations are often elaborate, rhythmically structured behaviors. Vocal motor patterns require close coordination of neural circuits governing the muscles of the larynx, jaw, and respiratory system. In the elaborate vocalization of Alston's singing mouse (Scotinomys teguina) each note of its rapid, frequency-modulated trill is accompanied by equally rapid modulation of breath and gape. To elucidate the neural circuitry underlying this behavior, we introduced the polysynaptic retrograde neuronal tracer pseudorabies virus (PRV) into the cricothyroid and digastricus muscles, which control fre

Laryngeal and Pharyngeal Movements During Inner Singing: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal and pharyngeal activity during inner singing is discussed in the context of vocal hygiene. Inner singing is defined as imagined singing, reading music silently, and listening to vocal music. When vocal rest is prescribed, doctors, speech therapists, and voice pedagogues recommend avoiding listening to music or reading music silently, since it is suggested that inner singing unconsciously influences the glottis, and thus moves the vocal folds involuntarily. The aim of this study was to compare the degree to which involuntary laryngeal and/or pharyngeal activity occur dur

GSK-3β Inhibition Affects Singing Behavior and Neurogenesis in Adult Songbirds.

GSK-3 (glycogen synthase kinase-3) is a serine/threonine kinase which is a critical regulator in neuronal signaling, cognition, and behavior. We have previously shown that unlike other vertebrates that harbor both α and β GSK-3 genes, the α gene is missing in birds. Therefore, birds can be used as a new animal model to study the roles of GSK-3β in behavior and in regulating adult neurogenesis. In the present study, we inhibited GSK-3β in brains of adult male zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) and accordingly investigated how this inhibition affects behavior and cell proliferation. Our results

Preparing to sing: respiratory patterns underlying motor readiness for song.

Evidence for motor preparation and planning comes from neural activity preceding neural commands to activate the effectors; such preparatory activity is observed in pallial areas controlling learned motor behaviors. Vocal learning in songbirds is an example of a learned, sequential motor behavior that is a respiratory motor act and where there is evidence for neuromuscular planning. Respiration is the foundation of vocalization, elucidating the neural control of song motor planning requires studying respiratory antecedents of song initiation. Despite the importance of respiration in song produ

Vessels Sing Their ARIAs: The Role of Vascular Amyloid in the Age of Aducanumab.

We review the implications of the recently approved aducanumab amyloid-β immunotherapy for treating Alzheimer disease with comorbid cerebral amyloid angiopathy. In clinical trials, amyloid-β immunotherapy has been associated with a high rate of amyloid-related imaging abnormalities, potentially driven by coexisting cerebral amyloid angiopathy. Therefore, immunotherapy's efficacy in patients may be modified by coexisting cerebrovascular pathology. We discuss the contributions of cerebral amyloid angiopathy on the development of amyloid-related imaging abnormalities and propose strategies to ide
